That might’ve been a head hit. If you hit the pokey’s head, you kill it it one hit. Normally, you have to take it out one segment at a time, though.

There's actually one more variant of Pokey, that I'm aware of. From Bowser's Inside Story, they're called Toothy's and made entirely out of teeth. They attack by charging at you or spitting out a blue virus.
