Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to do this video. As a new 2017 Vstrom owner your instruction video was invaluable for what I needed to do in lifting the fuel tank so I could see where I could run a power cable from the battery to some Oxford Heated grips. Some videos show the owner just poking the heated grips wiring under the tank with a stick but I wanted to ensure the wiring did not come into contact with any hot motor parts or anything sharp. By removing the plastic cowling parts and propping up the tank on the propellor stand I had a much clearer view of where to run the wiring. Again, thank Doctor Vstrom

@@DrVstrom Yes, 3 months ago I bought the 3rd gen model. There is quite a lot of noise comming, I think from behind the instrument cluster when I go over bumps or rough roads, which I think is excessive especially for a bike designed for such surfaces. The noise is like a bit of thumping and slight rattle, have you noticed this and if so any idea how to stop this noise?
@DrVstrom
@DrVstrom 5 жыл бұрын
Stan Augustowicz Did you buy it new? If yes then you should tell your dealer from where you bought it. If it’s 2nd hand then it depends on what the previous owner did. If he opened or removed any part and not put it back in the correct way. What I would do is find a safe place and try to go slightly down hill on a road with bumbs with no gear on and no helmet and so as for the engine noise to be minimum and to try and hear where the noise comes from.

Very detailed and well presented episode. I can see why dealers are rubbing their hands as the labour costs run up so quickly these days when it comes to (What should be) a simple task like removing a fuel tank. Damage or break one of those protruding clips on the plastic fairing sections and you'll need to prepare for either an ingenius repair or indeed a sting on your wallet. Thx for putting the effort in and sharing.

Thanks Mark, I appreciate the kind words. That is why I have started doing these videos. I was also not happy with the cost and also risk that the dealer would actually do damage due to lack of knowledge or short service times to have more customers serviced per day.

Thank you for taking the time to produce this tutorial! I would love to see a follow up video showing the steps to replace the spark plugs on the 3rd generation engine. A visual inspection, without removing the plastics or the tank, makes me think that this will be a difficult procedure. Seems a bit ludicrous that the replacement interval for the plugs is only 7,500 miles.
@DrVstrom
@DrVstrom 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Mike, yes the tank needs to come off. For the interval yes, experience has shown that if the engine functions properly you can ignore and perhaps double. In fact I can tell you that I have still not changed the spark plugs on mine because I follow this and I have a lot lot more. That is also the reason I have not yet done a video on the 3rd gen engine sparks. Ride safe.

I am about to do this tomorrow, to install the oem heated grips. The manual for the grips says to remove the air box(to route a wire from the heated grips) and I found some people online, saying that instead of undoing the screw that holds the collar ring for the front cylinder air intake, the tricky one, instead to squeeze the corresponding air tube and pull it through the air box, without undoing said screw and then the reverse when mounting back the air box. Do you think that's a good idea ?
@DrVstrom
@DrVstrom 4 жыл бұрын
You can also use tie wraps and route below or around the airbox. Nevertheless what they suggest from the company should be the most tested approach.
@ioandragulescu6063
@ioandragulescu6063 4 жыл бұрын
@@DrVstrom the OEM heated grips have a small controller box that sits next to the battery, under the seat and the manual says to route the cable that comes with the grips from that, all the way to the front and clip it with zip ties to the main harness, along the way. The connection with the heated grips plugs, left and right, needs to sit right in front of the aribox, in that tight space between the airbox and the main frame. I think I might have enough room to maneuver there, if I remove the airbox cover (could you maybe confirm this ?), I really don't want to take it off :) and many thanks for your videos, they are of great help for strom owners who want to do a bit of tinkering themselves
@DrVstrom

@@ioandragulescu6063 i have an easier solution. You will remove the fuel tank and on the upper part of the air filter box you will put a clamp in the snorkel of the airbox and secure your left right parts there.

@ioandragulescu6063
@ioandragulescu6063 4 жыл бұрын
ok, so I did it. I pulled the front hose through the air box as I said and it wasn't the most elegant solution but it worked and I installed the cable exactly as per the manual. I don't have a long hex screw driver, maybe next time. I had big trouble with one of the fuel tank hoses, the one on the left, with the clamp, it just wouldn't come off so I actually ended up disassembling it on the other end, the one that is close to the left side of the battery. Well, happy to report that everything is back in it's place and the bike works, heated grips included :). As a side note, I used some Honda OEM glue for the left grip and following the instructions of spraying some isopropyl alcohol on the glue, before sliding the grip on the handlebar, it went in like butter, so who knows, maybe a helpful tip for who struggles with changing grips. And another tip, the famed second Aux connector, found on previous models (2012-2016 ones) under the right side of the front fairing, is gone. I think they used it for the cigarette lighter plug, that's on the '17 models and onwards. Need to find another way to connect my GPS device now, since before it was connected to the plug that now has the OEM heated grips in... oh well

Hello Peter. Is this noise present at all speeds and did it appear once you installed the tyres? How about driving for a small distance without helmet and let the bike ride without engine power downhill to identify where it comes from.

@@DrVstrom hi,thanks for reply.i guess its when the engine is not under load.i can hear the engine but its the sort of echoing noise that is louder.sometimes it goes up and down unulating like.the scorpions on before were not that different hence i changed tyres.a helmet off testis a good idea.was thinking to remove ally bash plate see if that makes a difference.at say 70 mph its ok.under load i guess.i dont think its engine or gearbox.its a one owner with full service record.peter

@@peterpyke1213 could be many things really. For instance the chain might need adjustment or some other part might vibrate or even wheel bearings? I would check without helmet and throttle first down hill to exclude the engine. Then the bearings, chain and any engine or other aftermarket bars and protectors that might vibrate. Keep me posted. Hope you Id that fast :)

Hi Doctor, i'm Stefano from Italy. Thanks for your videos. I like to do maintance by myself. Now i own an V-strom 650 2017. I bought it on month ago, with 13.000 km. Now, considering the particular situation i'm thinking to take care about my moto and i would like to check the air filetr and the candles. Do you think it's too early? Considering the necessary time to disassembly al the parts, do you think that in any case is better to substitute candles and filters? Last week i clean the chain and was very dirty. Thanks!Bye!

Stefano, thanks for your message and I wish Italy to quickly get better with the current issue. Now regarding your question, it all depends on how the previous owner maintained the bike. Normally for the spark plugs and as long it runs normally, I would avoid changing them now. The air filter yes please change it or clean it if it seems to be in good condition. If in a good condition use a vacuum cleaner and clean the different air pockets. If not replace it. One last thing to mention is that I advice you since you will remove the fuel tank, and because it has already been 3 years with your radiator coolant, it’s a good idea to replace it because it is not connected to kms but with time it looses its properties and then breaks down without lubricating the pump and or protecting from corrosion. Also you may consider cleaning and lubing your brake calipers. There are detailed videos to do both. Let me know if you have any questions. Ciao, The Doc.

@@DrVstrom Thanks. Regarding the brakes, do you think that i can do it by myself? I like me to do this things but i'm not an expert technician. Instead, about the radiator coolant, should be more easy. I don't find your video but i can follow the manual. Do you suggest ti use the original coolant or other one? Thanks again. Best regards.
@DrVstrom
@DrVstrom 4 жыл бұрын
Stefano Lubiato Brakes are easy. If you want watch the video and see how you feel. I cover every step. For the coolant here is a video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpK6i6ePaJ6HjtE. You can use the same suzuki uses if you can find it and is logical price. If not get the one from ipone for motorcycles. www.ipone.com/en/product/radiator-liquid/ . Always always for motorcycles and better premixed (50 coolant 50 water). Ciao

@@DrVstrom I'll check it! But i see that this coolant is difficult to find. Is the same product used on the cars? What could be an honest price? Thank you so much.
@DrVstrom
@DrVstrom 4 жыл бұрын
Stefano Lubiato never put coolant for cars in motorcycles. Now suzuki has the blue same one the bike has if you got to a suzuki motorcycle dealer they have it. The good thing is because it is the same you don’t need to clean well the previous one. It’s not good to mix different coolants. Otherwise a good price for a motorcycle coolant for aluminum engines is around 10 E/ liter (starts from 7 ). Ipone, motul, etc as long as they are 3 years to change and you flush clean well the old coolant.

Dr. STorm, Suzuki does not call it a propeller, they call it a prop. Yes, this is short for propeller but it also means support. It is used to "prop" up the tank while you disconnect the cable and fuel line. One question, do you need to empty the tank before removal?
@DrVstrom
@DrVstrom 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Kev, thanks for the message. Actually lately Suzuki refers to it as "fuel tank mount stay", but who cares really all you need it is to support the fuel tank. Anyways, I think you should watch the entire video if and when you need it as I do mention that you do not have to empty the fuel tank. Only 2 or 3 drops will come out so all good.

@DrVstrom
@DrVstrom 6 жыл бұрын
Alex Alex its like night and day. Just to name a few things, the new one is a more complete machine that has solved many of the problems the old one had. It is faster, well balanced, that assists in low revs automatically, it has traction control that actually works, is more environmental friendly, same bulletproof engine but with a lot of advancements, it has also digital-dash with a wealth of info including battery indication, a power plug for your mobile phone and gps, better brakes, etc. Of course its not perfect but I will cover that in a near future video. Hope that helps

If you need to change the oil for a super car, it is super expensive and one needs to take almost all parts around the engine. www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/watch-how-the-21-000-27-hour-oil-change-is-done-on-a-bugatti-veyron-ar181881.html hahahah
