While on tour with Mike Stern the great Dave Weckl took quite some time to sit down with me and do a very remarkable talk about music and melody, expression, character, nuances and tiny details you can and should pay attention to to be a better musician. I've learned very much during this special hour and I hope you guys will take something out of this too.
Thanks to Dave for this opportunity and for providing me the live mix

Does he have a drumming student named Marty? You can sort of picture his student walking up to his house, hearing the drumming inside, then all of the sudden the front door opens with a whoosh of steam and smoke and Weckl bounces out "Marty! This is the big one, the drum solo I've been working on for my whole life!"

Hands down, this is by far the best interview I've watched with Dave or any other drummer! Great to hear such an open conversation about this art that we all love so much. Dave is without any doubt a true master and such a great guy too. Very valuable words from a guy with such an extensive carreer. Very insightful and informative. The camera direction is also very revealing...those close ups. Congrats Drumtalk for the great job! Made my day! Cheers from Brazil!

First got into Dave's playing when I heard "Got a Match" by the Chick Corea Elektric Band when I was 17. Managed to go see them at the Royal Festival Hall in London when I was 19. Saw Dave with his own band at Ronnie Scott's in the early 2000s. Then had the honour of attending a one-day clinic - just 12 of us, and Dave - in 2015 and finally met the man himself! What a journey. What a player.

A very good interview. I do remember seeing Dave Weckl with Chic Corea the 'Electric Band (late '80s).' I thought his solo was wonderful I remember when the time came for the solo to end, I saw where Dave wanted to 'take more' and I saw Chic smile and then Dave 'took off' again. I will admit it was fun feeling the end of the drum solo and seeing the smiles of the other players when Dave 'took off' again. Glad to hear Dave's take on things.

My introduction to this great drummer, was by hearing Michel Camilo's Why not? on the radio back in 1987, while painting my first appartment. At that time i was 19 and thinking: Who is that incredible drummer that i'm listening to? I was totally amazed by the energy, chops and sound. And the following speak would tell the listener that it was Michel Camilo at the piano, but not who the drummer was. I immediately called the Danish Radio to ask them about the name of the record and numbers etc.The next day i bought the Why not? album and In Trio, which also includes som great Joel Rosenblatt drumming. On the cover was incorrectly printed; Rosenblaff. So me and my friends would go: Have you heard about Joel Rosenblaff? He is also amazing. But anyway, i'm now celebrating 30 years of listening to one of the most inspiring drummers of all time, among Vinnie, Chambers Gadd and all the other fantastic fusion drummers. And finally i would like to say thank you very much for this great and serious interview with one of the most, at least to me, inspiring drummers of all time. And to myself: Happy anniversary with 30 years of listening to Dave Weckl. Can we please have 30 more years? Why not?

I had the amazing opportunity to hang out and study with Dave for a couple days a little over year ago. It was one of the densest learning periods of my life; it's amazing how good Dave is at packing information into a brief workshop setting. Dave's drumming has been an inspiration for as long as I can remember, and he's continually been at the top of my rotation of studies, both his written material along with his playing. Even given all of that, this interview is impressively rich in both its depth and its breadth. I feel like I have peaked a little more fully into the mind of one of my absolute favorite musicians. Thank you so much for such a great interview.

Damn! This dude is chalk-full of knowledge. How do you as a newer drummer start to build that knowledge base he talks about here, in terms of the music theory, the feel, the listening to legends? I practice all the time but I still feel like I don't necessarily know how to practice, and I want to be as effective as possible. I have a bunch of method books I use and those feel like they're working, and I try to be as patient as humanly possible with it, but I have no idea what exactly I'm really supposed to expect in terms of how I develop.

Not feeling it's just Me thanks to you I can relax and not care about it. Met you at Catalina B & G a while ago and it's Such an HONOR!! The fact you stated you're still learning and trying to be in CONTROL and MASTER what you do is UNREAL but relatable. Never satisfied. Dave is an intricately-technical, conceptual-spontaneous player all wrapped in one. This is a rare quality. I have been playing for close to 50 years now, I studied Jazz, Rock, Latin to name a few and I must say that my fluidity is not close to Dave's ability to effortlessly phrase his emotions on the kit at will within the rules, and beyond the rules of musical engagement with the other musicians, while still sounding textbook. This man is a Drummers drummer. But what strikes me the most, is that Dave is still trying to improve his fluidity, I heard him saying this a couple of times. AMAZING talent!!

Dave is a musician PERIOD, if you listen to drummers who have been at it as long as Dave - they have transitioned from a 12-kit to a 3 piece! Plus his technique, skills, and passion are still very present in his playing. Dave is simply a visionary who discovered why he was put here on earth and put in the work to excel! He makes trad-grip look good! :-)

I've had the opportunity to see Dave play in several different group situations. He always plays appropriate to the band, but is still Dave Weckl. He was smiling quite a bit during Electric Band gig I saw in October of 2016, although I completely understand his lack of concern about the "need" to smile while drumming. I've personally caught much grief over the years for that exact thing, as if a smile would have validated the complainants' existence....oh, well...lol

I agree with what Dave Weckl says here about drumming, reading, listening, and his philosophy in general.

Seems like a down to earth guy. Some good points here. Play with the band. It's not all about the drums. All musicians need to learn this.

I've listened to DW since the early 80's, I must be getting old... when did he start looking like Albert Einstein? In any case, he's still one of the best. I like where he's taken his own drumming... a little looser than back in the 80's, as awesome as those performances are.
