God these guys are so DAMN entertaining... even though this was made a long time ago, you can still feel ALL the energy from this performance. Ian is just energy personified... and man can he play the flute. Who was the mysterious other flute player??

Come on!! Barry is miming the flute while Palmer and Evans are miming the backvocals… It always been that way and it’s fine, it’s a show! It’s easy to recognize Ian’s voice on back vocals on the backing track including the “barry” flute part!

Yeah, as other suggested you should listen the album versions first. Simply because Tull rearranged the songs very often in live shows. And a lot of time the arrangemets changes (sometimes radically) during the years. Take for example Locomotive Breath. The studio version has a piano introduction but the popular (at least here on KZbin) 1982 live version starts right on the riff. And as Loco Breath was almost always the closer of their concerts, they always had an instrumental piece following the song, and that instrumental changed a lot over the years. Sometimes is an instrumental version of another Tull song, sometimes is a rearranged traditional, sometimes a completely new composition. Live Tull are beautiful cause there hasn't been two similar tours (at least until the late 80s).
@fordp69

Yeah, I've seen a lot of that in the concerts over the years I've seen them 20+ times (I lost count somewhere around 20), think of the two versions of "Living in the Past" once "Living WITH the past" came out, they always did that version.

The other flute was played by the drummer, Barriemore Barlow (the clue is the hat, as he imitated Ian’s one-legged stance, lol). Martin Barre also plays flute, although not in this concert - in fact he apparently played flute before guitar, and before Ian did.

There is not one but two flutes playing there and Anderson is one of them. The second (or third if you like) one is off camera and I'm fairly sure it is Martin Barre. Barre actually played flute before he started playing the guitar and he still performs on it every now and then. If you search for "Martin Barre flute" (without the quotes) on KZbin, you'll find a few videos of him.

I also heard him mentioning that the bass player, John Glascock was out "feeling poorly." John had a tooth infection that moved into his heart, and sadly, he passed away. It was heartbreaking. To me, he was a vital element of Tull while he was there.

As great as the album Songs from the Wood is, I like the next album, Heavy Horses, a bit more. Definitely one of my three or four favorite bands to have seen live many times. Unfortunately, today there are two "versions" of Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson's Jethro Tull and the more satisfying Martin Barre version. If both were in town on the same night, I would see Martin's show. That takes nothing from my regard for the genius of Ian Anderson.

Been following Tull since the Stand Up album 1969. By the late 1970s many prog/rock bands went into hibernation and out of favour and punk/rock was ruling current music. So Ian Anderson decided to write, produce and play most of the music himself, on a solo project- Songs From The Wood 1977. His old band members got to hear the songs, which they liked and suggested touring the album- which became one of their most successful and rightfully so. Anderson- a singer in the original bluesy band, wanted to play an instrument that no one else was using and so became a self taught flute player. He continues to completely amaze other professional players with his totally unconventional style.
@nyrocks5580
@nyrocks5580 10 ай бұрын
Unless I'm totally misunderstanding you, where did you hear/read that Songs From The Wood was a solo project on which Ian Anderson played most of the instruments and then the "old band members" heard the songs and decided to tour? They were still very much a band in 1977. The big split happened a few years later, culminating in the A album, which was intended to be his first solo record.
