So glad you were smart enough to do this the best way with the wet pour. And you made it thick enough to stand up well. Some rebar or even hog fence would have made it even stronger. Even hippies in the woods can do it right! Good job!

Just found your channel. Started to binge watch and saw some people raggin' on Missouri and didnt know that's where you all are. Normally channels are somewhere else. I've lived in Colorado, Wisconsin, Florida, Japan, Korea, Hawaii, and Oklahoma and chose Missouri to live in our forever home. I like the season and the transitions between four seasons. 74 degrees every single day I was in Hawaii started to feel like groundhog day to me. I've been checking out dry pour concrete and Country Cajun Livin channel is blowing up right now with their dry pour video two weeks ago that has over 3.7 MILLION views, but I see you all done it first. I think the concrete YT search path is how I found your channel. Welcome to Missouri, hope you are successful at everything.

Hi yall, I just saw your episode 100 (after watching 1 till 99) and you were unpacking the box with gifts from your mom. You showed the stroopwafels and what we do in the Netherlands is make a nice cup of coffee and put a stroopwafel on top of your cup for 1 to 2 minutes. The stroopwafel will be warmed up and it tastes so much better. If you want some stroopwafel from the Netherlnds, please let me know and we can send you some. Kind regards and keep on filming. Roland

The dry pour looks so much easier and less time, even if you had to redo it every 8-10 years, still worth it. Not that it's best for everything, certainly not for a driveway, but for a large percentage of slabs needed by homeowners, smaller ones, dry pour is a great option. And I prefer a surface that isn't so smooth... smooth concrete is slippery. Anyone who's ever slipped and fallen on wet concrete can attest-- there is little benefit to a smooth concrete surface. Just a little bit of roughness like the dry pour is all you need.
@jammcguire1276

And the dry pour creates less waste as you only use exactly what you need, have minimal cleanup and no random leftovers.
@Hansen710
@Hansen710 Жыл бұрын
@@jammcguire1276 why would you mix more then you need 🤯 no matter what you still buy the same amount, and it is not a co2 neutral product i do think you use more when dry, the water also takes up place.. and this is one of the most co2 producing building materials posible to find. specially if you dont use the product for more the a couple of years
@Hansen710
@Hansen710 Жыл бұрын
are you serius, this is 2023 this is not co2 neutral, it is actually a big problem concrete.. and you just want to make new slabs every 8-10 year when the product can last hundreds of years if mixed correct, also outside.. roman concrete with lime in it, or german bunkers from the war are still standing
@isabellavision
@isabellavision Жыл бұрын
@@Hansen710 I am serious; I always use proper wet mix when I do my Roman concrete and build German bunkers. I was responding to the speculation that dry poured slabs won't last as long, which I don't think anyone knows for sure. I thought that would be clear by prefacing the sentence with "Even if..." I don't think anyone 'wants' to make new slabs every 8-10 years. But if you're going to count CO2, don't miss the waste generated by huge mixing trucks and even medium sized mixers. Because you have such a short time to pour and finish the slab before it starts to harden, they always mix more than they need, and anywhere from a small amount to a huge amount goes to waste. Add to that the combustable fuels used by the trucks or to generate the electricity used by the mixers, and it really isn't worth the speculation of how much more environmental damage might be caused by a dry pour slab which *might* not last as long as a wet mix slab. Way too many unknown variables.

A very well put together video and a great comparison. Only because Cody says he is a perfectionist, I can give a couple tips on the wet pour. First your mix was a little dry which makes smoothing the surface and edges way more work. Its probably a cup or so more water per bag, but if the concrete wont pour out of the mixer it’s tight for finish work. 2nd if you run the vibe along the edge of the forms it will clean up those exposed stones you were commenting about. If you don’t have a vibe, tapping on the form with hammer will pull cream against the form and greatly improve the smoothness of the sides .
@CantContainUs

Thanks for the tips! I definitely thought it was a little too dry at the end.
@Hansen710

@@CantContainUs there is a time scedule for mixing concrete if you want the strength of the product to much or to little gives pretty much no psi like a dry pour so if you are looking for perfect bring out the stop watch. if things are being tested the rules of concrete should be followed..

I never had a vibrator, so go along the forms with a 1x2 board up and down to push the stones back and let sand w/ cement flow up against the forms. Before that, I stomp around in rubber boots to help pack it in everywhere tight and force out air pockets. Don't screed the top until you've settled it tight everywhere.
@gordthor5351

Andrew R No, it's not to dry. Too much water makes concrete weaker and you have to wait much longer to finish it. Each barrel seemed consistent, so I'm sure Cody followed the recommended amount in the directions. It's nice to have a bull float to push the rocks down and bring the cream to the top. A 2x4 works fine on a small slab, but it looked like Cody could have scrubbed it a bit harder to speed up the process.
@andrewr2650
@andrewr2650 Жыл бұрын
@Gord Thor yes i agree dryer is stronger, but there is also a balance with workability. Im not saying make it the consistency of pea soup, that would be a bad idea. Adding a touch more water so it would come out of the mixer isn’t going to cause the slab to fail. the pro's do flatwork with crete that is in the 5-7 slump range, and that was maybe a 3.

Looking good! Just a suggestion for both a dry pour and wet pour, use a wood sealer (deck sealer?) o the inside of the wooden frame! Separates more easily…because concrete drying pulls moisture out of the wood…dry pour pulls more in order to cure it and bonds to the unsealed wood like glue!😎👍

When I had a mixer, I would have sand and gravel delivered in bulk, and 90 lb bags of Portland cement since cheaper than the premixed bags. After each pour, I would shovel in the gravel for the next batch and water, then run the mixer to clean the blades until ready to add sand and cement. Generally used 1 part cement to 3 parts sand, and 5 parts gravel, as I recall, but depends on size of the gravel and whether broken granite or smooth river stones (better). More cement makes it stronger. I used the mixer to pour footings for an addition and garage and to fill the cores of concrete block where it was below grade (w/ rebar in cores and Sure-wall between blocks). For the garage slab, I ordered a premixed concrete truck since no time to mix that much by hand and work it, even on a cold winter day. Smart to have a small side project ready to pour for left-overs in the truck, plus a few bags on hand to finish those off or if your slab runs short. Otherwise, they return it to the plant and probably pour concrete barriers and such, though some will charge for left-over concrete. For final cleanup, it is nice to have somewhere like a gravel drive where you can pour the watery waste. It will sink in and help bond the gravel. I wouldn't touch the concrete with bare hands and feet since it will flake your skin. Even with gloves, wash your hands often with water.

I don’t know if you’ve sealed the dry pour by the stairs but if not, that mat sitting on there collecting moisture might eventually contribute to the top layer of concrete to start flaking off. It’s a small pour and a 10-15 minute job every 2 years or so will likely double the lifespan. Someone painted my concrete deck before I bought my house and the paint trapped moisture in the concrete and it took about 3 years and the deck became virtually unusable.

You don't need a vibrator to pour a slab, but it is better and easier if you do have one (as long as you don't over vibrate it). The concrete will be stronger, and finishing will be easier. As long as you don't over vibrate it. For instance, it would only take 5-10 seconds to properly vibrate that size of slab. Also, don't waste your time and money on dry pours. Everything about them are the worst things you can do to make concrete at it's absolute worst. Weak, spalling surface, ugly, can't get a nice clean edge and simply won't last, because it is crumbly sh!t concrete that was never meant to be poured any other than wet and mixed. It's a big no no to rewet the surface when concrete has already started to set up (the surface will spall off) and dry pours are all about several layers of dry bonds, which are weak AF. The cement (the glue) will never bond well to the aggregate in a dry pour and that is where the strength comes from. If you break a slab of real concrete the rocks will break at the fracture line, taking much more force to do so than pulled the rocks out of the weak bond cement as dry pours do when fractured.

Cody, you did a good job for the way you did it. A couple of simple things I see that may help with finish seeing you said you’re kinda a perfectionist. Finish could be much better if you tamp the top of the concrete a little and use a mag trowel to get more fine mud at the top 1/2” or so. Many ski people skip this and rely too much on just screeding with a 2 x 4. That’s good but add the other 2 steps and you will be amazed. Also wait longer to do the corner edging until it just starts to set up. Then dip your edger in a bucket of water to give it a really smooth edge. If it’s too wet it will have a tendency to give it a wood grain type texture. Also, I may as that the dry pour finish could be better by doing some of the same things mentioned before water, Then light mist! Wait an hour, maybe another light must (not wet). After that shower it with water as you did. Concrete will wick the moisture even when there’s a hard shell on top. But like I said, it’s for the perfectionist. Finish is what you see, so if someone likes the more porous finish that’s ok too. Good job guys!😁

Seriously, 18:12 about the bunny ,"that was real fun to watch ? ". Can you please *do without the cheers* for killing stuff. Just seems really demented. What say you ? btw, I have 6 cats and 1 other that is a total outside cat and feral. It was a nice video to watch almost to the end and then have to deal with something quite wicked - really spoils everything that came before and pulls me totally off the topic. When did we ever learn its cool to see the killing of creatures. "I just dont understand it !" Its surprises like that in a video, or gotcha's that I cant SUBSCRIBE to or recommend others with kids to watch. (just a bit of food for thought)

Does it not make sense that a person thinking that using containers for building a home, would also think of this as a novel and better way to pour concrete? As for the vibrator, they might be great for some things, but they certainly arent necessary for pouring a concrete slab. But hey, if you can somehow get a million subscribers, you could move into a real house.

That’s a very rude way to say that. You must not watch their videos otherwise you’d know they literally get trees off the property and mill all of the wood they use on projects. Quite an impressive way that takes some time.
