Neil you are of course entitled to your opinion but clearly haven't heard or seen enough of Simon's open handed drumming over the last 40 plus years,I love Billy but Simon took what Billy did and cleaned it up/expanded the concepts until they were Simon's own. The mans independence/control is awesome ! It's fair to say he is one of the most original/creative/influential drummers thus far,at 63 if the man wants to repeat a few ideas then what's wrong with that ? As musicians we all do that,presented with as much material to drum on as he obviously does it's bound to happen.

At the very least you should learn how to type properly, the odd capital wouldn't go a miss !

He used to use a rack back in the nineties but ditched it because of resonance issues when the toms were being played ...
@aindparse4 жыл бұрын
Simon's drums are all mounted traditionally (tom holders etc) so that when one drum is hit, all the others resonate and add to the sound. Racks isolate the drums, so this doesn't happen. Plus racks look awful, like painter's scaffolds.
@Mike-ol7xp4 жыл бұрын
Yes and No, It depends on what response you're after. Racks don't have the wobble Simon mentioned that helps bring out the resonance of the toms
@mikehoward6954 жыл бұрын

@Stephen.Salamunovich2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree about the 14" bas drum depth. But you could eliminate the tom holder problem with a rack application. There's also a unique mount from INDe drums that mounts as part of the tuning lugs which you could put right at the very front of the bass drum so it would mount the toms immediately over the front lugs. That should buy you at least the extra inch you have to use and go with a 14" drum. Regarding the floor tom legs having to come out where the place locks can get dislodged, you could put the place locks ABOVE the fitting on the drum instead of below, and push the legs up so the top of the legs are flush with the top head. Then you push rotate the leg until the bottom is tucked up next to the drum and store and transport the drum with all the legs secured on it. Then when you go to set it up, you just bring the leg downward until the lock hits the top of the holder so it will be right back in place....My 2 cents anyway....
@IAmInfinitus2082 жыл бұрын
Simon doesn't go for a drum rack/power tower application anymore as he prefers the toms to have resonance with each other. I've heard that drum racks completely isolate the toms in its own place and thus not creating enough resonance to travel with each other. I guess his tastes changed, especially since he is after all also an engineer in the studio recordings as well. Also doesn't he use 15" depth instead for the kick to allow the mount to have space he wants for his configuration, I believe that's what Tama listed under his specs.
@HadEnough7452 жыл бұрын
Ask Simon why are so many drum companies pushing 18" deep bass drums?
@PaulMarangoni7 ай бұрын
He's wrong about having to have the tom mount further from the batter side. Those mounts would let him position the toms further away due to their ability to swivel around, even if the mount itself was installed closer.

About the fact that Simon could not use the bassdrum size he'd prefer (24x14 vs.24x15) due to the toms' mount on it, personally I don't understand how Tama could not build a specific toms' mount to allow a less deeper bass drum. I guess they would sell it worldwide to recover the investment easily. Or even Simon could build his own prefferred toms' mounts to allow it. Mystery..
@Superball012 жыл бұрын
Yeah I find that weird too, and I love Tama, don’t get me wrong. The one thing I find strange about them is that they really insist on having tom mounts on their bass drums, even in their really high end kits. I’ve only seen a few Tama kits with tom mounts that aren’t on the bass drum, it’s all very odd.
@robertoferrarini71532 жыл бұрын
@@Superball01 For the toms' mount on bass drum I have no problems, it might even be a specific Tama marketing strategy. What I don't understand is the impossibility to customized it for specific needs like Simon's. And, as said, honestly I don't understand why Simon heimself does not customize it, probably for endorsement contract reasons. The point is that he keeps saying it on all interviews! Ciao

@@robertoferrarini7153 Maybe it is intentional for Tama, but I’m a huge fan of having virgin bass drums for a really high end drum kit, but that’s just me.
