I had a drumline instructor that explained this in a similar way. The drag, or “diddle” on any beat will always be exactly 2 notes per downstroke, or bounces - while the buzz roll will be 3 or more, requiring more downward pressure overall and letting physics do a lot of the work. The drag requires a little more control to really get the hang of, but I’ve found it to be the most useful of the two in my playing. Great explanation of this idea!
