We all have a certain type of music that resonates deep down at a visceral emotional level with us. For me it’s the music of the Strawbs. Not every song on every album in every one of their periods but when they hit for me they hit big.

I've loved Strawbs since my 20s. There are some fantastic remakes of "Down By The Sea" and "River" on an acoustic album of theirs called "Baroque & Roll." I played the album "Grave New World" TO DEATH! Loved it! Memorized every word!

On the "Witchwood" album, Wakeman does great syth work on "Shepherd's Song" and AMAZING harpsichord on "In Amongst The Roses." The closer "I'll Carry On Beside You" is a fabulous anthem of life. "The Hangman & The Papist" is one of the greatest story songs of all time. You'll freeze at the surprise ending. It's stunning.

Wakeman & Cousins reunited for a 2002 album called "Hummingbird." It's excellent.

Great band. They toured with several original members a few years ago, playing the whole of the “Hero and Heroine” album. Don’t miss out on Dave Cousins’ 1972 solo album, “Two Weeks Last Summer.” It is him singing lead on these three songs.

In 2011, they did a full in-studio remake of "Hero & Heroine." It's darned good for the most part, but, sadly, Dave Cousins' voice is a little shot on the title track.

By the way, Strawbs started out as the Strawberry Hill Boys in 1964, playing bluegrass music. I have not heard their early songs, my first time hearting them was on the Hero and Heroine album...it's fantastic.

You’ve come back to Strawbs, Brandon. 👏 It’s almost a year since you did ‘Autumn’. Glad to see you bringing this largely unknown band the attention they deserve. Hopefully, you’ll go back to,the Hero & Heroine album. Ghosts too.

My parents listened to Witchwood when I was very young and the song gave me nightmares. I still have a morbid fascination with it. It’s the most haunting song I’ve ever heard and brings me right back to being a scared 6 year old.

STRAWBS: an incredible prog rock band... underrated and overlooked, but not by me who has followed their career almost from the beginning. Dave Cousins, a master songwriter and a voice that contributed to the identity of the band. Of my most cherished compositions, besides "Autumn" (which is not very original of me), here are the others: - "Hero & Heroine" (album 'Hero & Heroine', 1974) - "Burning For me" (album 'Burning For You', 1977) - "Tears And Pavan" (album 'Bursting at The Seams', 1973) - "Ghosts" (album 'Ghosts', 1975) - "The Life Auction" (album 'Ghosts', 1975) Many thanks, Brandon, for your offer today; it satisfied, at the same time, a musical pleasure and a sweet nostalgia. [NB: "Down By The Sea", a cinematic musical composition!]

All great stuff! "Down By The Sea" has long been a favorite, in particular for the end orchestral section and the visual images it imparts, as to me it sounds like a stormy sea growing in intensity with rolling waves that at their peak do a "double crash" . . . . initially looming up and breaking on the shore, washing across the beach, and then smashing on the rocks! 🥰

Nice trio of songs from the Strawbs! I really didn’t pay too much attention to them in the day…I have to agree with Michael about too many artists and too little time! I enjoyed “Down By The Sea” best of the three and was definitely catching the Peter Gabriel vibes during my listen. On to Genesis tomorrow!! 😊

The influence of Hindi and oriental music on the eastern European folk music is very evident in Strawbs. The song Lemon Pie is a peach ✨️🎶✨️

@retroreactions.... geez bud, that took a lifetime to learn, hear, and put it together. But there is great amounts of information out there. I'm pretty sure Strawbs started as a folk band very early on.

I first heard of Wakeman when I heard him on Where is This dream of Your Youth? from the Strawbs live album Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios. Check that one out if you like Wakeman and Strawbs. He joined Yes a year or so later. Most fans favourite Strawbs album - from the prog perspective - is Hero and Heroine with the late John Hawken ex of Renaissance on keys. Those were the days! Very creative and - dare I say it - progressive.

Always very folky. Dave cousins with the archetypal folk voice. I really like The Strawbs although I haven't dug deep so thanks. The 'Autumn suite' and 'Life Auction' are good!

Actually, on the 'Bursting at the Seams' album "The River" is 4 and "Down by the Sea" is 5. No pun meant but one flows into the other. But you've struck gold now! I've been a BIG Strawbs fan for 54 years! Singers..... 95% Dave Cousins or Dave Lambert. Early albums, up to Grave New World singers included Tony Hooper and the late, great Sany Denny. I think for your next threesome, it has to be "Ghosts" from the same titled album, "Autumn" and "Hero & Heroine" both from the Hero & Heroine album.

An old lament: too many great artists and too little time to listen to/fully appreciate them. I've never heard anything from The Strawbs. I get an early Genesis vibes on the first song, early solo Peter Gabriel vibes on the second. Nice. The third song is more early Genesis vibes. That works

Hey Brandon, hope you are well. Witchwood is very folksy and not too shabby for something which is not in my alley. I'm afraid you're right about the dulcimer. DBTS starts well then it morphs to what you know by now I don't enjoy at all, they were gone too soon and I was born too late... Good over the top ending though, bordering on hysteria, very funny! The River is good apart from the voice at the end, I enjoyed it nevertheless. Thank you my dear!
