John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 35 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a newsman so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first Elton John album as a teen. In the '80s Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show “The Cross Canada Report” which had two versions (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the popular Lovesongs at QM-FM in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.

The iteration of the band with Simon really kicked ass!. The 35th anniversary concert is right up there in great gigs. I did a drum clinic in '89 with Simon and he is a true gentleman and very across the full spectrum of audio technology. A total professional.

There is no better drummer for Toto than Simon Phillips. At first I didn't like the way he played in 1992 Kindom of Desire tour. It was totally different compared to Jeff Porcaro's style. But, a few years later I started to understand his playing and he really owned the Toto songs. After Luke's Candyman album I became a Simon Phillips super fan. This man still has an excellent balanced sound and technique. It's a real pleasure that we still can enjoy his solo work.

As a professional drummer, I played with Eddie Money for 2 years, Simon is one of THE greats behind the kit. There are many, he's a standout to be sure. John, you are a class act thru and thru. Jeff Porcaro was my all-time favorite drummer, but I love Simon too. Not only for his incredible playing, but for coming in after Jeff passed and helping to keep the band going. It is great that he played on one of Joe's songs and it would be awesome if they do something together again down the road.

I saw Toto with Phillips in 1999 in Nashville, as I said above. When Phillips played his drum solo, at one point during his solo he was playing a 4/4 beat with this right-hand and a 3/4 beat with his left-hand. It could have been the other way around, but watching and hearing him play was amazing.

Man, what an influence. I had first heard him on Jeff Beck's "There and Back" and Space Boogie was phenomenal and the fastest footwork I had ever heard that fast and that long. He is a pioneer and one of the greatest drummers in fusion of all time. My opinion of course but I know many share this same sentiment, especially those who have been around. Then I loved his drumming on Pete Townshend's music. Just a bad ass! Oh, and I can understand that it was a different band and it had run its course. Just not the same band or near the same band he had first joined. I'm buying all of this Protocol albums and they are highly recommended. Just more drumming to explore and learn from this drum genius.

You can’t blame Simon for pulling out when he did. It’s a relief to know they still get along and there’s no ill will. In a fashion, Steve Lukather both joined *and* formed Toto simultaneously. I recall reading around the time when the breakup happened that Luke didn’t want to be in a version of Toto that didn’t include David Paich or any of the Porcaro brothers. Can you blame *him?*

I agree about almost all your points even if Toto technically - I believe - was formed by David Paich and Jeff Porcaro but definitely Steve L. was an original member and it's probably up to him if there will be a Toto in the future. I think it was very important that Paich , Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams was part of the reunion and it's a bit sad that this didn't work Simon. But I don't blame him either. I think Toto XIV (without Simon) was there best album in years and maybe it will be their last (not counting 2018' Old is new from the box set, which I haven't heard). At the time of writing (August 2020) Wikipedia says that "Toto are an Ameican rock band" but I think it has been "Toto was..." not that long ago. On the other hand all members are listed as past members. So I guess Toto's future is pending.

Simon's playing in ToTo for More than 20 Years.....is an Entire Career. Also in Adition to his Incredible Drumming Skills, Simon's Production Contributions to ToTo were Extraordinary.

I saw Simon many times with Los Lobotomys before he took over the Toto seat. Live and up close at the Baked Potato and HOB on Sunset was absolutely phenomenal. A truly great musician

Same here with the exception of The Baked Potato... was also at a show at the Palomino that got closed down by the fire marshal (near the end at least iirc) 😅 Drove to Santa Barbara for a show on the Candyman album and it was shut down due to flooding. That sucked. Was my last chance to see them before moving to Denmark (was fortunate to see El Grupo and “Lukather” while living there). Was also very fortunate to see Lobotomy’s at TBP many times with Porcaro and other drummers back in the day ... an old friend had a system he showed me the first time I went with (to see Larry Carlton). We stood in line for the early show and got “reservations” for the midnight show so always skipped the line and sat somewhere in front of the stage. One of my fondest memories was a show where Bobby Kimball was in the audience and they did the most kick ass version of Heard it through the Grapevine I’ve ever heard (still have pics of Jeff hangin with Bobby on a break next to me in the bench seat against the wall. Sorry so long but man I miss those days! Moved back to the States in 18’ and was keeping an eye on TBP but I was a day late and the one or two shows with Luke were sold out instantly. Hope to get one more chance to see him there one day. Been enjoying some of the live/downloadable streams from TBP at least. Nothing like being there but it’s better than nothing.

Nice interview, and as a life-long musician myself, I've experienced the same. I saw Toto with Phillips in Nashville, Tennessee in December 1999. It included Lukather, Paich, Steve and Mike Porcaro, and Kimball on vocals. Guest star Hungate stood up and jammed on a few songs. It was a great show.

The one and only time I saw Toto was in 2007 on their Falling in Between tour. I am so thankful I saw them then, as this was the lineup I really liked best. Sadly, as noted, Mike Porcaro was absent but I got to enjoy the very talented Leland Sklar in relief. I very much miss Greg, Bobby, Tony and Simon. I'm sure there must have been some degree of infighting going on but you cannot find 6 people who will agree on every little thing. I just know that the FiB album was awesome, I listen to it even today, and I wish that lineup would re-form at some point. Knowing there is little chance of that, I'm at least very thankful that I got to witness them live once.

In late nineties Simon was totally amazing, same can be said about his performance in 2007... but in 2010 he wasn't as creative and brilliant as those earlier times, almost like "I just work here". We saw him with Toto back in 1999 and Simon was the only real choice to fill the vacancy left by the great Jeff Porcaro. He drove the songs with great energy and really added to the music, doing both Jeff's stuff and his own.

I wrote comment to another comment about my experience seeing Simon with Los Lobotomy’s, but my fist time seeing him with Toto was at the Jeff Porcaro tribute concert at the Universal Amphitheater. It was a very emotional concert for obvious reasons but I was inwardly also very excited to see Simon with the band. At the time I new him mostly from Jeff Beck (who didn’t, at least if you were a drummer) and the televised Tommy show (loved his drumming on that!). It’s a little fuzzy but pretty sure the lobotomy’s shows came after that tribute show since that came about so abruptly. The talent on that stage and the songs played throughout the night was a once in a life time experience. There’s a sound board copy floating around out there somewhere that’s not too bad. I probably found it about 10 years ago.

Hey John! Great interview! Thanks for that. Simon Phillips is also my fave drummer of all time. I just loved watching him create the most amazing percussion rhythms, and when he took over for Jeff Porcaro (God rest his beautiful soul), he did it with such poise and professionalism. It was actually the 35th Anniversary concert in Poland that reignited my piano playing and love for Toto, as I had not realized they were still active. It is by far my favourite live concert of all time! The set list was absolutely perfect. The music was tight, and Joe’s vocals…..well, what can I say? He’s just fricken awesome. My fave lead for Toto hands down. No disrespect to Bobby! He’s in a league of his own. I just personally prefer more controlled vocals vs scream and shout, lol. But that’s just my personal opinion and preference. Love Bobby to pieces. Sorry. I’m off track a little. Let me flip the switch to get this train back on track 😋. I mentioned this concert because it had amazing camera angles, and we got to see Simon play in his element. He’s just a joy to watch. He does it with what looks to be little effort. But you can tell he’s workin’ cause his soaked shirt says so. But he’s pure finesse, even during complex pieces, and he still looks around with a smile on his face to take it all in. True character and mastery of his profession. I was super sad to find out that Simon left after this tour, and it’s actually when I fell off as well. With Dave taking a back seat and directing, the loss of Mike Porcaro, and having lost Steve (who is my fave synth guy of all time), I lost that lovin’ feeling, ya know? So I totally understand what Simon is referring to! It’s just not the same. If Dave, Steve, and Simon came back, with Luke at the “shredder”, Joe on lead vocals, and Lee on base (now that Phil Collins has retired due to health, poor guy), I’d pay good money to fly wherever they were to see and hear them play! I know Luke is all about fresh sound and new music, and I totally dig that too. But if I were Luke (a man can dream right? Lol), I’d do whatever was necessary to make all that happen. For the fans, and for their music; new and old. Touring is tough. I totally get that too. And the older you get, the harder it is on you and family (if you still have one after all those years of touring 😢). But before Luke hangs up his guitars, and before Dave and Steve’s fingers seize up, as well as Simons’s hands, back, and shoulders, I’d sure love to see them all together for one more tour as the amazing 5! That’s a dream too! 😊. Thanks again John!

Seen Simon way back in 1983 or 84 at the Frankfurt Musik Messe. He played with drummer Gerry Brown and bassist Helmut Hattler. Simon absolutely killed it.

I saw Toto with Simon and Lukather in 2007 on the "Falling in between" tour. It was disappointing. Overall it wasn't a bad concert, but I know what kind of great concerts they were capable of doing. Simon is right. Without Paich, and Steve & Mike Porcaro they didn't have the same chemistry. Bobby Kimball's vocals that night were close to awful. You could tell he was trying to reach the old high notes and couldn't. I wish Joe Williams would have been singing that night. Plus Simon had to deal with so many different line-up changes over the course of 10 years that I totally get why he was frustrated and wanted to leave, By and large Toto (in my book) will always be one the greatest bands in music history. So much talent, so much musical diversity, so great to watch live. Looking forward to hearing Joe Williams solo record.

Enjoyed the interview but it was too short. Apart from some Cds he recorded with TOTO, i do have his "Protocol" solo CD and the live "Join Together" that the WHO recorded during their 1989 tour. I saw him play with Toto in Panama and with The Who, in Miami.

Love Simon, had one of his instructional videos way back in the day, and loved his work with Stanley Clarke; but Jeff Porcaro will always be my favorite Toto drummer.

The Toto 1978 I grew up with is the one I probably like the most and go back to all day. Montreux 1991 still with Jeff, is outstanding. Simon's work on the 2013 Poland tour is probably the best musician driven concert I've ever seen, with that line-up, and obviously 35 years of technology improvements. It must be very difficult to keep the band going despite the tragedies and circumstances, business decisions, and in reality, the current line-up bear little resemblence to the guys we all grew up with over the years.

I don’t know who’s the best drummer in the world and it doesn’t matter who the best musician is but I’d have to say Simon is my favorite drummer in the world and that’s what is the most valid thing to say about a musician

Likewise, Simon is definitely my favorite drummer in the world! I also like the production work he did (recording and mixing etc) on Through The Looking Glass and Falling In Between, as well as on several live DVDs of Toto's back then. Everything he touched on was top notch! He gave them that unique sound those years he was with the band which was definitely my favorite version of the band. He's the one and only, in my opinion.

I was a big fan of his drumming even before I listened to Toto. I had lots of albums he did play on. I got into Lukather's playing through his first solo album and then got the Kingdom Of Desire album when it came out and planned on watching them in concert. Sadly, Jeff Porcaro passed away then. But I liked that Simon Phillips joined the band. And I really liked the Tambu album, and Mindfields even better, that is my favorite album. I followed their work for a while after, but I felt there wasn't much that kept my interest. Still love their old stuff.
