Gooood Morning!!! Greetings from the states! (one of the ones where reasonable people gather ;) I realize this is is from a wee bit ago, but Just finally snagged an Acrolite ( late 60's ) Previously had a 66 Jazz Festival Blue Sparkle snare that I sold to Tom Jones' drummer ( whacky world ). Been listening to the Timpano Percussion's "Evans Remo, Aquarian snare drum head comparison". ( An Amazing video ( they have one for bass drum heads also - and are really fun to watch., fyi) Anyhoo, I am about to strip this badboy down to the shell and refurb/lubricate everything. Thankfully the P85 has no issues, so ..Joy. Bow ties are all shiny and aside from the original heads and wires (!!) housing some spider webs in the shell, I am hopeful this will be a great little firecracker. ( Sounds great straight out of the box! ..Normally, as I am sure you now, some just choke everything and ship it. ...makes me want to hurl hammers. I will be trying a Remo Renaissance coated and a pinstripe coated ( two ply 7 (or 7.5mil) with slight tone control. ( I don't use anything but tuning to get the tone to ring properly. ( Or rather, Pleasantly.. Like drums should :) My kick is a 1929 Ludwig Pioneer 14 x 26 No holes anywhere. Smooth Ambassador on Reso, Smooth Emperor on Batter, tho may change to an Evans Calftone for some enhanced low end. For w.i.w, there is a Remo Ambassador Skyntone that is quite a special head.. Can easily tune it for a very motown sound should you want to experiment. Anyway, Thanks man! Cool video. Much appreciated. Cheers!! ^..^

Cool video. Just picked up a mint 90s blackrolite and was leaning towards Controlled Sound, which is what I have on my Hendrix snare. You video confirmed my choice...thx! 👊

I'm using an Emperor X on my 70'S Acrolite it's a drumhead I had laying around and I thought it would be a good starting point. I keep it tuned medium tight. Sounds great. But I have to hit it off center a bit for optimum sound. There you go.

Acrolite is aluminum, not steel.

Ambassador coated. An Evans vented sounded good on my acrolite, but didn’t last. I went back to ambassadors coated. No clear or clear colored head sounded good on it.

I used Remo heads for decades. The I tried Aquarian heads and I never went back. I'm not knocking Remo in anyway as I believe you can get great sounds out of Remo, Aquarian and Evans. Those are the three top drum head companies in my humble opinion..

I like the Emperor coated. I just got a 'Black Galaxy Sparkle' and it definitely needs new heads. Thanks. :^)

Hi there. I gotta a Blackolite its the way they call it down here in Brazil. What note do you think you can get better results on a lovely old Acrolite, G G# or A? Medium High I guess.

Great comparison! My favorite head on my Acrolite is Emperor, because it has perfect balance of attack and overtones for recording, especially for rock and heavier stuff CS Black Dot is also great, but has too much midrange in my opinion, but it's perfect when warmer tone with some overtone control is needed.

justaddsomeecho Agreed. Have a 69 Acro and love Emperor coated the most. I prefer Ambassadors on wood snares.

I have been using evans genera (very similar powerstroke 3), without internal muffler, low tuning for my 1966 acrolite and I think this combination exactly fits the character of the snare.

The Acrolite on this vid looks to have the earlier, smooth anodized finish vs the later powder coated ones (mid 80s and up). My guess is that the shell on this earlier Acro resonates more than the powder coated ones and the Black Galaxy Acrolite. I bet the sound of the Emperor on this drum will be fairly close to an Ambassador on the later versions at least as far as shell resonance goes. That Emperor has a wicked crack. Thanks for yet another great video, Kwesi.
