I owned Remo drum kits during the late 1980's & early 1990's & they had a superb sound to them, but as in this video the reviewer said there were build quality issues.The hoops were pitted & corroded with rust from new, which should never happen.Also all of the chrome work was very poor and would soon pit.I had a Remo drum tuning key split/break after I had tuned the snare drum to a high tuning level. The Remo snare drum was not properly round so the drum head didn't sit properly, but the snare drum still sounded superb, such is that Acousticon is a great material for drums.There were stickers/lables on all of the later drums instead of proper metal badges. The hardware was as he said heavy & clumsy & the bass drum legs/feet were difficult to adjust as were the tom mounts. If you can live with all of the above issues, you will then own a truly great sounding & totally versatile drum kit for all styles of drumming. I would describe the sound of the Remo snare drum as a cross between staeel & wood, which is a unique combination. The earliset Remo drums had a brown interior and in my opinion sounded better & the later ones were painted black & still sounded outstanding.I a Remo catalogue from the 1980's the drums were described as having a vibrant sound, which is 100% true.

Man my first ever drumset was a remo masteredge my dad bought me when i was 12 years old, he died 2 month later from cancer. I play that kit every day scince then and until today i (apart from heads)have not changed a single thing about it. Love seeing other people with masteredges!

I have played Remo drums but not extensively; although I read reviews over the years where people were saying how great they sounded. The Acousticon material was basically sawdust and resin. There was likely an adhesive in there somewhere but I think the resin was more of what gave the shells their thing. The kit you have here is when the drums were starting to get better although the Encore series is not the best example of Remo drums. Your kit is punchy but I don't hear a lot of resonance. They improved on that later. The best drums they made were probably in the second half of the 90s. The Master Edge series and whatever came after was likely where the drums peaked. You're definitely correct about the hardware. It was disappointing. The late 90s into the early 2000s kits had better hardware but by that time they were almost done. Remo could not make a big enough presence in the drum set business. The other reason why the drums may not have caught on more with the public is because of the weight. The 90s drums in particular were heavy shells but then again that is why they sounded the way they did. Remo drums were also affordably priced. It's a shame more people did not get on board. Nowadays we need something like a Remo drum to come back due to environmental reasons. At the end of the day, they have to cut down trees to make your maple drums. We need trees to produce oxygen. Let them live. We can build products with synthetic materials. Remo drums were a good example of repurposing (the sawdust).

Recently got an Acousticon as my first drum set! Got it for $125 for a 13, 16, and a 22, with a Singerland Snare Drum! I'm gonna have so much fun with this thang~

Great video and tribute to Remo drums. I had the chance to play them when our HS jazz band borrowed a local university’s Encore kit for a competition and they were excellent, with very focused tone and easy tuning. Plus, Remo always made really cool lugs on the Encore and Mastertouch series.

I had a remo mastertouch with all of those issues. Sounded great, but stripping threads, lifting lugs, collapsing bearing edges on both the initial and replacement snare drums made me get shut of it.

@@DrumsBonedo Oh ja, erst recht mit den teilweise absurden Kesselgrößen. Meines mit 22x20, 14x14 und 16x16 geht schon fast für zwei Sets durch…

Is there an easy way to tell if you’re looking at a kit that doesn’t have the extra resin? So you can avoid one of the bad kits with the structural issues?

I have a bunch of Remo drum sets; maybe 10 complete kits in total. Most are Master touch but some are Master Edge and some are Gold Crown. The person I bought them from put pinstripe heads on all of them and the heads all were brand new so I didn't bother changing them yet I am not too crazy about the sound. Now that I wore out the heads on the one kit I set up I would like to finally try different heads. Why do you use Evans heads on Remo drums and how would you describe the heads you are using here. I have to think Remo makes a similar head. Would this be like clear Emperors?
