The book ending is way better.... (spoiler) in the book Este comes out to the orthodox community as a lesbian and her courage to tell the truth enables other woman to come out about the secrets they are living with. She becomes the defacto Rabbi of her community, because people seek her advice more than her husbands. Both the movie and the book end with her remaining with her husband. But, if they are staying together, I root for a world where Este can be open and honest with the world around her and she makes her community female focused for the first time.
@momomorton6476 жыл бұрын
100%. In the book, I feel like it made much more sense for Este to stay in the community because she did feel that she belonged there. She had a love for her husband even if it was non-sexual. Este was not meant to be with Ronit, I felt. Haven't seen the movie, so I'm only talking about the book lol
@roshn.i6 жыл бұрын
@@momomorton647 no you should see the movie. The movie ending was very fitting. Este and Ronit loved each other for years but the community barred that. That's why she upped and left, but Este was not strong enough too. The community shut Ronit out and it was Este that even called Ronit back for her father's funeral. It always seemed like she wanted to escape, to be free. That's a major part of the movie dialogue, how god made Angels, beasts and man, but only man has the power to disobey, to be free of god's word and god's cycle. And Este finally exercises that power.
@momomorton6476 жыл бұрын
@@roshn.i Sure, but it's a completely different story. The book ending wouldn't have worked in the movie and vice versa. They're barely even comparable, though. Basically two entirely separate sets of characters and plots, in my opinion.
@roshn.i6 жыл бұрын
@@momomorton647 true true. The emotions and feel the book tried to convey was very different from the movie. I personally think the movie was more realistic as a person who grew up in a tight knit community, esti choosing to not only stay but give up all her hopes was a bit odd. I understand that she was used to the community and had a soft spot for it but it just felt so wrong
@m.luisam.54846 жыл бұрын
UwU These happenings are much more real than you think. My gf left me because she couldn’t hide (me) anymore. She chose to live by her religion and to live among her family instead. She grew up believeing (jehova witness) that what she learned was the truth, and in being gay, she would lose her family. It was very hard for her but she ultimately made her choice. I can’t do anything but support her.

They changed a lot of things from the book and this is one of the first times I thought the film adaption is a lot better than the book (Ronit was a cheater in the book). also, about the ending of the film, i think it's a happy ending. like genuinely a happy ending. esti is deliberated and ronit has found peace. they're making plans to meet again. and it feels real that they'd need a bit time to themselves, though, to just breath a bit.
@nataliew.29656 жыл бұрын
just laura this!! I’m 100% with you here. I wasn’t too thrilled about the ending the first time I watched it, but when I re-watched it recently I realized that the ending was actually the best possible outcome for all characters (in the most realistic way they could’ve done it within the confines of this plot/setting). All the characters, including David, got their version of freedom and peace. I adore this film now. It’s so intimate and emotionally poignant. Definitely one of my favorites of the year.

I took the ending much happier than you did guys. Cuz like yes, I get that they separated at the end but I feel like they plan on meeting up in the future and be together. Also Dovid ended up being a good guy so I thought about it all more like this movie is a "Calzona+Mark" version than something bad haha
@sophiee32056 жыл бұрын
Esti's husband is actually really nice and understanding in the book. they end up staying together, raising their child, because they still love each other platonically. Also, in the book Ronit did not have any strong feelings for Esti. The story was less of a romance and more of an exploration of these small religious communities and the choices women must make in identifying with them. Its a good book; Naomi Alderman is very talented.

First of all, fun video as usual . I enjoy very much this show, this channel- including Parallel, Aliee Chan and Lys Perez, and of course Amanda, are all a delight to watch. But since there was an Asian guest for an Asian film, Black guest for black films and a trans guest for a trans film, I wonder if the option of having Jewish guest for watching this film was not even considered? ( this is a question- not an accusation) "I don't know anything about this culture" is not obligatory... it's not as if there was never a Jewish guest on this channel. Of course, different Jewish sub-cultures are very different from one another, and a lot of secular Jews don't have a lot of knowledge of the Ultra Orthodox Jewish world (which is what is depicted in the film), but actually this Jewish guest I referred to earlier does have some experience with it- besides, I think a secular Jewish guest would be better than no Jewish guests at all. I do however don't state that including a Jewish guest should be "obligatory", and that if this video couldn't be shot with a Jewish guest it shouldn't have been shot at all. Speaking of Jewish sub-cultures, the Orthodox and Jewish Orthodox world itself is very divided, and there are different customs about head covering- to shave the head and cover it with a wig is only one of them, and not a very common one. Covering hair with wigs as depicted in the film definitely exists. As a Queer Jewish woman who used to live in the neighborhood where the film is taking place-though I never was Ultra Orthodox, but I had some contact with the local Ulrta Orthodox community- this film evoked a lot of feelings for me, and while I consider it a missed opportunity not to include someone who is more familiar with this material in the video, it's wonderful to see how people who are aren't familiar with it are moved to tears by the film; so was the girl who sat next to me in the cinema in Warsaw. I hope you might consider to add a Jewish guest if you ever again view a film in which Judaism or Jewishness play a major role, for example The Secrets. Of course, I apologize ahead if I made wrong assumption about any of you.

As with every community or group, there's a lot of differences amongst the Jewish community and a lot of different sects within it. Y'all mentioned you didn't know if women were supposed to shave their heads when they got married or not and as you saw in the movie, that's not always the case. Again, there are so many different customs that people have and follow, but for the most part women don't shave their heads upon marriage. Some do just because it's easier and less overwhelmingly hot to have a wig or other head covering on top of their own hair, but what y'all were mentioning is more of a thing that some more religious sects teach and follow. And even then some shave when they get married and some do afterwards so there's a bit of differences between that custom as well. All in all, I really enjoyed this video of yours and I'm grateful y'all watched it since there was no way I could possibly have gone to see it when it came out so this gave me some way of seeing a bit of it. I appreciate that you made the note about the onesies and how it was a decision made earlier and it wasn't meant to be offensive or anything - although personally I thought it was great and y'all should do it again if you want! It's always difficult to accurately portray a community especially with all its variances, but from what I saw of this movie they did a much better job than I was expecting which is great and y'all were good to be open about not knowing so much about it. Anyway sorry for the long comment, but I just wanted to let y'all know you're doing a great job and this was super well filmed! And that Parallel trailer! Ah!
