The Zombies, along with The Beatles,Rolling Stones and many, many more bands are why the term “British Invasion” was coined. During the early mid-60s the best music on the radio was coming from Britain. Such a rich musical landscape in those days.

As someone who was a teenager in the mid 60's I loved the Zombies & any other band who had a 'jazzy/progressive' edge, from then into the late 80's. "She's Not There" is such an awesome tune. Santana's cover does it justice.

Colin Blunstone was such an underrated vocalist back then. They came out in America in the first wave British invasion and I think the enourmous wave of talent that hit us in 1964 kind of pushed some bands to the back of our minds. They, and Colin singing had so many hooks and memorable songs that still hold up today. The days of the 3 minute pop song crammed so much music into 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. I think the Dave Clark Five even had a sub 2 minute hit. Amazing!
@jimgreen2080Ай бұрын
Paul passed away 20 years ago. Hugh and Chris have mainly only toured if the Zombies were doing special commemorations. For She's Not There, you saw Rod Argent's cousin (and bandmate in the group Argent) Jim Rodford on bass and Jim's son Steve on drums. Jim passed away in 2018. And as noted below, Rod has just had a stroke, so they cancelled their US tour, and Rod has decided to retire from touring.

The Zombies original guitarist, Paul Atkinson, passed away in 2004, after a career as an A&R man for CBS UK. The band for She's Not There, Had Rod and Colin, with Rod's cousins, Jim Rodford on Bass, and Jim's son Steve on drums. The Guitarist in the 2010's was Tom Toomey. Jim Rodford (died 2018) passed on joining the Zombies in 1964, and was then a member of the Swinging Bluejeans. He did join Rod when Rod formed Argent. Jim joined the Kinks in 1978, and joined the Zombies when they reformed in 2001.

The bass player in the live clip, the late Jim Rodford, was also a founding member of Argent (he was Rod Argent's cousin) as well as playing in many other bands, including The Kinks. His son Steve is on drums here also. Jim was a lovely, very humble guy - him and Steve often guested with a friend of mine's band, the Blue Bishops. I've gotten to see the Zombies about 4 times in their recent incarnation, each time on a humble casino main stage. I feel weirdly lucky that they're almost forgotten and I got see these icons (icons to me, anyway!) on a smaller stage rather than a huge hall or arena. Rod's keyboard solos mash up his influences in jazz, classical, and Motown in ways that are almost like a fingerprint, you KNOW it's him playing. Colin's delivery is much more full-throated these days (the breathy delivery of the 60's was sort of a gimmick of the time he wanted to get away from, but I always liked that style, affected or not). And they've been releasing new music too, not just relying on playing their vintage material.

I was just a kid when the "invasion" hit, but I had a teenaged sister, so we listened to a lot of the great mid-'60s stuff together: The Zombies were my favorite British band - even over the two big acts. I remember them playing on a variety show (the Kraft-sponsored one, perhaps) and getting quite angry, because the screaming girls were so loud they mostly drowned them out: it's likely they were just lip-syncing, but I was too young to grasp that.

In my opinion, the Zombies were the best of the second tier British Invasion bands, but had the bad luck of being signed to a label that didn't like rock and roll (they turned down the Beatles) and they only got albums at the start and end of their career. In between they released a lot of very good singles, all of which are out there if you go looking for them.
