Would strongly suggest that anyone who is considering a new tow truck watch Marc of Keep Your Daydream video on towing. I towed heavy boats professionally for over 30 years and I learned some things from Marc that I had not considered before. In the end it all boils down to numbers that go beyond the horsepower and stated tow capacity of the truck you are considering. By the numbers most RV's I see on the road are being towed by trucks with axles that have too low a carrying capacity and trucks that have too small of a combined weight rating. It's tough to buy a new truck only to find out it does not have the correct capacity to tow your desired rig.

The safety mindset of the dually and having one extra tire if one blows is wrong in most cases. The majority of time when you actually blow a tire on a dually it's actually the good tire that blows. Reason for this is it's doing double duty taking the load for both tires because the other tire is low or flat, so it heats up until it can't take it anymore and blows leaving you with 2 flat tires on the side of the road. But this is why a walk around before any trip is a big thing so you can find that low tire before you are left stranded with two tires or better yet a tpms system to alert you while driving incase you've picked up something to cause a tire to go flat or over heat the good tire.

Honestly, having a dually vs a single rear axle only really matters on the "tongue weight" and axle gear ratio that you'll need

I would also mention, regarding looking at tires, that I hate today's tendency for the dealer/manufacturer to put 22" wheels on. Those make for a rougher ride and very expensive replacements. I would much prefer 17 or 18".

DRW vs SRW you failed to mention tire weight capacity...two tires can carry more weight without the tire capacity being overloaded than can a srw regardless of advertised payload.

Love your videos and the great family you two have. But had to comment on this one. So on the comments about stability and traction on the dually please understand that traction is actually reduced. In snow, ice, and wet roads the rear end of a dually will break free easier than a SRW. The dual wheels can hydroplane easier too. I chose my truck and did debate but ultimately I also use it to get into the snow and go over mountain passes empty so I chose the SRW. As for the dually 1 ton sitting better than a single rear wheel 1 ton that’s not really true either. Both have 1 ton suspension. If you don’t need airbags on a dually you won’t need them on a SRW towing the same camper (assuming same year and model of truck). Now if you’re leveled like the dodge in the video was then yes, when you attach the load the rear will drop and make the front sit high which is fixed with airbags. I tow a 13k pound 35’ fifth wheel. Which actually on my stock truck (2017 F350) I had to lift the trailer 3.5 inches to make it ride level and avoid uncomfortably close bed to trailer clearance.

I have enjoyed each of your posts in the past. I have learned a great deal from each of you. In point of fact I purchased my Demco hitch after watching the benefits to a short bed. The only issue of concern with our 2005 Dodge Ram 2500, was additional stability on long hauls such as our recent trip to Sturgis with our Keystone Raptor 3912LEV. Upon our return home within one week of unhitching the rig I blew a steel belt in my driver side rear tire. It was so unnerving that in the last month I removed the SRW axle and replaced it with a DRW axle with a 3.73 ratio both before and after. 13 MPG for 4200 miles. Driving from Florida to South Dakota I had but one fear, a rear blowout with the SRW. I was smart enough to purchase a TPMS prior to the trip which I admit my eyes were glued to 90 percent of the time. The Potholes of Illinois and St.Louis scared me the most. Dually rear wheels will let you limp of the road to the shoulder or to the next exit. If you have a single rear wheel blow out, you are stuck where you are with rim damage as well. Keep up the good work and thanks for the tips.

Dually, regardless Unless you enjoy being blown around in cross winds or passing big rigs. I read someone saying the dually had less traction, not something I ever experienced with a 4500lb pin weight. 3 fifth wheels including 1 toy hauler I would never use a srw again. Both do work just the dually is less stress in a stressful conditions. Happy travels all

We have a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500. It’s had its issues but it’s been a great option for us. Our trailer is close to the max of our truck. However we usually travel to a location for months on end. So we haven’t had a ton of issues. If our travel style changes we will definitely consider changing trucks and or RV.

Great head to head comparison and reasonings. I always love the blowout comment. What if the front blows out? Big note to everyone to check the rear capacity. My 07 Cummins megacab SRW only has 1900lb capacity. Subtract the family and fuel... ouch! (Pretty certain it was some strange conservative time as the GVWR is only 9000 lbs!?) I did up to some 19.5 wheels for added safety margin.

The older trucks, like the dually in this video, aren't rated to tow as much as the newer trucks like the Ram in the video. I can't find too much that they have changed on these trucks (within reason and speaking of trucks that aren't too old either, 2010 and up let's say) for them to tow so much more other than advertising.

4 me I chose a Dually because at slippery boat ramps, it's all about surface area contact. I tow a 38TopGun & boat ramps can b an abso-feckin-lute pain in the ass. Especially in warm climates.
