Mama is right, there is something fulfilling about restoring your own saddle. Each of my 3 boys has their own saddle. We got older good quality saddles that needed some attention, then together we worked on getting them back in riding shape. Good bonding experience, good learning experience, and they ride just a bit taller on the saddles that they fixed up themselves.

Mama did a good job; and I hope the saddle works out ok. But Dwayne now that you own your own place you forgot the best MacGyver tool that works for thousands of things, A metal coat hanger! A simple loop with you Leatherman and threading a cord thru is easy. Use pieces for so many things that I keep pieces in tubes so always have some around.

I have used drywall screws to repair saddles and they are quick and they are easy but I NEVER use them on the rigging or anything is going to take heavy use. I would use only one screw to hold the front of the seat jockey to the swell or the front barb and one hold back housing to the rear barb. Only on the cheap saddles that aren’t word a damn too. If it had a nail in it I would cut a nail to size and put it back in.

Nice job videoing Mister! That was so clear and concise that it made it very clear what you were doing. Ironically I had watched a video of a saddle maker doing a C.O.T on one of his past saddles to resale for his customer about six weeks ago. He also mentioned about using some kind of string. He did as you two did...and he didn't do it much easier, so you know it's a tough job. But as all have noted, a flat leather string would really make it a bit easier....I think. hehehe

Yay. You did it!!! I have had many many years riding English. Stirrup leathers are a whole lot easier on an English saddle. I've been riding in Western saddles for several years now and sadly my "seat" outgrew my favorite 15" seat saddle. Time to get a new saddle. I opted to get a new production line "economy" to moderate model saddle. Of coarse, the leather was stiff and very thick. So I had a great idea. I'll just swap fenders. My old ones were turned and just right. It was the first time I had ever taken them completely off. Oh my! What a chore getting them back on! Surely there had to be an easier way. No telling how long I struggled. Once done , I had the right fender on the left and vise versa! And the new cheaper saddle did not have a groove for the strap and I got bruises on my inner thighs. Why does that leather have to be so thick! Why couldn't it be nylon? You did a good job Momma!

I sure do enjoy your videos . Always seem to learn something new to improve my horsemanship . However , I just pull my leathers almost all the way through and clean and oil them ,then pull the other way till I get to the oiled part and then oil the rest of it . No need to pull them all the way out and have the hassle of putting them back in . Just my opinion .

Congratulations to your wife "Momma" on learning this great skill! Hi Dewayne, I'm an English saddle rider mostly. I noticed around the 1:50 mark in the video what I thought was "glue" on the underside of the leather as you were picking up the leather at the beginning of the video. It looked like the top leather of the saddle seat was glued to other leather below it (maybe a rawhide surface). Did you re-glue this or is that unimportant? I don't know much you might have "unglued" or even if it matters. Again, I ride in English hunter and dressage saddles, so your wife's situation is not something I'd deal with, which is why I asked and please forgive my ignorance. I've certainly seen many shoemakers use leather glues before and wondered if that was needed here.

Mr Goodman, I think what you are seeing is just a wear mark on the leather from rubbing together of the fender and stirrup leather. Just my observation of what I see.

@@garysorrells8133 , perhaps it was a wear mark. It looked like stretched glue to me, but it's a minor point and not my saddle so I won't make an issue of it. It was just something I noticed and I can be completely wrong here. Thanks for your feedback. :-)
