Two of my favorite ladies! I’ve worked all day on my pantry inventory! Freezers sorted and organized!🙌🏻. My arthritis hands are frozen!😩 Pantry-extended and preps/ canned- store bought -dehydrated Now I need to better organize my lists Also Ive had both dehydrators going with spinach and kale! Loved your idea to make greens powder to “sneak” into food for my veggie haters🤪

Hello Darcy, I just finished watching the replay and ordered your Dehydrating Basics E-book. Will be taking it to Staples to print out a copy and bind it like you did yours - great idea. I am so sorry I was not available to be part of the live chat. You are so knowledgeable and such a great teacher...thanks for all you share with us. Many of my own thoughts (that I hadn't put into questions) were touched upon - like how long can you keep adding to a jar to fill it up. ...that was a great question and so glad it was asked. Also leave veggies/fruits in whole form til you are needing to use them powdered. Happy New Year Darcy - stay well! Look forward to what you'll be teaching us in 2021! ~ Gail/NH

Darcy, had a chance to watch your live chat. You did an awesome job. I do hope that you will do another one soon. I have learned so much in December. Thank you for the tips that I got tonight. I have not turned on my dehydrator for a week or so. Will be filling it on Saturday and getting it started.

Seals for plastic mason jar caps..... Save undamaged canning jar lids and reuse them with plastic mason jar caps. Place a lid on the jar, then screw on the plastic cap. (Or, place the lid inside the plastic cap, with top lid touching top of cap, and then screw onto the jar.) Gasket material in the metal canning lid will form a seal for better storage than a plain white plastic cap, like the Mainstay version at Walmart. Using new metal lids may be more economical than buying silicone rings. I haven't checked the unit pricing. BTW, Ball is now selling a black plastic lid leak-proof screw cap for mason jars. They have a built in gasket. Depending on available budget, these may be a good option in certain situations.

My favorite thing about this video was learning that vegetables will rehydrate to the same state in which they were in before dehydrating them. So, if they were uncooked before dehydration, they may still be a little hard afterwards. Thank you, darcy, for reminding us that they might still need to be cooked. 👍

My favorite item to dehydrate (there's several really) but I'm going to choose shredded potatoes for hash browns. My least favorite has been mushrooms - not that I don't like them, I just don't reach for them too often, they take a long time to rehydrate and I often don't plan enough in advance (another 2021 goal! - LOL) ....I'll stick with fresh on the occasion of cooking with them. My 2021 dehydrating goal is to do larger batches of our favorites to stack the pantry and to make soups in a jar for quick meals.

Gail, I can't rave on mushroom powder enough. It's one of our favorites. Half of the family isn't fond of rehydrated mushrooms, but powder is gold...and is used in most savory dishes that we make.

I've got dozens of glass mayo & want to use them for dehydrated food storage. Any tips, or do they work like canning jars?
@ThePurposefulPantry
@ThePurposefulPantry 3 жыл бұрын
As long as they are airtight, they will be fine for storage. They won't vacuum seal like mason jars, but they are fine on their own if the lid is airtight.
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are great for dry food storage! I have a bunch of them, as well. The ones I have will accept canning jar lids and rings, I don't use them for wet canning. Risk of a jar breaking is too high, especially when canning expensive meat. Some meats sell for more per pound than a case of quart and especially pint jars will cost. If yours accept mason jar lids, and you need lids, plastic lids, like the white Mainstays lids from Walmart will work. You can try vacuum sealing if you have a FoodSaver jar sealer. Because the glass in these is usually thinner, you may not get a seal on all of your jars. If one doesn't vac seal, try another one. That's the difference between wet & dry canning. With dry, easy to swap lids and try again. Not easy with wet canning by comparison.
