rushing fills - not counting /feeling time internally during a fill - or the sax player handing a cowbell and stick to a less than sober sorority chick and then trying to keep a steady tempo.

being dragged by the others specially the singers, when i was following the click. it splits my head. so instead of me leading them to the right beat/timing, i am literally skipping the click just to make the whole song sounds in tune with my drums----leaving the other instrumentalists, that are depending on my timing, confounded. messed up.

what I find challenging is when bandmates cannot stay consistent with the click...it is not always the drummer's fault...I am surprised how many musicians do not have that 'internal' metronome AND yet slowing down and speeding up when it is agreed upon can give so much feel to a song when played live.

It's indeed a fact that rushing or dragging is not only done by a drummer, but by a FULL band. So when a drummer is playing with a band when only the drummer has a click in his ear, the rushing or dragging from the rest of the band determines how much they really "follow" the drummer. The first person who has to follow the drummer as a dog that follows his owner is the bass. From the moment you have a rushing or a dragging bassist compared to the drums (aka no interlocking rhythm section) you're fckd anyway

I have found most musicians think they have perfect timing. They think the only people who don’t have timing is the drummer. I have played in this band for about 5 years. One member always said I was rushing as the drummer. I always felt like he was the one but I never said anything just tried to hold him back. About 2 years ago we started playing to tracks with a click. I started noticing every so often he would have to stop playing and let the music catch him lol. He has never talked about rushing since. We still play songs without the track and when he rushes he still doesn’t say anything to me. I figured out where it was coming from. I am not saying I have perfect timing. Everyone is like cruise control. A little faster a little slower a little faster a little slower and keeps pretty close to the same without people feeling much. But using speed when predetermined by the band can add intensity or if slowed can add a melodic personal feel.

I'm always glad to hear about the cymbal volume thing because for the longest time I felt like my playing lacked "gusto", so to speak, but I just couldn't bring myself to wail on them. It was more not wanting to break cymbals than anything else though lol

It's all about being able to play both ends of the spectrum when asked. I will say though, it's easier to ask someone to play louder rather than asking them to play softer

Nothing quite like messing up on a live performance to be a wakeup call for one to get better. I've had my fair share haha. Thanks for the experience, advice, and wisdom in drumming.

This is such an important lesson. I've been guilty of all of these at one time or another. Mastering and understanding all of these tempo, timing and dynamic issues makes us drummers that other musicians want to play with. 🥁❤️

Somewhat related, one thing I haven't seen anyone mention and that I wish I knew sooner was to try to breathe through my nose. As it's said to be better in general to breathe that way, I decided to try applying it when drumming. It caused me to keep my mouth closed and I discovered that I was actually allowing tension to build in my jaw, which both wasted energy and encouraged tension in general.

The drums 🥁 have always been my favorite instrument, since I was in grade and high-school! When MTV came out in the very early eighties, I was fascinated by the drummers in the bands playing! I learned in high-school, but was never taught correctly and read sheet music 🎼. I was always a "by ear!" Musician, not learning any music notes or anything! I just was a player to the radio 📻 type, or a garage drummer!! I was in high-school marching band, but was never good enough to play in a regular band! Watching this video, I've made a lot of these mistakes here, and I laugh 😃 at this, because I screwed up playing to any particular song on the radio, just trying to match the drummer in that song, learning the beat pattern, and learning the timing and the fills!! Really takes me back to happier times!!!

I had a gig where I was playing in a cage, but the rest of the band couldn't hear me in their monitors for some inexplicable reason and we couldn't solve the problem in time. With no click the only way they could hear me was from the PA, which was reflected by the wall at FOH, which was about half a beat of delay. So for things to work I had to keep playing with my internal clock while the band in my monitors sounded like they were dragging terribly. Let's say playing with authority was a challenge, but we did it in the end haha

Oh man, been there before. These gigs are SO challenging because you literally have to ignore what you're hearing. We played an arena a few months ago where the slapback was exactly one Eighth note long on a particular song and it shook the stage when it came back at us. It was crazy trying to sing and play over that...totally feel ya!

Agreed with whichfulthinking. I was able to distinguish what skills are most lacking in my play. The sad thing is even when Stephen was accentuating the specific skill, it sounded so much better than where I am; I've been playing longer than he's been alive.

OH MAn when you gave the example of the samba groove, where you dropped the beat. oh my god. I was at an open jam and I dropped 1 beat. I got into my head about some fill and abondened the fill 1 beat too early. The guitarist and bassist snapped their heads towards me and I knew I fucked up. I could not get back into the groove after that and i smashed the cymbals and walked off after a couple bars.... its axctually quite sad.. im stil recovering from that. i havent played infont of anyone since that. i havent trusted myself. it was so horrible. but a friend invited me to jam so hopefully ill get past it soon :D wish me luck

Gotta just jump back in! Go to the jam. You'll screw up again sometime. That's ok. It was a huge learning mistake for me and I've been grateful for it ever since (although at the time I wasn't lol)

A lot of times while playing local shows. You can’t always hear all the band. Blending your drum sound in with a lot of behind the amp sounds. You just have to commit to your playing. You can always watch a person in the room and tell if the music is working.

This will sound like a simple answer, but play the snare softer. Until it is on line with the other voices on your kit. A snare is naturally louder than a kick or tom

To add to rushing and dragging, if you play wih other musicians without any clicks, the other musicians/ singers will try and match you, resulting in the music speeding up or slowing down.

cymbals can never be TOO Loud! jk This is one of the best non-technical drumming videos I have ever seen. Thinking of showing it to the rest of the band. When our rehearsals are going "off the rails" a bit, I generally just say, "ok, let's start listening to each other." This video really explains the details of what that means. Rock on dood!

9:07: I can't hear where you dropped a beat, per se, but that drumming sequence would have been confusing even with all beats intact. I definitely would not be playing like that if I were a drummer.

With no musical context, it's hard to hear clearly. If the music were playing with me, you would have clearly heard a beat dropped and the drumming wouldn't sound so out of place.

@@StephenTaylorDrums I will explain to you why where you dropped a beat is so confusing: You say you mistakenly dropped a beat in that song --- but then you display that improvised number metronome in the top left corner (at 9:05) that counts a steady 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4... instead of counting only to 3 in that one measure where you dropped the beat so that your video audience can "see" you making the dropped beat mistake in auditory realtime.

Guilty of cymbals too loud and one volume, but also I play in a hardcore/metal band so it’s relatively common to play with a low dynamic range. Excuses excuses…

Coltrane, Miles...heck, most of the Blue Note roster from the early years smoked. You need to keep in mind that people didn't know smoking was bad for them for many years. So if you were born in the 50s, 60s, or 70s, you could have been hooked before you knew it was bad for you. Smoking was a VERY common thing between horn players and singers until recent times. You are correct, it's horrible for you. I'm just making thw point it was very common for quite some time.

Cymbals. Loud or not loud. It depends on the musical genre. My advice is: If you play (live) hard rock/heavy metal music in the style of Van Halen, Whitesnake, AC/DC, G'N'R, Metallica, Ozzy etc. Play cymbals LOUD. I received complaints from my band mates about my quieter cymbal playing and when I changed that, our sound got a lot more energy that those genres of music need.

From where the drummer sits is not a good position to judge if the cymbals are loud enough or not. The audience receives a totally different level. And the bass of the drums carries further than the high frequencies of cymbals

That's why listening to recordings, listening back to takes done in the studio, communicating with the front of house sound guy, and reviewing board tapes/recordings is crucial. I'm constantly doing this at gigs to balance my sound.

Great example...there are several outliers that are almost case studies. It worked for the situation they were in because the situation was built around them. Totally matched his eclectic personality and made him famous for sure!

Timidity is lack of courage or confidence. Confidence would be the one we're talking about here. Timidity is a synonym for timidness...although timidness tends to be more fear based...fear of making decisions, fear of the unknown or unfamiliar, even shyness. Timidity is what I meant.

😕The most important thing in a song is, the music, the vocals, and lyrics first!! There is always going to be do's and don'ts, on what the drummer can play! But it also depends on the genre too!
