I'm so glad that the Collins boys smoke on the drums like their dad. Genesis are the musicians that made the 70s. They define prog rock. Such fascinating, complex, beautiful, and powerful music. "I don't know you BUT I LOVE YOU!"

Concert toms never got the love they deserve, I think they sound absolutely incredible, and to my ears they sound better than two headed toms any day of the week. They cut through a mix, they have more power, more defined tone. Concert toms and roto toms, single head toms just rule IMHO. Love the Thomas Lange rototom kit video, if anyone hasn't seen it it's incredible, they sound so damn good. Genesis, Van Halen, Vinny Appice in Dio etc, single head toms defined so many incredible albums. I'm excited to see they are making a comeback. Great video as always guys, Nic is an incredible drummer, thoroughly enjoyed it!! 🤘❤️🤘

Also Carl Palmer played quite a cool concert tom kit with ASIA back in the day, a Premier with all metal shells. Inspired by the legendary titanium kit he'd once played with ELP, no doubt 🙂

I’m a Genesis fan since 1974 when I saw them at a small venue of about 2,000 people at a university sports arena in Montreal, Canada. They were still relatively unknown…it was the Selling England by the Pound album…they blew my mind and they’ve been a part of my life every since…saw them total of 4 times! Nic is keeping the legacy of Phil alive…awesome!

I got an slingerling kit in 1972. it's exactly as you described it the speed King pedal the slingerland hi-hat and the small unsecured seat three-legged stool. it was pretty common then. proper posture and ergonomics was not a thing back then. I didn't buy another kit until 1996. we just played what we had and what we were used to.

Brandon! great interview and insight. But you guys didnt cover one huge thing of Phil's. His sticks!! Why did he cut them down?, when did that start? What were the black rings at the end for? This had to effect his playing and attack i imagine? Speed? etc... Is there anyway to do a video on his sticks? What cracked me up is you all did this funny bit with those big pro marks yet did not talk about Phil's!! LOL.

Nic Collins did a fantastic job drumming behind Genesis, from the videos I've been able to see. Hearing stories from his perspective and his own insights on drumming is really cool. Hearing and watching Phil Collins play when I was growing up was the reason I took drums and concert band when I was in school as a kid. Phil Collins and Genesis were the music of a lot of my formative years. Thank you for this interview.
@Kiekhaefer62 жыл бұрын
The bass drum beater Nic was talking about with the "leather" on one side and fluff on the other was made by Premier. I had one on my 1970 Premier 250 pedal when I had a kit of the same year. The "leather" was fake black leather.

I have always loved 22 inch bass drums , however when I heard how punchy a 20 / 18 inch sounded I was stunned , I actually ended up buying a new kit with a 20 / 18 bass drum and when I record heavy stuff ( thrash / death metal) I prefer the sound of the 20 especially in the studio , people think a 24 will sound bigger and louder than a 22 and a 20 , that's not the case , it's all in the tuning .22 inch for live 20 for the studio.

I recall Phil saying that he dropped the 13" tom and that the largest rack tom was actually a 14" originally. He said that, because he wasn't playing the drums all night long, he decided to condense the kit somewhat. The concert toms provided a more cutting sound than Chester's double-headed kit and that he didn't have to worry about the engineer boosting him in the mix as the drums were so loud with the single heads.
