The singer with that crazy range, Ian Gillian sang the lead in London’s original Jesus Christ Superstar. I went with my parents. I was 11, and the understudy who was a monster as well, sang it that night. I was obsessed with the show, and then got into Deep Purple a little bit older. This song, and Burn were my 2 absolute favorites

Ian Gillan was the lead singer. After he left Deep Purple, he formed the Ian Gillan Band. I was working at a clothing shop at the mall in Beaumont, Texas in 1975. I approached a gentleman looking at apparel and was shocked to discover the customer was Ian Gillan who was in town to play at the civic center. Remember it as if it happened last week.

IAN PAICE is the drummer. IAN PAICE, don't forget that name again. Now listen to FLIGHT OF THE RAT from their 1970 album, DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK; it contains an amazing drum solo. This studio version of "Highway Star" is from their 1972 album, MACHINE HEAD. Here is also ROGER GLOVER on bass and IAN GILLAN on vocals. Along with Ritchie Blackmore on guitar and Jon Lord (R.I.P) on the organ, are known as the Mark 2. You can hear a symphonic piece called CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA from 1969, composed by Jon Lord and performed by DEEP PURPLE and THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, at the Royal Albert Hall, to feel the progressive side of Deep Purple. If you think is too long, you can listen to APRIL from their 1969 third album called simply DEEP PURPLE, (this is from the Mark 1 era, you know, Rod Evans on vocals and Nick Simper on bass, this two were in the band only the first year) at the beginning, they were taken as a pop-psychedelic-progressive band, until 1970 (with the Mark 2 line-up), when they make a musical statement, as they released the cornerstone of Hard Rock, called DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK, an album you must listen entirely. Good luck.

Loved your reaction Josh. I like how you listen closely and really notice everything. FYI, the first solo was organ. You had it right when you were moving your fingers around but then I think you said you thought it was guitar. No big deal. The second one was guitar. For me the most impressive Ian Paice song is called “Lay Down Stay Down”. It’s off of the Burn album- you reacted to the title track. Coverdale and Hughes singing. I think you would really dig that. It’s an upbeat number. The drumming astounds me on that song. Here are three other suggestions: from 1975, Blackmore had left to form Rainbow and they got a guy named Tommy Bolin for guitar. I like him as much as I like Blackmore. Tremendous guitarist. Two songs off that album,”You Keep on Moving” and “Gettin’ Tighter”. If you react to these 3 do the original studio versions. Another song you should definitely check out is from one of Tommy Bolin’s studio albums called “Post Toastee”. I name it as my favorite song of all time. How’s that for building up expectations? :-) It’s 9 minutes. And if you’re up for doing a long live deep purple song with an incredible drum solo - where you could see Ian Paice at work - check out from I think 1969, “Mandrake Root” from the Bilzen Jazz Festival. I promise you that none of these will disappoint you. Sorry for the long message, 😊.

@@mickeyhank some tastes do overlap for sure. I think Tommy Bolin deserves more attention. Brought both the James Gang and Deep Purple back from the brink while putting his own solo work on hold. Then overdosing at only 25 with the stigma overhanging the event that if proper actions were taken earlier in the night he might have lived... so sad... Not sure if you've checked out Dicon Dissectional (Daniel) or JustJP (Justin), I've sent them both Tommy's second album Private Eyes. They are worth checking out. I Still have not found Teaser on vinyl, but I am looking. I enjoy every song on private eyes. I look forward to the day this channel stumbles upon Tommy.... So much to enjoy!

@@daveking9393 Well said Dave! Sounds like you too have read the great book about Tommy called “Touched by Magic” by Greg Prato? If not you should definitely read it. It’s a collection of interviews the author put together of people who knew Tommy well. Amazing book and details that last night in Miami really well. Infuriating and as you say very mysterious/suspicious. I still remember buying Teaser when it came out on vinyl. I lent it a college roommate and never got it back but that’s OK. That whole Teaser album is worth reacting to as well. Pretty much everything Tommy did is of high quality. I love all the James Gang stuff as well. Josh here may also want to do “Stratus“ live, under the title “Tommy Bolin and Friends“. Thanks for those tips on other reaction channels who have checked out Tommy. I will definitely look into that. Good work spreading the word about Tommy’s music. 😀

It is difficult to follow the bass, some players just have the knack of hiding in the groove, you don't even know what they're doing. Walter Becker was the same in Steely Dan, Rutger Gunnarsson in the Abba band, Paul McCartney when he was in that band. Wow they're all elites. Yea well Roger Glover does that thing.

John Paul Jones was the same way. For instance, nobody talks about the bass line in When The Levee Breaks, yet it is such a monster groove, menacing and relentless. You can hear the water coming.
