In fairness, it can be really difficult to showcase/discern a high level of technical skill when you're playing the kind of minimalistic beats that end up tracking for pop songs. It's very.. 4/4, snare/bass/hi-hat or similar and repeats on that (which makes sense, since the drummer is never the focal point of pop songs). That's not to crap on any of them, but I guess it's like trying to work out how good someone is at swimming by watching them wade through a kiddie pool - the gig never demands enough of them to give them the opportunity to flex.

@santiagoenmoto77623 ай бұрын
Many talented musicians fly under the radar. Some just want to pay their bills, while others are simply trying to make a living from their music. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter if they truly enjoy what they're playing; they just keep going, because playing is what keeps them going.

"insurance" to play for large pop artists? did you mean endurance? or assurance?
@hugolafhugolaf3 ай бұрын
Pop/soft rock musicians are generally very accomplished musicians and as you nailed it, playing for large pop artists often means you're a hired gun, and one wrong note is the difference between being re-hired or being passed for the next world tour. Normal hard rock, punk or metal bands are kind of a family and are more forgiving. A small mistake? Hey, you're only human. But huge pop artists demand the best, and this is what they get. Look at Leland Sklar. Sure, his stuff may no be as technically intricate as some crazy-ass death bands out there, but the guy's a total pro, will chart out a song/come up with THE bass line that the song NEEDS and record it within one hour. Boom, done. This is why guys like him, Kenny Aronoff, etc... are the go-to guys in the industry. Not because they're technical monsters, but because they get the job done for 95% of what's on radio today.

I’ve been drumming for decades. I’ve heard 5 seconds of summer, it’s alright and catchy. I was definitely prematurely judging him. With difficult accents to do under pressure, he killed it. Great feel and natural fills, awesome swivel kick. Some parts weren’t studio perfect still but he absolutely deserves full respect from the whole drumming world. Great playing! This makes me wanna go listen to 5 seconds of summer.
@silsail3 ай бұрын
He has also released two solo albums, Superbloom and Blood on the Drums. The second especially has plenty of 70s, 80s and 90s inspiration. As for 5SOS, you might like their lives more than the studio versions. Their approach is having a more pop-feel in the studio, to make them more palatable to radios and such, and going more rock in the lives. "Teeth (live from the Vault)" is especially recommended

I think i a big part of the success of this bit is how positive it is to all involved. No one dunks on the person for no knowing the band they're hearing. No shade is thrown on the old part for any reason. The new part is often celebrated for its new interpretation. And with Dirk coming back and listening to the redo with such a smile and openness. The vibe is a really big part of why this collections of videos is doing so well.

on tour for his band (5SOS), there’s always a section of the show where the rest of the band leaves the stage and he has an epic drum solo. in their last tour, they had a whole game show theme going on and his solo was combined with like a play-off thing with the audience to see who was louder. there would be video game like levels on the screen showing “ashton vs you” and like he would play and his level would move then the audience had to scream and the “you” level would move and they’d do that like three times and well at my concert he won lol but the whole thing is cool bc it shows his drumming off and it also engages with the fans. 5SOS gets undermined bc they play pop but they’re genuinely incredible musicians and they usually go harder live. “Teeth”and “More” live go really hard especially ashton who plays more rock

Pop drummers are usually really skilled. Its also one of the parts of being a good drummer, to realize that in some cases showing your technical skills would ruin the song, so its more clever to keep it simple, like in most of the pop music. And its not nearly as easy as it sounds, I often find myself playing some pop song and getting bored, so overplaying like crazy after the second verse or something. I love this series not only because of great and inspiring personas or that "out of comfort zone" aspect, but I also love that it shows the abilities of drummers from different genres, it shows that being a drummer who plays less technical genre of music doesnt mean that you lack skill or something, it just means that you serve different kind of music and understand your job, while still being able to play something else very well if needed
@Chzydawg3 ай бұрын
Something about this comment reminds of me of that drummer from some Japanese kids tv show that went viral a couple years ago for going ham on a drum solo. Not everybody can play for a band like Tool, Dream Theatre, etc. some of them make money through different avenues and just because the music they play as a 9-5 is simple and basic, doesn't mean they don't moonlight as a hecking skilled monster during their down time.

I have really grown to enjoy 5SOS as their sound has matured over the years because you can tell that they actually are really talented, hard working musicians in their own right, and Ashton has always been such a tight, intuitive, powerful drummer. I expected something good, having seen him kill it in many live concert clips, but this blew me away. I loved this refreshing spin on the track and the way he was clearly having a fun time. The way his face lights up with joy when he comes up with something that feels made for the part he’s playing is delightful. Also, his memory is insane and he has next level drum IQ, goddamn. What a creative drummer. Ashton needs to be back!!
