Bravo! Great for understanding the terms! I do have a question though. Your hitch weight assumes not having a distribution hitch. If you are using one, some of the hitch weight is transferred to the front TV wheels and some to the trailer wheels. Your spreadsheet does not account for that. It could bring the available TV payload up. Is that right? Great video!
@TheMsolomon46 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, I have been watching a few of your videos and they are very well done. On your most recent video there is a very easy fix to your rig. It appears you are calculating for a 15% tongue weight. If you were to continue using your weight distribution hitch, your tongue weight will easily drop closer to 10% (where it should be). This will allow you to pull your rig within the limits. At times when you are going through areas of high wind and or snow you can simply move more weight to the front of the rig in order to allow for more tongue weight which in turn should minimize sway. Thus inabling more control.

Ray Romero I would guess the 150 had a payload of at most~1800 so probably over by ~600 lbs might explain the air bags to level even after the weight distribution hitch. I guess I'd look at a 1 ton truck just for the extra payload when we upgrade

If there were a "Golden Globe" for useful You Tube content, you'd be a sure winner! I almost made the same mistake purchasing a rig that would have been over my tow vehicle's capacity. I was using the truck's sales literature's towing capacity along with the Travel Trailer's GVWR. Everything looked to line up: I have a 12000 tow capacity, and I was buying a 10,000 GVWR trailer. However, a deeper dive into my specific truck and its payload capacity caused me to put the brakes on my trailer purchase. I'm retiring and going full-time within the next month. I cannot afford to travel with a truck/trailer combo that's too close to the limits. Thanks again for this video. I know there are others out there that will tow safer/ live longer as they use the info you provided. AND the spreadsheet was killer!

Finally, somebody got it right! Good job! This is such a misunderstood subject, and it is often ignored. The only addition that I would suggest is checking the hitch rating itself. Example, I was recently going to help a guy haul a Kubota utility tractor on a flatbed trailer. He showed up with a F-350, dually, crew cab, long bed, and a 10,000 GVWR trailer. All of the numbers looked good until I looked at the sticker on the hitch/receiver mounted on the truck... the carrying capacities on the sticker were 6,000 lb towing and 600 lb of tongue weight, making it a Class III hitch. We would've been over on both. So, just because you have a big boy truck doesn't mean that it has a hitch mounted to it that will meet the need. Always check the ratings on the hitch, ball mount, ball, etc.
@KeepYourDaydream6 жыл бұрын
Good point. I'm going to get into hitch weight when we upgraded hitches. I just wanted to stay on the payload issue because it seems that is the biggest limitation and most misunderstood.
@MikeNaples6 жыл бұрын
Larry you might have been looking at only the "WC" specs on that hitch. On my '16 F-150 (with standard tow package-Class IV receiver) carrying capacity on the hitch-receiver is 500# tongue and 5000# towing. The "WD" (weight distribution) specs are 1100# tongue and 11,000# towing. Even though it might have required a WD hitch I'd bet that F350 could have safely towed that trailer. What I don't understand is how a WD hitch can more than double the towing capacity. I understand (I think) the increase in tongue weight capacity.
@keithbyerly29796 жыл бұрын
Keep Your Daydream we ripped off the original hitch on our Motorhome, on our move to AZ from PA. Had a 10,000 lb installed in Wheeling WV, not sorry I did that. Because we used to pull a 10,000 lb box trailer( well a 9999 lb). Better to have over kill 😎
@LeisureTimeLarry6 жыл бұрын
Yeah Mike, it was WC I was looking at because that was the way we were going to pull it. The WD numbers were higher, but we didn't have a WD set up. I'm sure the F-350 would've handled it, I'm just making the point that the hitch system has its own ratings and people need to look at those numbers and factor them into the equation. Thanks for the reply. Safe travels.

This week we bought our first travel trailer. My Nissan Frontier has a tow capacity of 6200# so we bought a Rockwood GeoPro 20bhs that is 3,513 dry with a gvwr of 4,445. I apologize for not saying. We found CAT scales along the major interstate highways truck fueling stops. Not always, but frequently. Big yellow sign CAT Scales. Drive on the scale and speakerphone to the scale person inside a booth far away! I said I wanted a weight ticket for the RV and truck. $11 pay inside. You stay in the vehicle when being weighed. Then drive off scale, go to the scale office, pay the fee and get your certificate. For first timers, a little complicated, but really easy. Good luck!

The CAT scales now have an app for your smart phone. I love it - just drive on the scale and open your app, the app uses gps to know what CAT scale you are on. Tap accept and tap pay on the app ($11) and you get an email with your weights. Don't have to push the button, don't have to talk to anyone, don't have to go inside to pay -- just pull up, open app, activate weighing, get email. Love it!

This is by FAR the best video on this topic. Hands down. There are a number of other videos out there that do a good job (some that do a terrible job) but this one uses real numbers and shows the process of figuring it all out. But what pushes this one over the top is that EXCEL SHEET. Thank you so much for that @Keep Your Daydream!!! With that excel sheet we were quickly able to sort our our weights and pull me back from the edge of cancelling the order on our trailer. This showed we were good and if I then factor in a weight distribution hitch, we are very good in terms of payload. Thank you again! One thing I did go through before this is that I weighed our vehicle with all of us in it with a full tank of gas. I thought the full tank factored into the payload. But it in fact does not as it factors into the Curb Weight. I also was getting Curb Weight and the dry weight of the vehicle (no fuel) which I thought was the GVW. I was wrong again there. Therefore after watching this video I was able to weigh the vehicle again without anyone in it and all the cargo out of it to compare to the manufacturer's posted curb weight and was within 100 lbs of that number. That makes sense to me as we have all the options on the truck so that would account for the extra weight. Key to this, was the difference in that number (manufacturer's posted number and our number at the weigh scale) DOES count against our payload. Curb weight is standard options only. But I now had a good number to go with for what our typical (and then some because we have a sand bag in the truck for winter) payload in the truck would be without the trailer on it. Then add the tongue weight to that to get our final payload needs (again subtract a little if using a weight distribution hitch but that's another topic). Anyway, long paragraph and comment just to say THANK YOU!

This is such important information, thanks for doing this. I've learned a lot of this the hard way as I ratcheted up through various trailers and tow vehicles. So much better to know this stuff up front before making any decisions. Published "tow ratings" mean very little in the real world, and people need to remember they are based on a vehicle and driver only - no other payload or passengers. Nobody travels like that. Salesmen are more focused on sales than safety. The most eye opening moment of my RVing life was the first time I actually went to a cat scale and weighed our setup...not the place to learn. With our truck, trailer, all our stuff, etc, we were within 800 lbs of our gross combined weight rating. Too close for comfort for me, and our tanks were empty and my wife wasn't even in the car. We upgraded the tow vehicle shortly thereafter. Being "undertrucked" as they say is not only no fun but it is potentially unsafe for any RVer and everyone around them. A unique, individual calculation/breakdown like you do here is not only smart, it should actually be REQUIRED before hitting the road.

Mark your right on looking at the numbers. But if you or any of the KYD followers are considering a F-350 or 1 tone truck, please look at the F-450. It's close in price, holds more weight ( think safety and stability) bigger running gear, hubs and breaks. And belive it or not turns sharper and runs over bumpy roads smother. We have had 3/4 and 1 tons. And our F-450 out performs them all Keep up the good info Matt Johnson

matt johnson you need to make sure it is equipped with the wide track front axle in order to get the better turning.
@mattjohnson31406 жыл бұрын
Ray Romero I be live all F-450's come with the wider front end. Ford had to do that to accommodate the larger drive gear and axels that handles the extra weight.
@laurenhansman34476 жыл бұрын
You are correct Matt - all F450 and F550 trucks come with the wider front axle which significantly improves the turning radius. For the model year 2015 and 2016 F350 dually trucks with the max tow option Ford added the F450 wide track front axle. I have a 2015 F350 dually with this option and love the significantly reduced turning radius which is very useful when moving a trailer in tight quarters too. Unfortunately Ford no longer offers the wide track front axle on F350 dually trucks starting with the 2017 model year so one has to purchase an F450 to get the wide track front axle now. Note that although the F450 has a higher towing capacity than an F350 dually, the payload capacity of the F450 truck is actually less than that of an F350 dually. This is because the F350 and F450 dually's both have a GVWR of 14,000 pounds but the larger brakes, running gear, front axle etc. increase the weight of an F450 approximately 1,200 pounds over the of an F350 dually. As a result, the F450 can't carry as much as the F350 dually. Having driven F350's for a number of years, I can say that if I were to purchase a dually again I would definitely go the F450 route as I really like the better turning radius and maneuverability with the wide track front axle. Another great video KYD and please keep them coming. Lauren Hansman

WOW!!!! Wish i seen this video earlier, i have now learned that my NEW 2018 Ram 1500 5,7 Hemi quad cab truck wont tow anything except an under 30 ultra ultra light, almost zero of what i want in a 5th wheel, So now im going to trade to a diesel 1 ton and get a 5th wheel so i can tow in safety with all the goodies on the rig want, Cheers and happy trails,😀
@RiverWoods1114 жыл бұрын
Look at the numbers that that truck can tow, cause a diesel engine weighs more than a gas engine, so you might not be able to tow a 5th wheel with that 1 ton dually even, if the extras on it weigh too much.

The effort made to post information on this topic is very commendable. Any effort to shed light on this subject is noteworthy because too many folks are unable to give it the attention it deserves, as mentioned in the3 video. With credit given, these items need to be mentioned as well: 1. Given there are always factors that will not be accounted for, The goal should be to stay under 80 to 85% of these limits. 2. As touched on Gasoline, propane, batteries and other fluids are not included in the UVW or "dry weight". Neither is the fifth wheel hitch. 3. Payload is the most common overload.

Great video. Your commentary regarding the consequences of operating over gross are definitely worth contemplating. Some more food for thought; while it does appear that you are operating over gross, I feel like you’re compounding safety factors by running your calcs at full GVWR for both the truck and trailer. The likelihood of the truck and trailer being at GVWR at the same time seems low...but I acknowledge that your family might actually achieve this. If I were in your situation, I would go to the scales and run your loadout calcs based on actual weights (including tongue weight), and keep these calcs available in the event of an accident or inspection. Love your channel, keep up the fun content!

The sheets are incredibly helpful. Not only does it provide peace of mind, but by understanding more about the truck and its specs, you can see when it's possible to upgrade the components (such as gear ratio) vs upgrading the truck. Right now we have enough truck for what we're pulling by a few hundred pounds. If we wanted more trailer, we have the option to upgrade the axles before looking at a new truck. Good stuff.

Great job! Best explanation I've seen. When I've gotten into discussions on this topic my experience is that most are either unaware, or don't care about this issue of overweight towing. I believe there is a government sponsored study that suggests over half of the trucks pulling a trailer are technically overloaded. And, I believe many believe that adding air bags to level the truck mitigates this problem. IT DOES NOT. My experience is that the weight rating for the rear axle (and the resulting payload capacity) is the most limiting statistic to consider and the one most often ignored or misunderstood. There wold be more duallys out there if more people followed your analysis and stayed within the capacity guidelines of their tow vehicle. I would only add that I think the weight of a full tank of fuel must also be included in the payload total.

I had just done these numbers before I ordered my 2018 platinum f150 w Max Tow and decided to stay conventional trailer with my hensley. I didn’t have the heart to bring it up to you just after you got your beautiful new f250 - you may want to look into redistribution of the trailer payload to reduce your tongue weight it seems heavy for your trailer weight - also when you are using the weight distribution and weigh your completely loaded rig you may be surprised how much weight gets moved back to the trailer and off the tongue. Good Luck on your decision 😐

Right? 280 pounds over, 300 pounds of cargo... Why did you get a 28' travel trailer only to throw 300 pounds of cargo in the truck? The point of having a massive TT is so you can put ALL your stuff in it.
@tombrennan63126 жыл бұрын
Weight distribution hitches take load off the rear axle but reduce tongue weight. An overloaded receiver will still be overload using a WD hitch even though an overloaded rear axle may no longer be.
@glenf41155 жыл бұрын
@@tombrennan6312 Correct, the spring bars of a WD hitch ADD tongue weight to the hitch. They simply apply torque to the tow vehicle to push the front of the tow vehicle down if your headlights are pointed up into the sky.

One of the most important things I learned from them so far is to start with what you have! Thank you so much for that because I have been stressing about buying a one ton diesel and a fifth wheel and fitting that all in my budget when I already have a 2008 Tundra TRD 4X4 with the 5.7 engine. The light bulb came on when I heard you say that! Glad to see someone competently breaking it down. As a Weighmaster for Escapees SmartWeigh, I see all combinations of rigs. We weigh the tire weights, so the picture the customer gets is much more detailed and instructive than a simple truck scale plate. Tow vehicle GVWR plus Trailer GVWR of course must be less than or equal to tow vehicle GCWR, but even if it is, tires can be overloaded and tire pressure can be wrong, and weight distribution asymmetry is a big problem because trailer/coach manufacturers build a lifestyle vehicle first, and worry about weight distribution almost not at all.

A good thing to remember is that the hitch weight that is advertised is not the hitch weight when loaded. Usually runs between 10-15% of the trailer's loaded weight.

I wish I would have mentioned that too. I have draw the line somewhere. I wish I would have included more GAWR in my examples and went into tires, but payload is the key message here and the most misunderstood.

I was going to say that generally speaking on 5th wheels, the pin weight is about 20% and going from the GVWR of the 5th wheel, that's going to be quite a bit more on the pin weight than the one the manufacture gives. Overall though great job and I'll be sure to share this for people that don't understand these basic concepts.

In what way? One still has to stay within what the truck and trailer are rated for. There is nothing you can add or do to the truck to increase those numbers without having it re-certified and good luck with that. As mentioned the only numbers that count are the numbers on the labels. If you mean something else please explain.

Regarding no fines for non-commercial towing, I read otherwise in my research, but don't have first hand experience. A comment above said he got a ticket in OR for being over gross when he was pulled over for speeding. I think some states crack down. I think OR is one of them.
@kobra9976 жыл бұрын
Keep Your Daydream there is no state with penalties for non commercial overweight towing. Some states charge registration fees based on towing capacity. Some people are under reporting capacity for registration and then towing over. They chase them.
@Rws1111116 жыл бұрын
Yep, NC is one of those states. They don't seem to care if you are over GVWR or GCVWR. As long as your registration shows you paid the right tax, you could tow a house with a F150. BUT, it's the lawyers that will get you... not to mention the lives that are lost or changed forever if you are in an accident. That's what motivates me to stay within the limits.

Payload on the f150 was probably in the 1700lb range. He probably gained less than 500lb payload by going with the f250. So he was about 800lb over payload. My rule of thumb is anything over 6k pounds loaded is too much for 1/2 ton. Towing capacity number are irrelevant because you exceed payload first. Some people just cannot get this concept so i was glad to see this video.
@allan10626 жыл бұрын
Jeff Myers : My point exactly, I have a 2017 Dodge 1500 4x4 with 12 ply wranglers. I keep my payload limited to a generator, a small fishing punt on my canopy, a couple of lawn chairs and a full tank of fuel, topped off with the DW and myself. Then comes the tongue weight at 750lbs and I am loaded with a 10% buffer. The truck is done payload wise but I can still tow lots of weight. Trlr weighs 5800lbs loaded. GTWR is 7500lbs so I am way under. It would be really easy to overload my truck! And lots of people do...
@Prime19766 жыл бұрын
Jeff Myers you can buy a f150 right from the factory with a 3000 pound plus payload. It is a package option where they increase everything axle, springs etc. Not really a half ton anymore but the options are out there.
