This pod caster has the best in class hard working walking encyclopedia on the battleship New Jersey. I'm an Army Nam vet but have watched way more of Ryan's informative U Tube vidios on the ship he takes great care of then all of the other military related vidios. Hope they allow us to walk around the ground level of dry dock after the NJ is dry docked.

I was a combat Marine in Vietnam during 2/68..New Jersey shot 16" salvos in support of our position..it was extensive and I still have very bad memories of the experience

Gravel is a good idea. But you would need a big working party and a lot of bags. And a few days. Keep the ballast and NJ will 'always' be in trim. Which may lead to other issues.

I look at things like this, we always bash government contracts as overspending on, giving the lowest bidder almost 3 times the original contract, but look at it Iowa Class Battleships are still in service as Museum ships. Now look at the Air Force, both the B-52 and the KC-135 both built in the 1950's are still in acting service to this day, and not going away for another couple decades. I also love that the USS Constitution, a ship commissioned by George Washington in 179, along with a forest of living trees to replace the timbers is still in Active Service today, no she doesn't go to war, but the Navy still sails her as a recruiting tool to this day. I also love the New Jersey, a ship I visit every couple years, is going to dry dock in the ship yard she was built in!

Ok let me get this straight... in Ryan's head he muses about loading 60000 bags of gravel inside the bow of New Jersey or even better than that, setting turret 3 on the roof of turret 1, but he still won't watch the cinematic masterpiece that is the movie Battleship.

I hope that all of our museum ships are still intact and on display at their 100 year mark. That would be a great tribute to our technological excellence in initial design, build, maintenance in operation and preservation. With all that in mind, it is wort pointing out that we (US Military/Air Force/Aerospace Industry) have an air-frame that is speculated to still be mission capable and fully operational at it's 100 year mark, and maybe even beyond. That would be none other than the B52.

When the battleship Texas became a museum ship not much was known on how to care for a retired warship. Battle ship Texas was filled with water in her oil tanks and then tied down with cables. When the wooden decks rotted lite wait concrete was poured on her main deck.

Yes, forward thinking of the state of Texas to take and save the ship, but absolutely agree there was no playbook on how to maintain it properly for the long-terms. They were built to last 25-30 years. Incidentally, NY state had briefly considered taking Texas's sistership New York, but as we know she went to Bikini Atoll for atomic testing instead. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

Knowing the state of schools in the middle of urban New Jersey, the state funding Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is probably better bang for buck in education. 13:50 USS Cole is prime museum ship material. Historically significant, and because the class is still in service it fulfills the recruitment and education role of a museum ship.

Just a thought on the gravel move. Highschool sport teams, great weight training, educational, and worthy cause. Hey coach I have a training and charity project for your teams. Go with 40lbs containers. Another thought with containers if you can get a hose in, pump a wet concrete in to plastic containers in place or near place. Still would haul out when done or for access but would save one labor going in.

It was the USS quattle canal under the command of captain Daniel gallery who later became rear Admiral gallery Interesting sidebara chief petty officer named Earl tosino was the one who came up with the idea of windmilling the subs propellers in order to provide electrical power by the time they got to port he actually had that sub's diesels in working order And while he begged hedral gallery to let him bring the Subway end of port under her own power sadly this did not happen and in one of his books Admiral gallery later said he wished that he had let chief tracino bring her in under her own power

Fill the ballast tanks with mineral oil ? I do know that there are oils that dont promote rust or corrosion and could perhaps be viable to just leaving water for long periods of time in the tanks

Question: The Oregon City class of cruisers were named for the Oregon state city, obviously. Were the later Salem class named for the Oregon state capitol or Salem, Massachusetts? Instead of gravel or water put in water moxed with a compound so that when it settles it turns into a gel that will not break downand cause leaks. This would keep the ship in permanent trim. Sort of Big J, with the J for Jell-o.😂❤

I am searching for an alternative to flooding ballast tanks to accomplish balance. In the yard, prior to settling on the blocks, it would seem possible for the big cranes to add heavy yard scrap to the bow in sufficient quantity to level the keel? The turret going forward makes sense to me but it is so massive and still not forward enough to get the job done.

How do they place the blocks of wood I suppose when the dock is full of water and then how do they position the ship perfectly while water is removed ?

New Jersey does exist in Worlds Of Warships Legends just not the PC normal version. She is very similar to Iowa in the version and has Azure Lane paint scheme. We dont have Illinois though like PC Version. Edit: We also dont have submarines which I am currently happy with. Would love to see a historically accurate version of New Jersey though.

Could you put variable thickness shim plates under the docking blocks so, that the blocks would touch the keel simultaneously despite the trim angle? At least the allowed floor loads should be checked before stacking huge amounts of gravel or other ballast to general storage areas... 😉

It's unlikely the current plan could be executed. "Plan B" might be what was done in Wilmington for Battleship North Carolina, which is to support and maintain the ship in place. Easier in Battleship North Carolina's inlet in Wilmington than the waterfront in Camden. Good question. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

When a naval ship this large was submitted to the Navy to as a potential museum ship, part of the evaluation was the ability of the host organization to do maintenance. Just look as where the other Iowa’s live. All are near or at shipyards able to handle dry docking. BB-62 is fortunate to be essentially at her original build shipyard (now under private ownership).

Ryan did mention that in a video sometime last year (shipyard alternatives) but I could not immediately find the video. Obviously Norfolk but near as I can recall, NY would be the next closest.

Why are the propellers bronze and not steel?
@justdeaf-ry6bn
@justdeaf-ry6bn 7 ай бұрын
Bronze propellers don't cause corrosion in salt water. Plus I think if they hit something the propeller will bend instead of breaking the shaft, Since Bronze is softer than steel.
@wxdave5448
@wxdave5448 7 ай бұрын
Bronze has been used for years (and similar metallurgy to this day). It is lighter and does not corrode like steel in salt water, yet is still subject to damage from cavitation (the main reason they needed to be replaced).

Since the Iowa Class ships will NEVER be reactivated and they serve absolutely NO purpose in place, removing them isn't really an issue, as far as being a museum shop. They cannot be seen underwater and they are actually a maintenance issue, if left in place. Removing them would serve two purposes: One, they can be viewed up close and it takes a LOT of stress off the propeller shafts and the seals that keep water OUT of the ship. As for the metal thief comment by someone else, this is a non-issue, as well. They are way too big to be carried off and cutting them isn't easy, either.
