I'd suggest starting from the first one and moving up. These are awesome little known games. I still have my Disks, one with the trilogy, and preordered alread. I probably have 2,000+/- hours in them and never completed any of them due to having so much fun adventuring and exploring. I spend a lot of time gaming. I have over 30K Hrs in DDDA.

Minor nitpick, it wasn't radiation that made the reactor 4 concrete top to blow off. It was the insane amount of steam pressure contained in the reactor itself from the fission going critical releasing high amounts of energy, which made more steam. The process of nuclear power is kinda like the steam engine: heat from the fire produces steam from water, which in turn moves the pistons to create energy. In a reactor, we have the same principle, instead of the fire, we have the nuclear material undergoing fission, which releases the energy needed to heat the water.

Critical in a nuclear reactor means it is producing enough neutron flux to sustain the reaction. It wasn’t that the reactor went critical that led to the explosion. They had a run away supercritical spike due to a number of factors. The Chernobyl HBO series does a good job of explaining this in the courtroom scene.

Here's what you need to know (according to chat GPT). We are in the middle of the cold war - and the Russian goverment wants to conduct experiments on humans to see if they could eliminate humanity's destructive tendencies. This ambition was rooted in the Cold War-era fear of nuclear annihilation and global instability, where controlling human behavior seemed like a solution to prevent self-destruction. So, the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone seemed like a good area for this secret opperation by the goverment (secret Soviet project knows as Common-Consciousness) because it was a remote, heavily restricted area with minimal civilian access due to the 1986 nuclear disaster. Additionally, the Chornobyl disaster had already created an environment of intense radiation and scientific anomalies (byproduct of the failed experiments conducted by the C-Consciousness), which the researchers likely saw as an opportunity to study and manipulate the effects for their project. The Zone's desolation and strange phenomena provided a natural "testing ground" for their ambitious but ethically dubious goals. You play as the "Marked One," a stalker with amnesia sent to kill Strelok, a mysterious figure. Over time, you discover that the Zone is tied to the C-Consciousness project, and you were once a member of Strelok’s group trying to uncover its secrets.

The original games were based off a book called Roadside Picnic, in which aliens visit earth and turn it into a dumpster with artifacts and anomalies. Stalkers are basically illegal hunters that venture into the zones to find these artifacts. The games were basically the same plot (except the aliens are now the government) with obviously a lot more added content, but they kept the bolt throwing option to find invisible zones that could kill you in seconds, one of many small details. Great book and great series of games. Glad they made it through the war to produce the new game for fans. RIP to the developer Vladimir "Fresh" Yezhov, he died during the Battle of Bakhmut in 2022 defending Ukraine.

Short version: my download went much faster than usual, so hope that's a sign that the servers are good. Director's Cut: I started my download on Xbox, yesterday from my phone evening. Often I can't get on Day One gameplay if GamePass doesn't have cloud set up if I don't start a download ahead of time. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was ready when I went to check how much longer it would take. I hope that same sort of thing is the case for anyone else looking to play.

It's a shame they don't follow the story from the movie in a way. You explore the zone while the professor and the writer wait at bigger hub areas. They give you missions, and you progress further into the zone while doubting their intentions. You could also gather information about them when meeting older stalkers while roaming the zone. It's still an awesome game for someone who loves Stalker, but wait a year until they fix and add stuff if you're new to the game.

Stalker has never been an acronym, at most it is an English language backronym. Stalker means сталкер, which is just the Russian transliteration of the English word and was the name of the Tarkovsky movie, probably because it sounded cool. But maybe in the game universe they made it that way to appeal more to the mass public, kind of like the SPECIAL system in Fallout. Backronyms always sound cool.

It needs a few updates especially when it comes to aiming. The amount the reticle jumps about when your trying to line up a headshot ruins the game if im honest.

Stalker is getting a 0/10 from me until they fix these stupid issues. Stick drift on controllers is absolutely ridiculous. A mere mortal taking 10 shots to the chest and still surviving. Graphical errors up the ass. Settings not saving even though you saved it. Game is dark as shit for no reason. All these years and this is what they can come up with? Disgraceful.
