The Fairporters were prematurely old. Sandy had just turned 22 when they recorded the song. Richard was 20, Simon Nicol 18. Drummer Martin Lamble was 19 when he died in the van crash that happened between the recording of Unhalfbricking and its release. That version was chosen as BBC listeners favorite folk track of all time.

Here in the UK, she was our very own queen of folk rock. That photo was her with Led Zeppelin, who were friends with her. Those early Fairport albums which feature both her and Richard Thompson are all excellent. As a 73 year old, I ask "who kows where the time goes" more and more often. However, I'm so glad I'm not a young man at this time. You genuinely have it much tougher than we did.

I am 76. It was both the best of times and the worst of times during the 1960s, at least in the US: an explosion in great music -- with also a disproportionate amount of crap -- amid US involvement in Vietnam. How much time _HAD_ to be wasted confronting the latter and finally ending it, and the draft.

I saw Richard Thompson perform in San Diego a year and a half ago. He introduced this same song sharing it was written and sung originally by Sandy. He went on to describe her as his very favorite female vocalist and encouraged anyone in attendance who DIDN’T know of Sandy to look her up and listen to her. I was a fan of both of them going way back and I thought that was such a sweet thing to say about her❤

She was one of a kind and sorely missed. Any project she was part of is worth a listen. One of our favorite LP's by Fairport is Leige and Lief which is superb. There is footage of her playing solo and with her group Fotheringay up on YT so check them out! Peace and love brother and stay healthy.

It sounds to me like Sandy was playing by herself on this recording. The acoustic guitar is miked, but also fed to an amplifier with the tremolo effect turned up. So you have the acousic guitar, a tremolo guitar doubling it, and her voice. And her wonderful, innocent, real voice.

You mentioned Joni Mitchell. Another folk singer with a similar voice is Judy Collins. She was the subject of the CSN song “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” which I believe you have reacted to. Though she has a few original songs, Judy Collins is primarily a cover artist, but her voice and the feeling she brings to a song are really amazing. She recorded a lovely cover of this song. Her cover of Joni's Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” was a huge hit and helped launch Joni's career. Some of her other outstanding covers include the Eagles' “Desperado,” Steven Sondheim's “Send in the Clowns,” Steve Goodman's “City of New Orleans,” and several Bob Dylan songs. If you haven't already, Judy is definitely worth a look.

You listened to a solo live studio recording from 11 September 1973 for the BBC Radio 1 show “Sounds of the Seventies”, hosted by John Peel, which was broadcast on 25 September 1973. This solo recording was first released in 1997 on the CD "Sandy Denny: The BBC Sessions 1971-73," which was published on the Strange Fruit label. Only 3500 copies are believed to exist, as it was withdrawn from sale after it's first day of release due to copyright issues. This CD contains a selection of live concert tracks recorded at the Paris Theatre on 16 March 1972, as well as a variety of live studio tracks recorded for the BBC. It was compiled by John Penhallow of the Australian Friends of Folk. Most of the tracks are of excellent sound quality and this CD is highly valued by Sandy’s fans. In 2007, an expanded 3 CD + DVD box, "Sandy Denny: Live at the BBC", superseded the CD released in 1997.

I imagine she was playing the guitar herself on this version. A track like "Tam Lin" by Fairport Convention gives a good take of both Sandy and Richard Thompson's ability with a traditional tune. After leaving Fairport she formed the group Fotheringay and their only album (in her lifetime) features one of my favourite tracks by anyone in "The Banks of the Nile". There is unfortunately not much footage of Sandy performing, just some really rough amatuer videos, a Solo 1971 BBC 3 song set and a great 4 song German TV appearance with Fotheringay on a show named Beat Club which appears briefly on KZbin now and then before beiing taken down (it is available on another video service beginning with V). I'm not sure it would get you any more clicks but work by a raft of British folksters may be like nothing you've heard - Davy Graham, Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy, The Watersons, and Lal Waterson on her own.

This is one of the songs I want to be played at my funeral. Although as someone else said, I wouldn't choose this version, gorgeous though it is. This was an interesting version and showcases Sandy's great voice but the more satisfying version is with Fairport Convention on Unhalfbricking. You should definitely check out her work with Fairport. In 1969 they produced 3 albums no less - What We Did On Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking and Liege and Lief. All classics on my opinion. And Sandy's solo work - as a songwriter and interpreter of folk ballads is just as good too. Off the top of my head I'd suggest "I'm A Dreamer" (my all time favourite), "Solo", "Listen, Listen" "Bushes and Briars" "The Lady" and "Tomorrow Is A Long Time". Kudos to Patrick for recommending Sandy Denny - she should be far better known than she is these days. But beware, when or if you go down this rabbit hole, there is a certain melancholy to her music, perhaps retrospectively engendered by what we know about her untimely demise.

Confusingly, Fairport Convention record a track called "Fotheringay", and her later band was named after the song. It's a short, sad track based on historical events (probably need to Google "Mary Queen of Scots" for the background). Either way it's a haunting song, superbly sung by Sandy as always

Also well worth a listen is "Fotheringay", a band her husband Trever Lucas put together after Sandy had left "Fairport Convention", the word tasteful just doesn't do it justice. Sandy's repertoire, as well as her own self penned songs, also included songs from the English Folk tradition and I've included a link to "Banks of the Nile", an ancient British folk song of unknown origin which has been recorded by many artists over the years, widely percieved as an anti war song. Here we have Sandy's haunting vocals with impeccable backing from the band. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmKtiox3f5qSpZY

If you enjoyed the track above, I've got another link to "Fotheringay's" most successful song "The Sea", though this was penned by Sandy it does have the atmosphere engendered by a !00's year old folk song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3mzk3eVo854jKc Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this,, but despite the angelic voice, Sandy reportedly lived the "Rock and Roll lifestyle" to the max and this was what did for her at a tragically early age with a fatal fall alone at her home whilst under the influence. Sandy Denny was such a tragic figure. She was a chronic alcoholic and became very erratic toward the end of her life. So erratic that her husband, Trevor Lucas, fearing for their daughter’s safety, took their infant daughter to Australia without telling her. She died as the result of a head injury days after a fall.

Folk: check out "New Frontier" (released 11/26/1962) and "Time to Think" (released 12/30/1963) LPs by "The Kingston Trio. Their 15th and 18th LPs during the years Dylan and "The Beatles" released their first two. And note the JFK context -- beginning with "New Frontier," and release of "Time to Think" delayed because of the JFK assassination. Before those two LPs the Leftist folk music faction disparaged the "Trio" because "commercial" and not political. In the face of the 1950s blacklisting of folk music for advocating for social and political change (at the same time that right-wingers such as Robert Bork insisted that the First Amendment protects ONLY political speech), "The Kingston Trio" kept folk music within the mainstream and the public eye. They had many hits on local and "Billboard" charts.
