I've just started a Bsc in psych at OU, I'm based in the UK. I enjoy it because I tend to do better when I study independently, without the daily social stress. I have to say that takes some getting used to, but that the OU are very supportive. The content available, the easy layout of the website, links to material and resources etc makes studying with them very easy. If you do fall behind, and you struggle, or you need special support, they are extremely accommodating. I would say though that it is a huge commitment, it takes alot of organisation and discipline to do distanced learning. Also if you thrive in social environments, this will be very hard for you as you really are independently learning (with the exception of collaborative forums). You have to be your own boss, and be good at keeping a balance, but if its something you really want to do, I don't doubt that you'll easily be able to figure out what works for you! Im studying 2 modules this year, DE100 and E102 and I found this video SO helpful. I'm finding my feet with the academic writing and layout of essays and it is a tad overwhelming! I'm feeling better now hearing from someone who has been there 😁

My advice for OU study: engage with the forums. OU can be a very lonely, dry experience, but you'll find incredible support if you're part of a gang of fellow students in the same tutor group, or studying the same module.

Hi Blaise, congrats for the REALLY helpful video, it's probably the best introduction to what it looks like studying Psychology with OU. I started last October with de102, and I must say that your helpful tips come at hand. I wanted to ask you, what's after the Bachelor degree for you? Did you pursue a Master with OU again or you chose a different path? I understand, that probably I'm running too fast, since I hadn't finished my degree yet, to ask about Masters. However, I'm curious if anyone has experience with a Master degree via OU to share his /her view on it. Thank you again for your helpful videos and good luck in your future career. 👍👍🤞

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you've found the video helpful :) I graduated from the OU in 2020, right towards the start of the pandemic so I've unfortunately been unable to continue on the study path because things are still a bit patchy for non-UK citizens like me! I've had to go about things very differently. If I were to give advice, I would say that if you're planning on furthering your studies/career in Psychology, don't pursue a master's with the OU because unfortunately, while their BSc programs ARE accredited by the BPS, their master's programs are not. I believe it's due to the BPS requiring training attached to the course and the OU can't provide that as a distance-learning institution.
@javer9706
@javer9706 2 жыл бұрын
@@blaiseonthevid That was really interesting information, I had no idea that Ou's masters are not accredited by the BPS. 😳 I guess you are right, it's preferable to take the master degree in a brick uni, obviously if someone wants to work in that area, some practice would be quite helpful. Thank you for your answers and sincerely I wish you the best with your further studies. You seem very smart and determined person and I'm sure you'll get what you're chasing professionally. :)

Thank you so much for this really helpful and inspiring video! I've just completed my first OU module toward BSc Hons Psychology with Counselling and will start DE100 in October. I'm already a qualified counsellor (roughly equivalent to a foundation degree I think). Interesting - and scary! - to hear that the only exam is for DE200, though I wonder how they arrange that for international students. I'm in the Netherlands.

Thank you so much for your comment! I'm so glad that this helped you 💚 I believe the OU has partner universities across Europe to hold the exams in and sometimes they are held in British Council branches. They'll give you all the details you need when you start DE200 though, so don't worry!

Thank you Blaise your beautiful explanations. I have two questions and hope you may help me to to get the answer: 1. Is UK Open University accredited ? 2.Is there graduation ceremoney ?
@blaiseonthevid
@blaiseonthevid 3 жыл бұрын
Hey William! Thank you for your kind comments. 1. I mentioned in the video that exams are necessary in the Psychology field in order for the OU to be accredited by the BPS - so yes it is! Most, if not all, their Bachelor's degrees are accredited by the respective associations :) 2. Yes! While currently graduation ceremonies are put on hold because of, well, what's happening, normally there would be various ceremonies across the year, held in various cities in the UK. I hope that answers your questions! :)

Hi Blaise, how many hours of study a week do I need to do for 120 credits in psychology? did you read other material outside of your course to get a first?
@blaiseonthevid
@blaiseonthevid 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for your questions! Firstly, the OU recommends students taking 120 credits in a study period to treat it as "full-time". So that means 30-40 hours of studying a week. Secondly, a lot of the OU assignments relies on materials taught within the course itself, though they do recommend bringing in at least ONE "outside source" (eg paper that wasn't shown to you) to use as evidence in your assignments. I personally took this advice to heart but whether it got me the first or not, I cannot say. It all comes down to how well you tackle your assignments
