I'm one of those YES fans who is forever insisting that reaction personalities listen to the studio version of their masterpieces, but for those who love the visuals, there are exceptions, like Tempus Fugit. It was recorded at a time when MTV was just picking up steam & bands were starting to create a video to promote them. YES created a vid for Tempus Fugit that is excellent in that what you hear IS the studio recording, but what you're seeing is the band playing it for the visuals. The one they came up with for Tempus Fugit was wonderful because it showed Chris Squire, Steve Howe & Alan White in their absolute prime as musicians playing the kind of music they wanted to play (that Jon & Rick were shying away from). Check it out! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKvbi61_nrRrars&ab_channel=yesofficial

@@keithosmond5730Yeah, but MTV launched by heavily promoting the Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star" which was recorded by Trevor Horn & Geoff Downes, who were both members of YES during the recording of Drama, so they (& all bands at that time, actually) were aware of the need to make videos of their performances to promote them even in the years just prior to MTV...

For my money, this was the last Great Yes album. I never had a problem with Horn and Downes, and in fact I think Downes' beautiful keyboard sounds were a vast improvement over what Wakeman had been providing for the previous two albums. And Drama had great songs top to bottom.

Not a big fan of 80s yes. 90125 has some great parts on it but it's not special like classic Yes. ABWH suffers from lack of that bass from Chris and Bruford and Wakemans awful "modern" sounds. Not a fan of the songwriting either. Something happened to Steve howes guitar palying after Drama, he would never sound that amazing again. I remember seeing an Asia album in a record shop and buying it and thinking it would be like Drama pt 2. How disappointed I was.

If you ever hear the demos from Yes' 1979 Paris sessions it makes sense that Steve, Chris and Alan were wanting to rock out while Jon was wanting to go in a more 'airy-fairy' direction (Steve's words). But "Tempus Fugit" was actually a minor hit back in the early 80s, and would crop up from time to time on FM rock radio stations that would get into deeper cuts. And yeah, everyone's playing at their peak on this one. Chris is hands down an absolute stud all over this album. Plus, this is maybe the last time Steve was overtly psychedelic with his guitar sounds (he uses a Strat on this one because he needed the whammy bar and wanted that shinier tone.) And the Rush comparison is apt. Between Yes, Rush, Saga, and even Genesis this kind of tighter prog was making the rounds in the early 80's. It's interesting to think that Chris influenced Geddy who then influenced Chris! 😆

I life changing bass riff from a life changing band! Such tight playing from the band on Drama. I think that they felt they had something to prove after the ill fated Tormato album. There is a book out about the making of the Tormato album that is full of interesting revelations and an insight as to how it ended up the way it did. Chris, Alan, and Steve were keen to rectify a few things with Drama and even though it might not have went down well at the time with a significant amount of the fan base, it was a very important album overall for Yes and merits a re-evaluation all those years later. Rick Wakeman, a critic of Drama later conceded the importance of the album and its legacy for the continuation of Yes into the 80's and beyond. After the Drama tour, Yes officially split. Just a few years later they would return with a new line up and Trevor Horn producing thanks to some of the seeds sown on this album.

Lee !! If I could make a suggestion ? Stick to the things that are making you grow, in terms of subscribers. I've latched onto other reaction hosts, only to watch them veer off from this kind of material, once whole catalogs from bands like Yes are covered. This is them in their prime. Stick to that as much as you can- versus something like Fly From Here ? Dig deeper into them in their prime. Go into things like the extended version of 'A Venture'.... Or the box set 'The Word is Live" (live Yours Is No Disgrace or America !!) BBC sessions, TV appearances, ect. Just stick to this stuff, but dig deeper when material outwardly appears to "dry out". Just using YES as the example here. You do what you want, of course !! But this is my suggestion to you, my friend.... 🚬😎👍

Trevor Rabin (guitarist/singer) scored dozens of movies. He was with Yes later on in the 80s into the early 90s (Such as on "Endless Dream"). Trevor Horn is singing here and is a producer. It will be interesting to see what you think of what was called "Yes West," once Steve was out for a while and Trevor R takes his place.
@sigil5772

A way to view Drama is as a bridge towards the later more "standard" kind of rock they did with Trevor Rabin (or in Steve's case what he did with Asia). If you've honed your musicianship skills on ever more complex music, and you've offered up to fans something like Sound Chaser, where are you going to go, I mean, what happens if you take musicians who are _that good_ and then force them into a straighter, squarer sort of mode? What I like about Drama and Rabin era stuff is the _discipline_ that Chris and Alan bring, because you can imagine how lesser-skilled musicians might be able to handle the material, but they just wouldn't be able to achieve the same thing.
