In a world of triggers this is refreshing. Power toms, no response bass drums heds and that doesn´t care! It sounds good. As a 34+ years drumming I love that. Simplicity and SOUND. That matters. Great job, guys.

Gotta say - our job as engineers is so much easier when we have a musician like Joey who knows how to play their instrument so well! For the sound he's going for he is striking the drums/cymbals perfectly. A lotta drummers don't know how bad they're making their kit sound by how they hit it. And no, softer isn't always better. But here it's wonderful. Great kit, tuned well, great mics, great player... it's hard to mess this up. Thanks for the video guys, loved it. -Blair

What a fantastic video. I will say though, thinner cymbals will almost always have have a lower pitch than their thicker counterparts, and be more washy with a longer, smoother decay. Thicker cymbals are bright and fast.

right at 49:45 Darrell is showing the snare "phase" between the top and bottom snare mic's. But he is also looking at the Kick's phase as well. Notice that the snares' transient attack start by going down. That is his phrase "The polarity is wrong" & "speaker is sucking, now the speaker is pushing" . He flips polarity on both the snare mics so they are now pushing up at the start of the hit.
@thingybob54
@thingybob54 Жыл бұрын
I noticed this part, and I’m kind of stuck on it! I believe that it’s more common for the snare transient to start going down, how it was originally. I’ve heard it explained that it makes sense because the pressure of the drum head is first travelling away from the mic, creating a negative waveform. I think it’s more important to match the snare polarity to the Overheads than it is to always start the waveform in the positive direction, but would love to hear some other opinions.

This is great! As a compete novice who has no idea what I am doing, I'm proud of the fact that I figured out on my own that the angle of the close mic on toms and snare that I arrived at agrees with Darrell's assessment. I'm micing a kit for the first time (well really the 2nd time, 1st time s over a decade and I knew even less, and had less and worse mics to work with), I put on isolating headphones and I just move the mic around with my hand to see where the attack and "bloom" ratio sounded best. Also in experimenting with a room mic, I discovered that the low LDC mic (U47 clone) set back about 6 feet or more from the kick drum and about 1 foot or less off the ground sounded killer. I agree it sounds like it's moving air. Cool stuff. I'm determined to make a decent sounding record in my basement with a few good mics and a 10 Ch interface and plugins. It's what I have to work with for now. I guess that's the challenge, but I am learning and having fun.

I think it’s interesting that it was never mentioned that this mix is technically audience perspective since Joey plays a lefty drum kit , but that to most of us this is perceived as ‘drummer’s perspective with the hats on the left and the toms descending to the right 🧐🧐🧐🧐
@LautenAudio
@LautenAudio Жыл бұрын
This is straight off the board, so it's not a mix. But it's an interesting conundrum because Joey is a lefty, but the person listening might not know it 😅

On the preferring the whole kit sound. I've noticed that engineers like yourself often the che's special is the choice of snare & hats. Combined with the choice of overhead setup, room + room mics. Often the boss-level mics are dedicated to those roles (C12, U47/U67, Coles, AEA). Kick, snare, tom seems to be a bit more common in approach. Usually it's one of a handful of variations of mics in similar positions. But the difference is, home recordists don't have access to a snare and cymbal library, a lovely sounding large room or those high-end room mics. A decent close mic sound is cheaper / easier to achieve in a so so room. Which then sort of led to a close mic'd becoming the common drum sound for DiY home recorded indie music of the past 20 years. Then if you need the large studio drum room sound, might be better to go to a great studio.

Great video, thank you so much for bringing this online! BTW Joey is an amazing musician who really "plays" his instrument and uses it as he wishes. One little thing though, in the video, the stereo overheads are flipped arround L and R. You can hear when Joey hits the symbal on his right hand side (drummers perspective), in the video you can hear it being panned R. As the rest of the kit is panned in the video from the FOH engineers perspective, maybe best to turn these around as well.

Multiple microphones near each source is necessary when drums are recorded in the same room as other instruments are playing at the same time. Otherwise, the Glynn Johns approach is perfect. Often technicians have completely changed my dynamics with too many microphones.
