My local tradition is the haxey hood. It's been going on longer than the cheese rolling and tar barrels and most other tradiations. The hood has gone on once a year for 700 years. Rumour is, it started in the 14th century when the wife of the local lord was put horse riding from one part of haxey to another. As she crossed a field and went over a hill, her riding hood blew off in the wind. When this happened, 13 farm hands ran after the hood to retrieve it for her ladyship. This took some time as the wind kept blowing hood from anyone's grasp. Eventually, after much scrambling about, the hood was finally retrieved and returned to her ladyship. Her ladyship was so thankful for the hood's return and so entertained by the events of the day that she then donated 13 acres of land be given to the local men so long as they reenacted the events of that day, on the anniversary each year. 700 years later and the sway hood as its known is like a tube, it is thrown into the mass of participants who represent four different local public houses. The idea is for you and your team representing your favourite public house out of the four to get possession of the sway hood and push it to your favourite pub whilst the teams from the other pubs push you away and try to get possession of the hood for themselves. Whichever team gets the hood to thier pub first wins for that year. The hood stays at that pub until next year's event and then everyone drinks the pub dry.

Their is no insurance available for the organisers of the event. The Double Gloucester Cheese weighs about 9lbs and leaps and bounds down the hill at around 70mph If it were to hit a spectator on the side or bottom of the hill it could cause a serious injury for which the cheese supplier could be held responsible and a claim for compensation made against him. The police would not be involved in any case against the supplier but they were right to advise him of the possible consequences if a person was injured by one of his cheeses. The present day cheeses used for the event are not real cheese although the prizes are. Participants and spectators attend at their ow risk. They cannot claim damages if they are injured.

As a Brit - We have some 'mad' games here in the UK... But if you think Cheese-Rolling is crazy, then check this out... ''The Atherstone Ball Game'' A section from Wikipedia - The Atherstone Ball Game is a "Medieval football" game played annually on Shrove Tuesday in the English town of Atherstone, Warwickshire. The game honours a match played between Leicestershire and Warwickshire in 1199, when teams used a bag of gold as a ball, and which was won by Warwickshire. At one time similar events were held in many towns throughout England, but Atherstone's is now one of at last three such games that are still played each year at Shrovetide, the others being the Royal Shrovetide Football match held in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, and The Alnwick Shrovetide Football Match in Alnwick, Northumberland.

I live in a small village in County Durham, in the north east of England. Every year on ‘pancake day’ or shrove tuesday to you probably, we have something called the Sedgefield Ball Game. Basically it’s a game played by hundreds of people where the aim is to get some baseball sized ball into a stream outside the village, and then through a hoop in the middle of the village. It’s absolute chaos. The ball ends up getting taken to all of the pubs in the surrounding villages and you get a free drink if you have the ball in the pub, before anyone even attempts to get it into the correct ‘goals’. All the windows in the villages are boarded up just in case the ball or the hundreds of people chasing it accidentally smash a window, and it’s mostly used as an excuse to go out and get drunk. We used to be able to stay off school on that day and we’d either go drinking on the streets (from age 13+) or join everyone else in the pub (from age 15+), drinking culture here is crazy. The one time I even dared to go near the ball, I ran away from the advancing mob, slipped in the mud and it was all caught on camera, including me friend pointing and laughing at me in the floor 😂 I don’t know if there are videos online or not, but the local news usually covers it, and the game dates back hundreds of years.

Gloucester rhymes with Foster. Shire should be pronounced Shur, hope that helps!
@mysticallymerry55234 жыл бұрын
Yes, reminds me of the old nursery rhyme: Doctor Foster went to Gloucester, in a shower of rain. He stepped in a puddle right up to his middle, and he never went there again!😊

Gloucester pronounced foster. Also we pronounce shire as in sheer

Yes, you are saying Gloucestershire wrong, but it's a very nice alternative way of saying it :D :D Here (at least in South Yorkshire) we pronounce it "Gloss-tuh-shuh" - something like that! (Glouces = Gloss, ter = tuh, shire = shuh). It's hard to put it into written words! ;)

Oh I hated the word Gloucestershire when I first came to the UK. I still struggle with it. It's "glosster-shirr" Or "Glosster-shurr" Depending on accent

1m when an average adult does one large step or as you are into guns, the lenght of an AR-15 is nearly 1m (991mm, 1000 mm = 1m), a Cadillac XT6 is nearly 5m (about 5050 mm, so only two inches away). If you park 2 of them after another you have 10m, the hight of the highest tower for olympic Diving, the hight for the 1700 Pacific in Dallas is nearly 200m (199,7m). I I found out that one block is also 200m, so 5 blocks would be 1000m = 1 km. Two blocks (400m) would be the lenght of one lap of the running track in a stadium for track and field athletics. Usain Bolt was doing 100m and 200m tracks, so half a block and a block.

Gloucestershire lad here Re the pronunciation the county is actually pronounced gloster-shuh Aside from the cheese rolling we also have a few more whacky things based here. Two are them are eating ones, an elver (eel) eating competition as well as an onion eating one along with the Severn Bore which is a wave against the current of the river that attracts quite a few surfers. Here is a video of the bore - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3ykZGyChrR8mc0
