Really enjoy your explanations how and why you are doing these jobs on the boat. I am new to your channel and find the content amazing. My family was in the offshore service industry in the Gulf of Mexico in the 70’s and 80’s where we customized some boats for sandblasting and painting the oil and gas rigs offshore. I was watching one of the older episodes about installing brackets for what you called the “hot water cylinder” and it reminded me of when one of ours failed. We sent our electrician to the local big box hardware store to pick up one and meet the boat at the dock four hours away. When he met the boat and started to unload it they noticed it was natural gas and not electric. The skipper without batting an eye, simply asked the electrician if he remembered to get a really long gas line. Turned out to be a really long night for the electrician. One of the lessons we learned very quickly was that in the salty atmosphere everything corrodes. You are making good choices choosing readily available appliances etc., (like your residential hot water cylinder.) In the USA we call them “Hot Water Heaters” (I know if the water is hot, why heat it? Right) Appliances like these only last for a couple of seasons, so make them easy to replace. The boat looks great, really like the “wings”. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

It’s really funny you think a 40hr/week desk job takes more time. Dame here, I used to work a 40hr desk job, and build the boat, and help Jess edit every week and look after a very unwell wife. All up both of us would work maybe 90hrs/wk each. Recently I’ve been able to drop my employment but not really the hours. We each still work 50-60hrs a week. For every minute of KZbin footage is normally around 2hrs of raw footage and another 1-1.5hrs of editing time. In fact two days ago I worked from sun up to sun down on the boat and managed 4mins of episode worthy footage. To assume a forty hour week is more than what we put in is cute, but not even close to reality. Dame

I also have a son who is in his 3rd year as a welding apprentice, he works on boats, I get the effort you and Jess put in. I thought mentioning public service jobs and the fact I captain a desk would have been enough of a hint, not to mention that each video obviously spans a couple of days. You've got a fantastic sense of humor which may have influenced my attempt at the same. I guess I gotta buy something from your shop by way of apology cause I can't shout you a beer from here. Dual shield is the way to go we use it a lot at work, don’t want to sound like a know it all but here we go. You can run a lot less wire speed with dual shield especially on the vertical ups and should be on at least 25 volts . Anyways that is a lot of work and you do such an awesome job !
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 2 жыл бұрын
Huh, I didn’t know about that level of voltage. I’ve been much lower than that. Normally run 22 for 6mm but on these ups I was bouncing between 19-20. Thanks I will have a play with this wire on some scrap and see how I go with higher bolts and less wire

In my opinion, having welded a thing or two, it would have been preferable to do an interrupted weld around that plate. It reduces warpage and stress in the adjacent structure. Looks good! The keel post is much thicker material and will require higher amperage, weld stacking is a good sign of not enough heat in the weld.

Pad welding is the best solution. It's also the simplest. You clean up, you weld, you move on. You can patch over, there's chemicals you can lather both sides of the hidden area that are heat resistant and prevent rust, but for a single patch in a single corner, it's cost prohibitive. Another method i've seen is to weld four bolts head into the wall, cut a plate of an appropriate size and then you put rubber on both sides along with heaps of paint. Over the top of that you use straps to force the plate into the bolts. This is a temporary fix, but it works. I have heard of people using underwater welding to patch holes using this method. Haven't seen it.

Since relying on a lack of oxygen in the bow compartment failed and it rusted so badly a very expensive and time consuming repair job was needed, Would slathering the new metal in rust converter help prevent any future major rust problems, or would the follow up welds just burn it off? As to the wind issue, how about tacking 'huge' dogs (30 x 120 cm plates) to either side of the weld zone about 60 cm apart. Might involve a bit of grinding and spot welding, but it should provide a 'dead zone' to weld in when those gentle 40 kph Aussie breezes waft in to ruffle your salon hair-do...

Once the front is all welded up is it possible to mist spray the entire inside with waxoyl or a protective coating to prevent future corrosion
@damon1588
@damon1588 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know this boat much, but if the front is air tight as the steel rust the oxygen is consumed. So at some point there will be no oxygen left to oxidize the steel.

A wash down with chain saw bar oil would protect the metal for next to zero costs. It soaks under a huge rust and leave a protective layer. Over time it lasts longer than Waxoyl.

back on the tools :) and heap of vid editing as well, which i must say is awesome ! . quick question from a numpty lol, and prob has been answered before, aside from no slag, why mig not arc ? ( always used arc for thicker material, probably has to do with mindset that mig wire is si thin lol. ) counting down the days till launch, well deserved guys when that day arrives !
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 2 жыл бұрын
MIG is just as capable of doing steel up to say an inch thick. Just like a 3.2mm rod you might need a few passes but it will still achieve great penetration. That said MIG is generally used in a production environment or where you have a metric shit ton of welding because it’s just so much faster than stick. That said stick is much better in wind versus any shielding gas welding. All of this needs to be tempered with my pathological hatred of stick welding hence I will MIG in a snow storm before I attempt stick

@@ProjectBrupeg Def wont need to do more than 6mm for around the home so is good to know :) one last question,( and i really appreciate the time you take to answer) Dame/Jess , looking for a spool gun, what amp would suit my 182 ? @ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 2 жыл бұрын
I would think so. Have a look at the amp chart in the door for alloy. That will tell you amps for a given alloy thickness. 150 sounds about right but the door chart will confirm it. You can actually to alloy with the standard MIG torch if you change to U groove rollers. It’s much more painful than a spool gun but it’s still possible.

@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Buck, all up it was a few days but that’s because I was stop starting g for things like wind or wire replacement etc. start to finish there was maybe 5hrs of welding in it as I was grinding anything I wasn’t absolutely happy with. Any time the wind blew my gas away to the point I was getting porosity would be a stop and grind out then restart, finally when I had finished I went over it with TIG so I could clean up any areas where I thought the fusion was a little low. Normally the pros would let do this level as they are better welders than me but what I lack in skill I make up for in determination to make sure it’s as good as their finished product (just slower because of rework)

"Double shielded" in this context means you've got both gas and wire flux, right? Great progress! Gonna fill that space with closed cell foam for buoyancy, or just leave it open?
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ted. Yes dual shield is a flux wire that still needs a gas. Sometimes it’s called hard facing wire but it’s quite common in the shipyard due to wind

You should be happy I am not your age. You'd be having to use a flog to drive me away from doing whatever I could to help that boat. I know that that is a massive amount of sweat and blood just getting that bit done on the front. I have never done more than soldering and repairing secret circuits in huge ground surveillance radars in my youth so I would be more of an anchor and terrible butler but I would be johnny on the spot everywhere trying to help. No ambition to go to sea because I am a veteran seasickness patient but I'd love to see you get Brupeg in the water..

thanks for addressing security! its good to know that you have a team and i hope they are extremely knowledgeable in the field. type kali linux into youtube search and prepare to be somewhat uncomfortable. if its less than 14 characters long and dosnt have caps symbols and numbers for a character set of around 120 any password can be brute forced so dont make it easy. thanks for the videos and add ssd storage to your amazon wishlst lol i truly do not believe mechanical hard drives are going to survive shock loads seen during mother natures tantrums on water...

One of my pet peeves is how the insurance companys dictate how things are done, even when there are no other laws or regulations to follow. I'm surprised that you can get insurance without them wanting to see your professional welder certificates and asking untold number of questions regarding all the content you've shown on the internet. This ship is more likely to sink from an encounter with a prehistoric giant sea monster than from one of your welds going bad!!
