Many Americans and Canadians seem to be very ignorant of their own history, and their western-centric views on topics like history and culture probably lend a lot to the gross representations of history and culture in AC Shadows. They can't imagine living in a culture where people are proud of it and know their history, because all they know is white guilt. Many of those suffering from such guilt are, of course, the most ignorant of their own history.

In Japan, histrical TV dramas themes are popular as games, and it seems that the number of women who like history has increased due to the influence of Atsuhime(篤姫), Oooku(大奥), Sengoku Basara, or AOI Tokugawa(葵徳川)etc. women who are especially knowledgeable about history are called Rekijo(歴女).
@crypto66Ай бұрын
@@ともこともこ-k3r I wish it was like this in my country. Instead all we have are soap operas with whole episodes where the plot is characters screaming over a kid. If not that, then horribly choreographed action serials with too much close-ups and fantasy epics that seem to follow the same formula. I remember when I visited Japan in 2016; I was perusing the hotel TV for something I could understand, when I got curious about this show that seemed to have a wartime setting. It was Beppinsan. That led me to finding out about asadoras, and I've always wondered how common it was to set stories in that period.

In Japan, there are old families that retain their traditions, and some families are just very religious, such as rice farmers in rural areas. Famous families have family crests and family trees, and samurai families have Japanese swords and armor in their storehouses that they donate to museums.There is also a large amount of material of historical value. When Yasuke was fabricated overseas, someone wrote in English that she was a woman with an old family lineage and that this kind of disrespect for Japanese history was unacceptable.

The biggest mistake Ubisoft did was to go with "this is authentic hidden history". If they had simply claimed that they are using a historical character that is shrouded in mystery due to the lack of records and we thought this might be true they would have gotten a lot of leeway. Even if something is proven to be false, it still falls under what the game company who are not experts thought might be true. But when you start making statements that something is factual history you will be judged the same as real experts. You brought it upon yourself by taking a mantle of a historian.
@KisekiFanАй бұрын

@@TonttuTorvinen honestly they should've gone with the Nioh 2 approach. Yasuke IS in that game, you fight him as a boss fight and is present during the Honoji Incident, as a samurai and part Oda Nobunaga's entourage, but that's about it. That's how it should've been, a pure fantasy game.
@DashBlueАй бұрын
absolutely true, they could've avoided most of this very easily thank you for watching!
@giboi03Ай бұрын
@@terminator572 This WAS how they used to approach historical figures-well documented or not-in the games. AC had many things unique about it, the revival and preservation of architecture and the illusion of life, living through historical events in more color and detail in roughly the same period, meeting figures of history whose personalities are still shrouded behind letters, journals, or mementos-Yasuke should have fit that category perfectly for the subtitle "Shadows". But no, they've forgotten what it means to have an AC protagonist, to have been a brief passing of a silhouette, a mere shadow in the history of time, in favor of completely bastardizing the already retconned plot and busted movements in the name of appealing to the total opposite of their demographic. It would be shameful to even call them the villain of their own game series, because Abstergo would never stoop this low.

About the VA controversy, as long as her activisim doesn't affect the game then I think it's fine. She's just acting in it, it's not like she's developing the game and there are plenty of actors with bad stances on both sides of the field that put their professionalisms as actors first before their political opinions. The same thing can't be said for AC Shadows though, that one is beyond reasoning...

I think the biggest difference between the Ghost games and Assassin's Creed Shadows is that Sucker Punch openly states that they are artistically modifying things, but they stay loyal to Japanese culture and vision. Meanwhile Ubisoft claims historical accuracy, but completely disregards Japanese culture. It is a really important distinction. Even though the Ghost games aren't as historically accurate as possible, they are still fun to play because the historical accuracy isn't everything, it is the FEELING of the game, and how they are still very respectful to the culture. On another note, I really enjoy watching your videos. I’m not going to target someone just because of their beliefs - if she does her job, good enough for me, if she doesn’t, THEN I’ll have a problem. If you don’t like the sound of her voice, well… that’s localization for you, oh well. She seems to be professional, regardless of her personal beliefs, that’s all I really ask. She’s voice acted in, among many other things: Code Vein, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Destiny 2, Fortnite, World of Warcraft Shadowlands, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, Cyberpunk 2077, Apex Legends, Deathloop, Halo Infinite, Call of Duty Modern Warfare III, Mortal Combat 1. Also yeah, Rook in Dragon Age Veilguard. That’s only SOME of her jobs. Like I said, professional. The hokkaido area might be an analogue for the wild west in the US, since it's a lawless land. And the BGM sounds like a fusion of cowboy themes and japanese themes.

Your videos are a great watch to get to know these little details that I wouldn't notice at all (disregarding my lack of knowledge of Japanese history and such). It reminds me of old anime subtitles that always has an explanation of jokes/history or meaning of words, always gives more enjoyment. A fun watch despite not being interested in the game.... (because I can't play it T_T)

The Half Torii Gate figure would be like if Activision, for BLOPS 6, released a figure of Woods jumping out of the World Trade Center as it was getting hit by a plane. Granted, American's would probably make dark jokes about it because we have a thing for joking about our tragedies, but there'd be massive outrage against it simply because they put a price tag on a tragic symbol of a country's history. Definitely gonna be one of many things leading to Ubisoft dying next year (hopefully).

13:24 plot twist: it was actually Ubisoft writing in the book. Sucker Punch just left the banana peel.
I am more concerned by the model they chose. Though it would never stop me from buying a game alone. But these days any time they pick a female lead it is to send a message. So I hope it bucks the trend.

From what I have heard, there is much more evidence of women warriors in Japan than in Europe. Women would often become savvy rulers in Europe, but never warriors

I mean, it's already been shown that they've just been trolling through google and stealing stock images. I guarantee you someone saw a picture of the One-Leg Torii and thought "Oh that looks neat" and no one ever stopped to ask "I've never seen a Torii gate that looks like that. I wonder why that is?" At a certain point, ignorance itself can be highly offensive, and for them to make this kind of 'mistake' even after all the criticism levied at them shows their ignorance is willful. They have shown they have no desire to ensure they don't keep making the same mistake, they just don't care about the disrespect they show. At this point, it's fair to say Ubisoft is unironically racist, especially since ignorance is the most common cause of racism. It's why Daryl Davis was able to befriend 200 KKK members and convince them to hang up their robes just by talking to them.

I really hope this triggers a diplomatic incident. The French ambassador in Tokyo should have to explain themselves over this.
@RWhite_Ай бұрын
@@wristcontr0l Unless Assassin's Creed Shadows was funded, or in some part directed by the government, there's no reason the French Ambassador should be expected to explain anything about this. That said, I do hope it triggers something in Japan. Something to make them aware of the growing acceptance of racism towards Asian people and cultures in the west.

ok i never noticed but the trailers for Ghost of Yotei already did more than what Ubi did, they gave Japanese Voice for Japan trailer. 😂 Another irony is that Ubi claims for historical accuracy while getting alot of details wrong meanwhile Sucker Punch never claimed accuracy yet got alot of the details right. 🤣 Honestly, about the VA thing maybe it will or it won't affect things much since VAs don't usually have a say in how the game should go, also there are VAs for other languages too, am just keeping an open mind here so only time will tell whether am right or wrong.

This game looks like it's trying to be Sucker Punch's own Red Dead Redemption. Can't wait to see more of it! I have seen people being worried about the game because of the VA's activism, and while I understand where they're coming from, to those people I say: be patient, let's wait to see what they show in the future before casting judgement. Sucker Punch did an excellent job with Ghost of Tsushima, I think they deserve a little bit more trust from us gamers. Also, I would say that the protagonist's in-game model looks pretty cute! That is a good sign! Try to be more optimistic, people! Don't let fear and anxiety ruin your anticipation for what could be a great game. And when the time to decide comes, if we like it, we buy! If we don't like it... we Ubisoft it! 🤣

Jammy! Don't get divorced brother, your channel wont survive. Wife cracks me up every vid. Also, glad you guys arent jumping on the minority hate train. Suckerpunch doesnt give af about politics and voice actresses don't have control over shit.
@DashBlueАй бұрын
I know brother! Happy wife happy life! yeah if we see signs that Sucker Punch has let it affect the game in a negative way we'll cover it, otherwise it's not really worth mentioning too much thank you for the comment!
@DionysosDrinkerАй бұрын
Bro. It is not some hate about minorities. It is because the VA is an extreme man hating extremist. It just happens that she is Asian. So what? I was born in Asia to and don't like her. And brother VAs and localizers have a lot of power. Why do you think a lot of dubs from Japanese animes and games are so different to the western ones? And I mean not different in the sense of tailored to another culture but different in the sense that they censore jokes and whole sentences to replace them with stuff like "are you Sure the monster is a he?" (Eiyuden Chronicles). Woke activists always do harm original material.
@DeathstroАй бұрын
There is no “minority hate train” people are apprehensive because of the unhinged VA. The idea everyone is hating for no reason is just what anti-anti-woke people are saying to devalue their concerns
