I found it odd that Applejack would doubt the existence of the Great Seedling when she's seen a draconequis, a magic-stealing centaur, and a community of dragon-ponies. But once she explained her disappointment at not being able to catch it as a filly, it made a bit more sense.

Hearing your remarks on the lesson in this episode, I'm reminded of a quote by C.S. Lewis: "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” If that doesn't sum up this fandom, I don't know what does.

Honestly, I liked this episode, Dr. Wolf, especially for the flashback with seeing Pear Butter and Bright Mac again, so we know they were around after Apple Bloom was born, then presumably passed away some time after that, leaving Granny Smith to raise Big Mac, Applejack, and Apple Bloom on her own.

Granny aged A LOT in the last, what, 13 years? Or like 8 years, since she's looked that way since the beginning of the show. I'm wondering if that's just an example of cartoon aging, or if it's a result of having lost a child and a child-in-law. Interesting how the Great Seedling was never proven to be real at the end. And yeah, I love Applejack and this was a good AJ episode. She's responsible and hard-working, but she can let loose and have fun and play too. And she and Apple Bloom got to be cryptid-hunters together.

When I heard the synopsis for this episode I was kind of worried. Worried that we were going to get another sister bonding episode where the older sister doesn’t listen to the younger one, conflict based off lack of communication occurs, and the conflict features unnecessary arguments between the two siblings even though we know it won’t matter in the end. Thankfully, this episode throws all that aside and what I got was a sweet sister bonding episode where AJ finally learns a lesson she actually needed to learn

This episode fulfills the desire of every Apple Family Fan of the show: The entire 'core' Apple Family working together. Granny Smith, Ma and Pa Apple (Bright Mac and Pear Butter), Bigmac receiving a truly meaningful gift from Pa Apple, and (Finally) baby Apple Bloom using an apple as a pacifier. The cuteness levels were incredibly high on the chart, probably only second to Fluttershy in the last episode.

I got the impression that Big Mac's sleepwalking (sleepbucking?) was one of the well-known side-effects of Lunesta or Ambien, where you do things during sleep, and don't remember any of it in the morning. Then AJ was having a protracted 'Nam flashback, setting up traps in the closest thing analogous to a Southeast-Asian jungle; was anybody else surprised there weren't punji sticks at the bottom of that pit? Yeah yeah, it's a kid's show, and I'm exaggerating a bit. This was a fun Apple family episode to watch. :)

The scenes with their parents caught me off guard. I mean, when the flashback began I _hoped_ they'd be seen in it, interacting with their children in some way but even still, it somehow caught me off guard. I guess that given the previous flashbacks we've had of the Apples this far, never showing their parents, I was at the same time expecting they wouldn't be present on this one, either. It made me feel like crying. I almost shed a manly tear when I saw them. I couldn't help but express a very large smile upon seeing Bright Mac and Pear Butter next to little Big Mac and Applejack. That hit me right in the feels. In a good way, of course, but it did. :')

I loved this episode. For many reasons, not the least of which is that it put to bed a very dark fan theory that Applebloom is actually AJ's daughter and not her sister. That they told her she's AJ's sister because she was an accidental pregnancy and AJ wasn't ready to be a mom. It also showed where Big Mac got his neck... thing... god I forget what it's called, and it was indeed from his pops bless his soul. Nice touch that AJ doesn't have her cutiemark yet since she doesn't get that until (presumably) after her parents are passed away. Strengthens the fan theory that AJ rejected the farm life as a coping mechanism for the grief of losing her parents. She went to aunt and uncle orange because they filled in as parent figures which is what she was craving. I was really hoping that it was going to turn out Big Mac was consciously setting up the great seedling stuff, even though he was tired, even though he knew it would make even more work for him, because he liked seeing his little sister acting like a kid. Kinda like how an exhausted parent still makes time to drink half the glass of milk, and bite the cookies so the little kid will believe in santa one more year. It would have been a cute way to show how much he loves his sister. A nice follow up to brotherhooves social. I think subconsciously that IS what he was doing, which is why the get up. I find it a little funny that the great seedling looks a little like Thorax, I wonder if a long time ago changelings looked like that, and went around spreading fertilizer in people's orchards to improve their crops so they could feed on the ponies love and appreciation. Then the ponies started to just expect them to show up and stopped having proper appreciation, so the changelings changed forms due to bitterness from being taken advantage of. So the great seedling became a legend because there were people that remembered this big deer like thing that brought plentiful harvests from when they were children but were too young to know about the fallout of why it stopped coming around. Headcannons are fun.

I feel so many adults need to learn this lesson. Especially in the education system. Most of the time when you see a kid try to take in art for their future because they have a bunch of whimsy and creativity; the teachers and even parents try to snuff that out and tell them to grow up. That's why I barely payed attention in school because I knew they were full of bullcrap. Yes, you are becoming an adult, but that doesn't mean you should give up your childhood at age TEN. Well I'm 23 and I still watch cartoons, I play video games most of my time (mostly ratted M games so I guess it's more adult), and I love to draw. But I still have responsibilities like buying my own food, having a good hygiene, and using money responsibly. I'm not giving up my childhood memories and creativity and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

This fixes the timeline for the Apple parents time of death Remember when Granny Smith said that the whole family was in the episode? Maybe there’s a reason why the parents weren’t there, either they are dead or they are in there for a reason. We now know that they weren’t somewhere “making” Applebloom. Applebloom was probably a sickly baby, or the parents were there for a medical reason and had Applebloom with them.

C.S. Lewis said this once, and I quote: "Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being an adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

There are som many potential Applejack ideas we never got to see: AJ teaching Twi how to embrace the 1/3 earth pony in her as an Allicorn and possibly learning more about Earth Pony Magic (She's more like Twi's second-in-command and confidant when she has panic attacks and needs to be calmed down, not to mention having saved Twi's life multiple times in the show and being the first in showing interest whilst the others weren't in Twi's interests whilst vice-verca Twi can counter AJ's troubling stubborness (TWIJACK!!!XD)), dealing with the fear of being alone (Granny isn't getting older, Apple Bloom is traveling Equestria as a crusader, Big Mac might leave to be with Sugarbelle and start his own family, and the rest of the Mane 6 have their own dreams ... it has been shown that AJ's greatest fear was that her friendships would one day end), the fate of AJ's parents (It'd be interesting if Chrysalis was responsible: stealing their love and leaving them as dried husks, or their love being so pure Chrysalis cocooned them as a private stash to use sparingly thus resulting in them being saved in the end), her plans in the end (in the IDW comics it's revealed that Mayor Mare has been grooming AJ to take her place as Mayor of Ponyville should she choose - and given Twi's new position as ruler it would enable her to remain in touch as co-leaders.), Winona getting pregnant and having pups of her own. Part of me wishes the Gen 5 is actually a hoax and Hasbro intends to have G4 age into a new generation: older crusaders, cake twins, and Flurry Heart ... with the Mane 6 as the mentors (kinda like those 2-year skips in One Piece and Naruto Shippuden). XD

@@Secret_Moon Bad? Why? (Also I wouldn't consider The Washouts a classic. I felt it was a bit lame)
@Secret_Moon5 жыл бұрын
@@thejazmaster5292 Because just like last week episode, it teaches a very bad lesson to kids. Instead of teaching them to be responsible and have good work ethic, it is telling them it's fine to neglect their work and just play around. It's not ok to throw work aside to just have fun like that, especially when they are having fun at the expense of others. The episode goes in the right direction during the first half, with AJ criticizing AB for fooling around and not helping her family, but then gave compromise and promised to help with her hunting if she helped with work. It gives a good bonding between the sisters while still emphasizes on the importance of work. But then the episode turns upside down its head when the writers made AJ suddenly become childish (yes, childish, not childlike) and obsess with the hunting herself, abandoning all her work, the very thing she criticized AB for and had learned herself a hard lesson in the past. And because of that, Big Mac was forced to work to exhaustion, not to mention hurting himself with all the traps around. If the writers thinks of it as a joke, it's not funny. What do they expect children to learn from this? That it's fine for them to just play around and have fun and don't care when their parents are exhausted with work and need their help? I am not against having fun, but as AJ said in the very beginning of the episode: there is time for fun, and there is time for work. I had expected that AJ was the one who worked overtime at night because she wanted AB to be carefree and also so that she could have time for playing and bonding with her sister. It would have made a touching moment when AB found out about it. But no, she simply just fooled around and had fun with herself without caring a damn thing about work and her exhausted and sleep deprived brother. I don't even know how people can watch this episode and say it's good.
@thejazmaster52925 жыл бұрын
@@Secret_Moon Well, AJ isn't perfect, and she went after the Seedling in order to relive her childhood, and while I do agree that she abandoned work and Big Mac got way too abused by the episode, I think it's also important that she stayed in touch with her inner child, as adults often forget to do. But I do see what you mean. Why don't you like the last episode though?
@Secret_Moon5 жыл бұрын
@@thejazmaster5292 I am not against AJ having childhood fun, I actually like the idea. But "throwing necessary work aside to have fun on your own despite others working their ass off" is not a lesson you want to teach kids. Like AJ said it herself, there is time for fun and there is time for work. In fact, as I mentioned, the story could have let AJ work at night to save time for having fun with her sister. It would have made a much more touching and compelling story and still tackled the idea of AJ having childhood fun with her sister while also taught kids to be responsible with work. As for the last episode, I already discussed it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIq6nnp_i9mXoac&lc=UgzmE1jBb3sKcg706VZ4AaABAg.8vNBhfsXKwR8vNsg526PqR and here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIq6nnp_i9mXoac&lc=UgzmE1jBb3sKcg706VZ4AaABAg.8vNBhfsXKwR8vOzrQp94hE Just copy and paste the link in address bar. Personally this is another win for Season 9 for me. I'd compare it to the episode with Quibble Pants. In that both episodes were ultimately predicatable but also managed to have small things that really elevated the episode for me. I was certain the whole episode would be AJ remaining skeptical while Bloom would be lazy but neither of those things happened. And for me this episode is the first episode for me AJ and Bloom felt like sisters in the positive way than a negative way (not to say siblings don't snap at each other or something but I feel we've seen sooooooo much of that). Plus its just nice to see AJ just so happy. I can't remember the last time she has felt so genuinely excited to do something. This episode had many pitfalls but managed to avoid all of them. And even it being predictable isn't enough to make me think any less of it. I give it a 8 out of 10. Its not the most amazing note to end on but I'm satisfied if this is the last episode of the apple family (though I would want to see Big Mac do something else this season I'd be fine if he didn't since last season had his best showing for me).

Is Hasbro giving an approving nod to the non demographic fans here, maybe? All the while letting the demographic know they don't have to lose hope. Adults are like ogres, they come in layers. And Apple Bloom with her mother and her father in the background rules out all the tragic stories about dying in childbirth. I have a sneaking suspicion Hasbro is never going to actually tell us what happened to the parents, and y'know? Maybe that's the best way to end all the Apple arcs.

I sorta did a bit of math to figure out some things in the episode. AJ said that the planning for this harvest was a hundred moons in the making. That would be eight and a half years, from there and the flash back we can assume that AJ is 16 and started planning when she was eight. After she fell into her own trap. A complaint I had was that this interfered with the Apple Family timeline until I saw AJ's parents. They're still alive when she's eight years old. However AB is a baby, so I assumed that she's 6 years younger than AJ making her two years old at the time. From all of this we can assume that within those 8 years her parents died, which would explain why AB has so few memories of them.
