Sorry to say this but Simon really didnt see some very simple things like: 1) The moment r3c7 becomes green - r3c8 and r3c9 become gray since there is a 5 in the cage, 2) you can even start the puzzle with shading r9. 31 clue says there are at least 6 gray cells there so at least r9c5 and r9c6 become gray.
@igronus
@igronus 2 жыл бұрын
@@tyomytch9945 31 can be done in five cells. Also, your shading logic is incomplete: if six perimeter Yin Yang cells in are shaded, the central box is always shaded.

Thanks a lot for the feature! It was a great pleasure to watch and I enjoyed every second of it, although I simultaniously felt bad that the puzzle stressed out Simon so much. Sorry for that! I was quite impressed with drunk Simon's solving ability. He squeezed out an immense amount of information using everything BUT the intended solve path. I would love sober Simon revisiting the first few steps of the intended path to see that there is indeed an easier way of solving this. For everybody who wants to attempt this: Don't get intimidated by the length of the video. There is a very logical solve path and the individual deductions are all very approachable. If you find yourself getting stuck, I have included some hints on logicmasters germany. Thanks again for the feature and all the nice comments!

Sober Simon is a scalpel, slicing to the heart of the puzzle and making massive deductions that cause it to fall away. Drunk Simon is a sledgehammer, beating away at the puzzle, causing it to slowly chip and crack, until the sheer volume of his attacks cause it to crumble. Both Simons are better at Sudoku than I am.

At 48:15 Simon puts corner marks in r7c5 and r9c5 indicating that the 4 in box 8 must go into one of those two cells. However, r8c5=4 is also possible. He doesn't use this incorrect deduction though. He correctly has 4789 in r7c5, r6c4, and r9c5, and later (at 54:30) correctly deduces that r9c4 is 7, 8, or 9. This 4789 quadruple in box 8 then leads him to correctly place 23 in r8c5 and retroactively justifies his corner marks. Phew!

From very near the beginning, Simon figured out the 4-cell vault consisted of 123s, and determined it had to include a 3, so three of the four cells were shaded. Shortly after that, he figured out that the top two cells of the vault were one each, shaded and unshaded. At that point, the bottom two cells were known to be shaded, but it was a LONG time before that actually happened.

@36:00 the most complicated way to figure out those two cells a grey... far easier is just to notice that *there is a 5 in the vault* the vault has 6 cells total, you've already proved on is unshaded so every other cell in it must be shaded to get to 5 shaded cells. So r3c8 and r3c9 are a 1,4 pair and r3c7 is a 5.

The early logic where you were seeing if the 2 and 5 in row 3 might be in the right vault, you could've ruled that out right away. You noted that that would force a 1/3 pair in the vault on the left, but that they would both have to be green. But then you'd have a 3 in the vault and could only shade 2 cells. Similarly, when you determined that the vault on the right had to be either a single 5 with a green and grey cell, or a 1/4 pair with two grey cells, it had to be the latter. The former would only give you four shaded cells in that vault.

84 minutes for me! I usually don’t attempt puzzles that take Simon over an hour, but he said something wrong almost immediately and I thought I would take a crack at it. I did it in an opposite way from him, too. I assigned colors to the cells in box 2 and used vault logic to propagate those around the grid, mostly ignoring shading rules. After about 50 minutes I was sure I’d squeezed everything from it, I left my digits and pencil marks, cleared the coloring and then the shading fell out almost immediately. I had to backtrack at one point because I can’t add to 16 (while sober). 😂 A really fun puzzle!

The 5 in box 3 bothered me. Maybe it's the drunkeness? But you had a 4 and a 5 in a 6 cell cage. That means there can only be 1 green cell...........but you already had 1 green cell meaning that a 5 being the 5 clue would have included a 2nd green cell which is impossible making it a 1/4 pair. Much easier than what you came up with.

The way I solved this one was by focusing on my 123s. I pencil marked in parity on my 2s and 3s after discovering where my 1s were, and that propagated through the board, and helped me to disambiguate a lot of the pairs and triples and quadruples. Took me 200 mins, so I'm still worse than drunk Simon, but I'm happy to have solved my 3rd variant sudoku. It's always cool seeing where I could improve my logic when I watch the video after solving. edit: I just got to the part where Simon ended up marking 2-3 parity as well, so I'm glad that I did something right!

At 48:15, Simon actually makes a mistake that makes the puzzle easier, by assuming that 4 can't go in the middle cell of box 8, which at this point it absolutely can. He later uses this to exclude 4 from the rest of the cage. He got lucky with this one. Edit: it's actually not that hard to prove 4 can't go in there, just requires a few extra steps, so not a massive puzzle-breaking mistake.

By the length of this video, either this is a very hard puzzle, or Simon is drunk and his brain isn't working.

Loved it. You missed some things-likely due to being slightly inebriated-I thought you might spot earlier, like the 9 in r1c6. Didn't make it any less enjoyable to watch.

Cheers Simon 🍾🍷🍸🍹🍻🥂 What a marvellously entertaining solve. 👍 36:05 the easier way to do it is to count the number of grey cells you have in the vault which must have a total of 5 grey cells.

Love how well Simon rips through the Yin/Yang part and determines the number of shaded cells in a vault, only to completely forget about the shading rule and its largest number! I'll blame the alcohol. 😜

So that last rule also means you can't have digits in a blue vault larger than the number of cells in the vault.

As I am starting to write this comment I am still chuckling over your closing - so frantically hurried. Sorry, I should not laugh, I know. OK, no more laughing. But I will say that this was a very enjoyable puzzle and video - very fun. I love the yin yang part, it actually made sense to me. I really must look up some of those that are not related to sudoku (they all aren't, are they?) because I have decided that they look like fun. The vault/yin yang combo in this puzzle was really excellent. I loved watching the logic unfold. Thanks for this puzzle, Schwupel, and thank you for the video, Simon!! (Other than your repeatedly mentioning it, no one would have guessed, I think, that you had had anything to drink. I am sure this reference to adult beverages makes it all more fun for many viewers!)

Great puzzle. I made a mistake while solving it and realized that you can swap the 7 and 8, and the 2 and 3, make the 8 clue a 7, and you have a second solvable puzzle with the same ruleset and the same grayed cells but one (the one referred by the 2 clue).

I reread that first line of the rules multiple times just to make sure it was indeed saying "Normal Sudoku rules apply". For me, the coloring was also relatively easier, but I had a good deal of trouble with placing values after that. I had to backtrack several mistakes made from mixing up rules around the Vaults and also missed some simple deductions from their properties.

56:06 finish. Of course, I will never be able to duplicate Simon's feat, as a (not quite complete) teetotaler, who gave it up after drinking too much during his college years. A drunk Simon? Oh no, I'm going to be hoarse at the end of this! Your second yin yang secret was only partially correct, at least for this puzzle. There's nothing in these rules about either colour having to connect to the edge, so one colour could entirely surround the grid, completely containing all of the other colour. The 31 clue puts an end to that, but until you get there, the secret should have been that there can be no more than two runs of colour around the edge. You missed an opportunity for a super-quick first digit. None of the vaults is 9 cells, so none can contain a 9. So where does 9 go in C6? Your tipsy brain did spot this 18 minutes in, but failed to spot (until 56 minutes in) that this gives you a second 9 in R6C7. The right-most vault must contain a 5 (from the 12345), which puts a shaded cell on the edge. The 31 clue must cover the 5th cell, so it must be shaded. You've got a green on the edge in C1, so you can join the shaded cells around the SE corner. Avoiding a 2x2 means the vault on the bottom cannot contain an 8, so the vault above it must contain an 8, and is therefore all shaded. You can't have two shaded next to this in R1, so green must extend to at least R1C5. The 31 clue cannot stretch to the last two cells in the row, so they must be green, and join to the others. At 21 minutes, your addled brain was discussing putting the 2 in box 3, completely oblivious to the shaded 678 earlier in the row, which forced the 2 into the 2x2. Having placed a green in a 6-cell vault with 5 shaded cells, you could have just shaded the rest of the cells, and skipped the repeated debates over whether the 5 clue was a single digit. You correctly point out that the top of the 2x2 can only have one shaded cell, but don't immediately shade the bottom two, because you know there is a 3 in the vault. You spent ages considering which of the cells along the top row next to the vault could be grey. Well, given your second rule, if any are grey, it could only be the one in box 3, any more and you either get a 2x2 or more than two runs of colour in the perimeter. I don't think you can blame inebriation here, because you do the same sort of thing for every chaos construction - considering in great depth situations that are utterly impossible. You placed the 6 in box 2, ruling it out of the upper vault, so where does it go in C6? You eventually spotted this, but it took a while. 35 minutes in, and you're *still* trying to fit a second green in a 6-cell vault that needs 5 shaded cells. In the end, you fixed this by the most circuitous route imaginable. You have a knack of forgetting the most powerful rule in any situation, and try to use the less powerful ones instead. Consider ALL rules ALL of the time. When you work out the vault in box 9 contains 2 and 3, how can you not see that the empty cell in R8C5 must be the second 23 in the box? I wouldn't say this was easy, but you made it look much, much harder than it really was. Your yin yang was certainly not as good as you think it was, but your judgement may be impaired. Sure enough, I'm hoarse now, but it was fun (if a tad uncomfortable at times) watching you make a fool of yourself on camera. I really liked this ruleset. There were lots of interesting things going on, most of which passed you by. Can we have more please? You could try the next one sober and see if you do any better.
