This video is intended to give you an overview of the postgraduate course MSc Mathematics at The Open University. The way I see it, this video will give you a flavour of the course and how it works without being too overwhelming with the details.
Please note that module costs shown in the video are for UK students.

Thx for this video. I have a degree in CS and I’m considering starting the msc in mathematics, but I need to review a lot of math, given I don’t use it for quite some time.

That was useful to know. A link to the diagnostic quiz would be handier than to have to Google for it :-)

For a student in USA (California, Los Angeles), where can the local test center be when it comes to examination in MSc Mathematics at The Open University?

Thanks for the helpful info! I'm looking to apply to this but I'm not sure if I should go for this October or wait another year to revise properly. I finished my degree a few years ago and I'm finding myself even having to revise things like a level calculus as I'm trying to get on top of everything. Did you find the entry level modules started slowly? Would it be feasible to revise on the go or better to wait and be more prepared? Thanks
@DrWillWood

Hi, I think it's certainly possible to revise on the go! I took the calculus of variations entry module and the first month or so was mostly background and revision (solving differential equations etc). Come to think of it, every module I've done, up to mid November is basics and usually starts getting harder after that. I've also found that I never quite feel ready or as prepared as I thought I would be when starting each module!

Is there an application process, or do you just register & pay the fees?

As long as you have the entry requirements you just pay.

hello, I am very interested in enrolling in a degree in mathematics at the Open University. I wanted to know if there are video lessons on the topics for each course. Thanks for any reply.

Hi, that depends on the module. I'm assuming the undergraduate degree is similar to the master's course in that all modules have lectures given live over the internet (like a zoom call but the OU doesn't use zoom it seems). some modules have additional prerecorded video lectures that go into the concepts in detail with examples (alongside the standard live lectures). Because each module is run by a different person, and will have different numbers of students, it varies how much content you're given. Hope that helps!

@@DrWillWood thank you very much. For me it is important that there are video lessons for each topic (recorded or not, it is not important) because studying only from books is too tiring.

6 years seems a long time when at a bric uni its a year course, and 2 years part time. Why does it take so long? Can you not do 60 or 90 credits a year?

What about the quality of content and the level of it? Do you feel it’s good? Understanding that you are holding a PhD and your perspective could be really interesting. Regards!

My feeling is that the content is slightly easier than an equivalent masters at an in person uni, but there is probably more material over the 6 modules. Things are more spaced out in the self contained open uni modules whereas in person it's more intensive. There are a lot fewer lectures at open uni but that's part of the self directed learning ethos and keeps the price down I guess! Overall it is a really great course!
