09:22 - 12:40 THANK YOU. I can't even count the amount of times I've had my style of music shit on by jazz guys. And the thing that makes it hurt more, is, I actually really enjoy and admire jazz drumming! It's truly a difficult style to master, and I work on trying to learn jazz chops as well as incorporate some of them into my own music (primarily metal, and some prog), just as much as metal chops. I just naturally write in the style of metal, so I play in that genre. It wouldn't make sense for me to be throwing my loud-ass double kick chops all over a jazz band, and I know a jazz drummer wouldn't cut it for my loud-ass metal band, and all in all, neither of us would necessarily be happy in those settings. I've dabbled in light rock and some lighter genres of music, and I just don't feel the same satisfaction as I do after playing my heart out playing a metal set. It doesn't mean I don't respect it, though. There's no need for one style of player to shit on the other styles. Also, genre aside, MANGINI IS AMAZING.
@riverfilms45488 жыл бұрын
Yep. I love Prog Metal Bands and Stuff like Dream Theater and even sometimes I love simple music like Ed Sheeran or Woodkid. In Germany there are many Jazz workshops especially for drums and I took part and Everyone said that i have to be open to other music styles. Today after playing the drums for 10 years I'am able to play styles from Jazz, to Funk, Latin and Metal. But the people who said this to me, the people that said that my music is not enough to learn from can play just Jazz.... Did they open for some metal beats? I listen even to classic music like Bach. I love every Style of music if it comes from the heart. The only thing I hate is when music becomes commercial shit that is written without soul.

Being honest, high level swing really takes a tremendous amount of skill and anything those drummers can do, they can pretty much do in the metal scene. The skills a solid jazz drummer can pull off is just levels above. However, mikes message is true about respect, and i will also reiterate, a lot of people call them selves jazz drummers because they can play a bit of swing or have laid down a few tracks, they are not true jazz musicians in my opinion, and the same for most people who play multi styles. Not often do you get someone who can play high level in different genres, even guys like Vinnie C could not play good swing music to save their lives, so i think sometimes certain purists blow shit out of proportion.

Mike is criticized too much for the wrong reason (by sour DT fans who still hang on to MP). As humble and dedicated as he is MM is one of the most amazing talented drum masters around!! Just a few, like Minneman, Lang, Peart can even with him.
@neaituppi73066 жыл бұрын
I am not a fan of dream theater to be biased by anything related to them. But the more I hear Mike Mancini talk, the more I relate to him. I saw one interview where portnoy said the music was becoming stale at times. And Petrucci looked at him like, what the fuck? Mancinii knows that the music is what you make it.
@taunokekkonen57335 жыл бұрын
Peart is a street musician in comparison. But that's beside the point. It's a shame how badly Mangini is newsted'ed. Poor mixing and editing and soulless tone is result of someone else. That Annihilator speed snare doesn't work with DT.
@IncapableLP5 жыл бұрын
I actually have a reasoning, why i do not particularely like Mangini in DT. He is technical, talented and INSANELY fast, but sterile. Not always and to be fair and honest, the new album finally shows, what he can do here imho, but compared to what he is capable of and what he actually did so far, there has been more "meh", than "This is great!" for me and this "Meh!"-feeling is so much amplified by the knowledge, what Mangini is capable of, but doesn't do. And here is where the definition of "Drum Master" comes into play for me. A "Drum Master", or legendary drummer, isn't defined by his talent, or skill. There are a lot of drummers out there, i would consider legendary, where a lot of people would be like "This guy? Everyone can play that! Mangini is far more skilled, than him!". 1.) If everyone can play it, then why does it sound garbage in 90% of the cases? 2.) Everyone may be able to play it...but only a handful of drummers are able to COME UP WITH IT and THAT is what defines a legend! You can be skilled and talented as hell. You can play fast as lightening, or do some insane timing-tricks...all that doesn't matter, if it still sounds boring! And for the record: I don't just think, that Mangini sounded sterile, i also think, that the other members of DT lost some creativity.
@Angela_8005 жыл бұрын

Mangini is a phenomenal teacher and inspirational speaker, not just one of the great drummers! It says a lot about Portnoy that it was such an event to replace him (not dissimilar to the scenario if Buddy Rich had left his orchestra lol!). It says even more about Mangini's strength and character to be able to step into his shoes with grace and sophistication! It's taken me some time, and have seen both live with DT, but I now really dig Mangini as Portnoy's replacement. He's so good you forget he's there, because he has seamlessly joined the band, but definitely has his own sound and charisma! God bless the two Mike's-both equals.
@LordBaktor6 жыл бұрын
When people say "this style of music doesn't have feeling" it usually means it doesn't have the feelings they are used to. Metal is about transforming violence into music to different degrees. Most people are not used to music expressing violent feelings (aggression, speed, loudness, etc.) so they get their panties in a twist while most metal fans I know find the expression of those feelings through music cathartic.

I agree so much about what he said about prejudice in music. I would get so disgusted, even with musicians I like and admired, that would show prejudice about certain kinds of music, and, or certain kinds of playing. In the early nineties, a lot of players I liked, like Santana or Bill Bruford on speed metal players, saying how they are playing a thousand notes a second without feeling. You don't know if it has feeling for them. They didn't put all the work into playing like that, without feeling, it is just another kind of felling you cannot relate to. Even though I resisted people telling me to play in ways they thought were cool at the time, I never developed prejudice about any kind of playing. If I didn't like it, I didn't have to listen to it, but I am not going to tell them what to play. People feel things different.

Mike point about digging into detail on explaining things when teaching, is so under-rated. He is fundamentally right about it. I do find his reasoning on his fast single strokes interesting, when you compare what he's talking about in technique to what Marco Minneman talks about , it's two totally different ways of handling the same problem.
