By the way: I saw the 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' Tour of YES 1974 on Saturday, the 13th April 1974 in the Olympiahalle/München/Germany. This Concert wasn't from his world, no, it was from another Galaxy. You can trust me. The Drum Part of 'Ritual' was played of all members Anderson, Howe, Squire & White, except Rick Wakeman. When Yes played 'Ritual' live, Chris Squire always played the Kettle Timpani. And i promise you, he was played the instrument very well. Phantastic. R.I. P. Christopher Russell Edward Squire. For me, You've been the Soul of Yes! ✨
@dannylgriffin Жыл бұрын
Chris Squire was always fun to watch live. There are certain musicians who are just a joy to watch play live. Chris Squire was one. Gary O'Toole, the drummer from Steve Hackett's band, is another. And, of course, Phil Collins. I would be remiss if I didn't add Jean Luc Ponty to this list. One can't help but smile and have fun when watching any one of these musicians live.

Congratulations, L33! You made it through to the end. This is the album that separates the wheat from the chaff from among Yes fans. The ones that "get it" know what I'm talking about. The ones who don't, are of the "Roundabout" and "Owner of a Lonely Heart" ilk. Great reaction, my friend. 😎👍

@@L33Reacts That funk section in the middle is stupid cool, but it also fits in beautifully with the whole structure of the song (also, the same chord progression as in that "dawn interlude" around five or six minutes into Revealing Science, after "Skyline Teacher, Warland Seeker" etc)

The live version of SYMPHONIC LIVE YES might be the most enjoyable version I know of. Once again this is the kind of music that you have to listen to several times and start to learn sections to truly enjoy it, just like Gates Of Delirium. One of those gems that just gets better and better over time.
@louise_rose Жыл бұрын
Yes, I completely agree - beautiful version and it's so nice to see and hear how the band and the small symphony orchestra are working together and lifting each other without making the music lose pace or groove. That entire concert (filmed in Amsterdam in late 2001) is great and with outstanding musicianship! I have known about the Yesshows album almost since it came out but never got around to listening to it in full - at the time, in 1980, it looked like the record company just tossing out a final mixed live album to cash in on the folding band (like with Deep Purple's "Made in Europe" a few years earlier). I've heard some of the individual tracks on KZbin though and I agree the take of Ritual is great.

They are masterful at tension/release. Few could build a song with such huge ebbs and flows. Genesis. King Crimson. But this album, this piece in particular, are master class. My brother and I used to make this whole album our church of choice on Sunday mornings back in the mid 70's. Blessings.

Especially Ritual. In the liner notes, Jon calls attention to "The seven notes of freedom to learn and know the ritual of life. Life is a fight between sources of evil and pure love. Alan and Chris present and relay THE STRUGGLE out of which comes a positive source." Freedom? Freedom from what? The seven notes of freedom are the seven segments of drumming in the actual ritual before Steve comes back to close this masterpiece of masterpieces. Mark chapter 16 verse 9 clears it up.

As a youth and young man YES changed my life. This is the FINALE and written that way! Begins like a punch and charges through to it's destination throughout. FYI, The first slow guitar solo is a medley of previous themes from Sides 1-3 including a riff from Close to the Edge. This is CHRIS'S and ALAN'S moment to shine. The RITUAL CEREMONIAL drum section has everyone playing percussion together. You must someday LISTEN TO THE WORDS/LYRICS. They do make sense if you have ears to hear. Nous somme du Soleil "We are of the Sun" The metaphoric poetic story is incredible !!!! HEY BTW TURN DOWN YOUR MICROPHONE. We can hear you a bit to loud over the music & a bit to harsh! The next time find the time to listen to the entire album. Experience the connection between these songs based on 4 major Vedic Shastras representing the 4 stages of existence,. The lyrics of the song tell a story of our evolution & the quest for knowledge, joy, and connection, providing a positive and uplifting message about the power of dreams and hope. Underscored with the sea as a metaphor for LIFE, the journey is illustrated with imagery of nature, the seasons, and myth, creatures and gods. The song also speaks to the universality of human experience, exploring themes of love and loss, growth and understanding, as well as the power of friendship and connection. The music emphasizes the story with its complex structure and shifting dynamics, providing a soundtrack to the journey. The song ultimately encourages its listeners to hold onto hope and face the challenges of life with courage, optimism, and strength.

Regardless of what band members may say -- especially Rick! -- this double lp is BY FAR my fav YES album! Their followup, Relayer, is a distant second (sorry Rick!)... As for the inspiration for the concepts found in Tales, from wiki: "While in his hotel room in Tokyo during the Japanese tour in March 1973, Anderson found himself "caught up in a lengthy footnote" in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda which outlines four bodies of Hindu texts named shastras." Weirdly, Lee, I was in a Cali cult for a yr during this same time, which was led by a disciple of Yogananda. Thanx so much or these Yes Saturdays!

By the way: The Piano in the final Part in 'Ritual' was played by Alan White, because Mr. Rick Wakeman was busy on this Day with Black Sabbath in the Neigbourstudio to play a Sintheseiserpart for their 5th Studioalbum 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath'. He also was a good Friend of Ozzy Osbourne and during this Time (1973), both guys often drink a little to much, so goes the story. For me, 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' ist the absolute Summit in Progressive Rock of all Time and the Track 'Ritual' - Nous sommes dou soleil(The fight of Life - the Bass and Drum part) is the perfect finish of this epochal Album. In my opinion, the absolute proof of the presence of God. 'TFTO' is the music of God, and 'Yes' are his ambassadors. ☺ 🌳 🥀 ✨

Relayer in context of this album ending with Ritual makes sense in the progression of the band. Can you imagine Alan getting called to join them when Bill left right before the tour for CTTE and having three days to learn their songs. Then 5 or 6 months later going into the studio to record this album? On this tour Roger Dean design a drum kit with huge octopus like arms with timpanis at the ends of each. I was too young to see then but I visualize this being used for the ritual sequence. I believe it is in the Yessongs videos. A new version was made for the 35th anniversary tour which I was lucky enough to see at Red Rocks.

Nous sommes du soleil means "We are of the sun". Live the drum section near the end, every member of the band has a drum and it is so much better, imo, live than in the studio. You are getting close to a million views, congrats. I run a channel called phisharchives that I upload the previous nights Phish show and has over a million views and last night they played Ghost. This particular review is one of the best reviews from anyone I have ever seen and I have watched thousands of reviews. Keep up the good work L33!

Wow man thank you so much! Those are very kind words. I definitely try my best to say SOMETHING but after Yes I swear it's just so hard to bring your head out of your ass of being like "my God that was beautiful!" 😂😂 This track closed out the album swimmingly. It was wonderful. 😊

In this instance the "du" is more accurately translated as "from the".

congrats, now listen to it over and over again for a decade and it will get better 😁 we got Close to the Edge, Fragile, Yes Album, Relayer, TfTO, Tormato, Going For The One... what a ride I'm so glad you like them 😁 they're my go to positive music, as well as Jon Anderson solo stuff also ghost also, the album is about evolution and culture. evolving from fish to man in a sense. our ancestors danced from the oceans.

Your observation of it sounding underwater makes me wonder if the fictional animation band, Dethklok, of the Metalocalypse series, felt inspired by this album. In one mad episode they record a record underwater in a mobile air-tight studio.

I am not involved directly with the Patreon activities. I singled you out because you RRREEEALLY understand what YES is all about. It would be cool to chat. If that's cool.

In future listens, you will hear not only Steve Howe recap melodies and themes from earlier in this album (and from other Yes albums!).but also Alan White recap the rhythms of those melodic moments in his percussion solo, with and without his drum synthesizers triggering bizarre notes. Really heady stuff and always a fun ride. Ghost? Go st-art the roller coaster! P.S. chomping at the bit for One More Red Nightmare...

Can you do Long Distance Runaround from Fragile? It was an early favorite of mine. Not an epic but such a great showcase of the entire band circa 1971 ❤

Your reaction was interesting because their next release Relayer does feature The Gates of Delerium, a piece that expresses going to war, I think you have heard it. I wonder if 'Ritual' provided the inspiration for the shape of 'Gates'. It hadn't occured to me until you said it felt like going to battle, lol..
