Something incredibly timeless and satisfying watching this. In this mad hectic modern world it’s all nonsense really and just old crafts in nature is what the soil needs. Really informative, I’m a landscaper normally patios and fencing and have just started a small dry stone wall repair on a job so much appreciated!

Spot on. Did some walling today with DSWA, new in to this. Then searched then this popped up. Great walling there, in my own opinion. Better then mine today. Those Stones looked good to wall with...natural craftsman. If you need a hand, let me know :)

Interesting stuff. I live in N Italy, and in the Alps there is a lot of stone construction. I watched a video about fixing walls and the builder said to use smaller stones at lower points as the weight of larger stones above will hold them in place. I tend to think that those stones are thinner, more flat and squared off than these, so one has to work with local knowledge. One benefit of gentrification is that people with a ton of money are coming in and restoring the old buildings and walls. It is shocking to see the level of masonry coming from subsistence farmers from 1-400 years ago!

Awesome job well done , I learnt a lot thanks for sharing your master stone walking skills. If your stones are a lot rounder stones do split them or just face them off a little. Cheers love the videos, thanks 🙏 jim
@DryStoneTom
@DryStoneTom Жыл бұрын
You can split stones but it’s a lot of work so it really depends on the finish you want. You can walk round stone you just need to during the string line to the front of the stone and let the stone sit on its widest point. It will look like the stones can rock forward but once there all locked in then it will be fine 😊

Man, this shit is so beautiful. The facet of this being pretty much permanent elevates the art to a crazy degree. Would you take a free apprentice for a month a year for the foreseeable future and then for a few times a year after about a decade?

Cracking vid Tom. I'm definitely going to give your method a go on my next big gap. How do you know your batter is the same both sides without using a frame? Is it just experience that teaches you that?

Great! Do you think the little culvert caused the collapse of the old wall? It might have eroded the supporting soil underneath the wall.

I have a 180 foot dry stone wall , in the extreme dry weather 2 large sections fell down 2 days apart , the wall is built on bank ( not my side) it’s a retaining wall to my property. Around another 3 sections look like they are also ready to fall. I’m convinced it’s down to ground subsidence due to the extreme dry weather we had for weeks. Could this be possible and how can I prove it ? Any advice would be most helpful. I’m guessing the wall has been there over 100 years , The house was built new build in 2004.
