The entire ball needs to completely cross the line for it to be a goal. You can imagine a permeable wall that extends up from the line, and every part of the ball needs to go completely through that wall. Same rule applies for going out over the touch line for a throw-in, or across the goal line for a corner or goal kick.

It's also worth pointing out that most official games nowadays (for big leagues at least) have the goal line technology that lets the ref know if the ball has gone over the line or not (note that this is also different from VAR, it's a tech that doesn't need any human assistance to work and lets the ref know on his watch), so goals are never missed (unless there's some deffect with the tech off course)

Rather than guessing on most of the closer shots, goalkeepers can often tell by a player’s body shape where the ball is going to go. The next thing to do then is go that way and make yourself as big as possible. Some of it admittedly will be guesswork though. The one with the head wasn’t showboating either. His team mate kicked it too him, so he can’t use his hands. A rule invented to stop the keeper rolling it to a defender then picking it up after he passes it back repeatedly to waste time when a team is winning

Also, on the save where the keeper was sprinting all the way back down the field, something teams do in a losing situation when they get a corner kick is push the keeper up for the corner. As keepers are typically among the tallest players on the pitch, it often takes a strong aerial defender away from marking a better offensive player, and overloading the box gives the losing side a better chance of scoring.

7:19 I don't know the entire context of that specific play, but sometimes, if the team is awarded a corner kick when one goal behind or tied with few minutes to go, the goalkeeper heads over to the other box so that there is an extra player that could head the kick into the net. 5:19 the goalie had to do that save, as the ball he was receiving was a back pass from a teammate, not a shot from an opponent. In football the goalie cannot use his hands to catch a ball sent to them by their teammates, otherwise it would result into a handball and an indirect free kick. Only exception is when the goalie teammate doesn’t intentionally pass the ball to the goalie, say if there was a scrap for the ball in the box and the teammate accidentally kicks the ball back to the goalie, then the goalie can catch the ball in his hands without it being a foul.

Same rule for all lines, it doesn't matter where the player foot is like in football, in futebol the only thing that matters for goals or off-sides is if the ball is completely out of the field, and the field includes the lines.

That unnecessary save was Renee Higuita's scorpion save. That guy loved to show off. And, because of that, he could be a nightmare for both teams, the adversary and his own. He even liked abandoning the goal and going to the attack, and worse, he somehow managed to score somethimes

the dud with the scorpion save is the most legendary goal Keeper. for gol the ball need to cross the line dont need to touch the grand , need to cross the full ligne .
@Shomononosh10 ай бұрын
As a lot of people have said, the ball has to completely cross the goal line for a goal to count, doesn't matter if it's in the air or on the ground when it crosses it (same for throw-ins, goal kicks, corner kicks, etc). However, until the 2014 world cup, it was mostly at the ref's discretion in cases when it wasn't super clear, or if the ball bounced back outside the goal. Now we've got Goal Line Technology, where there's a certain amount of high-speed, high-resolution cameras pointed at each goal at various angles, and if the ball crosses the line, the ref is notified with their wristwatch vibrating, that's why if you watch games you might sometimes see the ref and their assistants carrying the ball into each net, to check if GLT works. FIFA execs were against the implementation of technology in the game because of fears that it'd remove the "human element", but as we've seen even with VAR, ref mistakes are far from being things of the past. One of the most infamous cases was in the 2010 world cup RO16, when English midfielder Frank Lampard's goal at the 38th minute was disallowed: ball hit the crossbar, bounced into the goal (pretty far in, too) and right back out. Neuer, the German keeper, couldn't do anything. Would've been pretty important given the fact that they would've been able to come back from being down 2-0 to tying the game in like 2 or 3 minutes, but they ultimately lost 4-1

I heard you saying: “how is that not offside?” At 1:35 so I thought to write down how offside works in football. It’s offside when someone passes the ball to a teammate and at the moment of the pass there are less then 2 defensive players (goalkeeper included) between the receiver of the pass and the goal line. There are some exceptions: - no offside if the receiver is in his defensive half court at the moment of the pass, - if the ball goes out of bounds on the sideline, there’s no offside on the throw in to put the ball back in play, - no offside if the receiver is behind the ball at the moment of the pass.

5:25 it's necesary, à goalkeeper can't take a pass from his team with the hands 😉
@Tunnir Жыл бұрын
As some people already explained when it counts as a goal, here is another tidbit for the things that flabbergasted you: The keeper can't touch the ball with their hand if it's their teammate passing it with their foot, as that would give a free kick to the opposition.
@MrJorge3010 Жыл бұрын
When you see a keeper save it with his head (like in 5:28 and 14:20), it's most likely because it was a back pass by a teammate so he can't use his hands. When the back pass is that awful sometimes it leads to funny saves like that (or own goals). When you see a keeper all the way up the other end of the pitch (like in 7:20) it's probably because the game is almost over and the team are losing by one goal, so the goalkeeper sometimes goes up for corners to try to equalise because they have nothing to lose. I have no explanation for 14:48 the man was just nuts and it was magnificent

I know i'm over a year late, but my 2 cents as a goalkeeper: Goalkeeping is actually a lot about reading body language AND the field, and based on information making educated guesses and reflexes for the close-ups. Goalkeepers are the only one who at all times have a view of the entire pitch, so is also the main man who organizes the defense (What you actually see on tv is a small subset of goakeeper's responsibilities). A direct command during a play from a goalkeeper will ALWAYS override any other instruction, even from or to the captain, and always has highest priority no matter what. So some of the moments you see and think goalkeepers are proud of the save and stoked, they're actually mad at the defense for letting the opposition take the shot at goal or get though, because basically if the goalkeeper has to make a save, defense has failed in its job (Especially 1v1). In a 1-on-1 situation for example, a striker/forward is expected to score, and those saves though not flashy, are some of the most difficult to make in the entire game. Diving looks cool and flashy, but for longer shots, you have time to adjust and position a little better, generally speaking (its still split second, but as a goalkeeper even that less that a second extra makes a big difference)

the goalie sometimes comes up for corner kicks if the team really needs a goal, or some goalies in history have been known as crazy free kick takers, and that could have been a counter attack after one of these instances

You should react to "Ronnie Hellström a tribute to a legendary goalkeeper". It's a really old school keeper with a lot of style who was absolutely incredible in the 70's. He was European GK of the year for 4 years in a row. It's just a great video that I always come back to. He played for the Swedish national team, Hammarby in Sweden and then Kaiserschlauten in Germany during the 70's

Every keeper has their own style of what gives them the focus and ability to pull off some of the "impossible" saves such as the point blank headers or 70 mph balls these players are hitting. As an ex keeper myself (sunday league not pro) there are a lot of tell tale signs, players often use their eyes, so even if they don't turn their head to look, they will glance to get a good idea before the shot, the body language too because if a player is in a certain position like leaning back and slightly to the left you know they are going to try bend it high (depending how far back they lean) to their right etc or if they are at an angle they are limited with what they can do so that is give it a moment to see how they adjust for the shot and that split second of patience can give you all the information you need. And I can't speak for all, but for me there was a lot of "anger" and adrenaline, and that added a lot of focus, especially for dangerous situations throwing myself into a crowded group of players all kicking and jumping, or a speeding bullet of a ball, things just seemed to slow down a bit. I knew a keeper that used to joke that the ball was his brother in laws face and he just wanted to grab it or punch it as hard as he could, he was amazing to watch as well. He had trophies and medals to spare

For a goal to be awarded ALL of the ball MUST pass over ALL of the line.
@RaanDohmSchitt Жыл бұрын
two things: 1. if a player passes the ball to his own keeper using his legs or feet, then the keeper is not allowed to use his hands. 2. the ball has to pass the line entirely to be considered a goal, no matter the position within the posts.

My man, it’s 10am here so not drinking yet. But usually dark & stormy’s or margaritas from The Netherlands. Been checking out your content since last week, it’s great to see you enjoy football and being so open to it! Also to help you clarify a couple of things: - the ball needs to be completely over the line to be considered a goal or out of play, so that also goes for the touchlines. It doesn’t matter if the ball is in the air or not. - a keeper isn’t allowed to grab a ball that has been returned to him by his teammates feet. Any other bodypart (except for hands and arms ofcourse) is legal. - offsides only counts on the moment the ball is played to an attacker that is both behind the 2nd last defender (the goalkeeper counts as a defender) and is on the opposition’s half. So if he’s broken though he isn’t offside necessarily. - this isn’t football related but pissed means drunk in uk english. If you’ve got a discord channel or something I’d love to show you some cool football content you might like. Anyways thanks for the video!

its impressive the wrist strength that some keepers have. many of us train them specifically. while it is impressive, if youre hand is getting shot at with that much power at that close a range youre going to have a sore wrist and possibly hyper extended fingers for a good few days.

The save with the head is to prevent becoming foul of the backpass rule. The rule is that the GK can't use his hands/arms if his own teammate has deliberately kicked the ball to him, so by heading it the GK prevents the opponents getting a free kick 3 yards away from the goal
@shaneg9081 Жыл бұрын
"Why was the goalie so far away?" Most likely scenario, it's late in the game, they have a corner or goal kick, and putting one in on the opponent decides the game, so it is all hands on deck.
@mchardify Жыл бұрын
14:21 there is a rule that if the ball comes to the keeper from his own teammate (except if the teammate is passing the ball with his head) than the keeper can't touch it with his hands and thats why in here the keeper tried to use his head to save it.
@thegreatchallenge596321 күн бұрын
The goal line clearance they do with their head is usually done to rescue a team mates poor backwards pass. If you use your hands on a backwards pass it’s a yellow-red with a penalty or indirect free kick within the box.

If you're a new fan I would recommend watching either a single entire game or the extended highlights of a game to get the general feel of the game as these compilations are good but chances are nothing like it is gonna happen in the average game Edit: I would also recommend choosing a team (I'd recommend Liverpool) and following them through a season so you can experience the highs and lows of being a football fan

The one where the keeper headed it - he couldn't touch the ball and catch it with his hands because it was a back pass so he headed it just to avoid giving away a free kick
