Thank you! I'm from Florida and visiting my Mom in Pennsylvania for the month of December for the Holiday's. After three travel days and two days visiting needed to do a load of laundry. Put cloths in dryer and after an hour they were still wet!!!! Didn't know exactly how to tell Mom that I just killed her dryer. Anyway, found your video and the dryer came apart just as you described. Got a new belt at a local appliance store and hour and a half later dryer fixed and good to go for the next couple years. Thank you very much for making this so easy to understand and my Mother happy! PS: The dryer was a Maytag and came apart exactly as your video.

Thank you for the comments about the groove. You saved me from ordering a belt that I assumed was stretched but really just needed to be pulled forward from the front to make more tension. I just replaced the plastic blower fan. In the process everything...drum kind of dropped and lost tension on the belt. Problem solved. Thanks. As a one time deal I had no idea.

Please note: It is counter intuitive that the belt DOES NOT go in the groove in the drum. You'd think that it does, but it does not. Took me ruining a new belt to figure this out. Examine the wear mark from the old belt on the drum. As installed, the belt rides the drum just forward (towards the door) of the groove in order for it to not bind up on the pulley system. I feel that it is easier to get it all together with the belt in the drum groove, and then once everything is bolted and back in place, rotate the drum by hand clockwise and pull the belt out of the groove toward you with your fingers as you turn it, and it will align properly. This is important! Other than this important detail, great video that helped me fix my dryer.

Absolutely true - that narrow grove at the rear of the drum is NOT where the belt rides. It rides just forward as Chris Smay describes - you should be able to see the mark of the belt on the drum surface. Thanks, Mr. Smay - saved me some ( not all ;-) ) frustration.

Thank you! This helped me a lot. One thing I did a little differently that helped me: when threading the belt between the pulleys, I looped it around the small pulley first, and then while pushing the large pulley worked the belt around that. My dryer has a removable panel on the back that gave access to this, not mentioned in the video.

I just completed a "tune up" of my model DE482. (1988) Rollers, Axles, Belt, and after I got into it. I had tons of slippage on the squirrel fan. I corrected that, luckily, but taking the tension clip off, bending it to make it tighter, and re installed it along with a good cleaning. My advice for anyone who replaces a belt once every ten years, is get the belt generally in place, and then OPEN THE ACCESS DOOR in the back of the dryer. I spent an hour trying the way they demonstrated just working from the front by feel and imagination. I got real frustrated, and checked the back of the unit, and 4 steel screws and one panel removed. I had it wound around the motor and pulley in 5 minutes. Save yourself a little aggravation and use the rear access to attach the belts to the motor. Thanks Repair clinic for being a parts retailer and DIY demonstrator that gives mere mortals the confidence to take on the appliance word!!

Btw this video although not completely detailed enough to make my repair, the visual showing the pulleys was priceless and i couldn't have done it without it, especially considering i wouldn't have had a clue what the configuration was. I would have ended up having to take it outside and take the back off and it would have been one hell of a mess. So thank you very much for the video you save me a bunch of money and time,,, Thank again!!!

This was great - thank you very much! My only comments are that I struggled visualizing that the view of the pulley is from the back of the dryer, and not the front. I also struggled because I was putting the belt in one of the grooves of the drum, rather than on the drum itself, which caused the belt to sit incorrectly. After three attempts, and 10+ views of the video, I finally got it - thanks again!

Thank you too for the great video. But, interestingly enough, I am having the same problem. The belt is touching the belt on the motor pulley. This is stopping the drum from turning due to the opposite movement of friction between the two. It is installed just as the video outlines with the grooved side on the motor pulley and the flat side on the idle pulley. The video shows about 1 inch clearance between the belt returning from the idle pulley to the drum and the motor pulley.

This video was helpful. I have a couple suggestions. First, you failed to mention that once the front bulkhead was removed, the drum was free floating and not attached to anything including the back. Secondly as was mentioned elsewhere, it is much easier to loop the belt through the tensioner with the back access panel removed.

This is critical. The video is reversed to what I see from the front. Why don’t you change your video instead of pretending that your video was perfect the way it was? These diy videos should be idiot proof and I don’t mean that to be an insult to all of us who will probably only change a belt on a dryer once in a lifetime. KISS principle. Don’t leave room for error of interpretation.

I received the correct replacement belt in the mail but was did not have enough slack to get the belt around the pulleys using the instructions from the video. I was finally able to complete the job but only after channeling my inner MacGyver. Everyone says line up the belt on the drum where the old wear mark is. That's true but in my case only after installation around the pulleys is complete. In my case the belt was too tight to get around the pulleys when the new belt was in correct position therefor i found a concave groove (you can also make out the *convex* effect of the groove on the *inside* of the drum in this video and there is also a 2nd identical groove closer to the front edge of the drum) on the exterior of the drum that's about 0.25" deep that's only about 0.50" further towards the back of the drum from the wear mark. By temporarily looping the belt down in that drum groove it gave me just the amount of slack i needed to install the belt quite easily. Then it took just a little muscle to stretch the belt back into its proper position, but the transition from the groove back to the wear mark is smooth and graduated so it wasn't that difficult to slide it back in place. If you want to edit in a notation about this into the video, i'm sure it would help a lot of people before they run into the same problem.
@fonduemonkey
@fonduemonkey 9 жыл бұрын
fonduemonkey actually now i'm starting to wonder about something ,,, i wonder if the belt is supposed to stay down in that groove on the drum permanently. The belt-wear-marks about 0.50" away from the groove may be due to someone installing the belt incorrectly in the past. My Maytag is model#DG4910 ser#250922 BZ. If anyone can answer that for me i would be grateful. At this point the drum is a little tuff to spin by hand.

For this particular model of Maytag the drum actually isn’t attached to the back panel it’s free and will fall off. Also there is a back panel on the bottom right of the back of the dryer that you can take off to reattach the belt. Don’t do it from the front. Put the belt around the drum. Reseat the drum. Reattach the front panel then go around the back take off the small panel and attach it to the drive mechanism. So much easier.

Hey, I'm having a very difficult time keeping the belt from twisting onto wring side, as well as getting enough slack to slip over the smaller pulley, even with the belt in groove etc - belt keeps falling off the back end of the drum. I'm working in it through the back access panel. Any tips/ideas you might wish to share would be greatly appreciated! :)

If the belt is removed, shouldn't the wheels spin quickly? I had a broken belt, but after replacing it, the pulley/wheel assembly just barely turns at all. It seems odd that both the motor would have gone out at precisely the same time the belt broke, but I didn't make any other changes that would seem to cause the super slow-motion revolution.

Thanks for this video. I replaced my belt and it cost me $19.05 plus $8.97 shipping. The hardest part was placing the belt through the pulley. It ran the dryer about five loads since and quite proud of my accomplishment :o), however now I am starting to smell smoke. :o( I took the time to vacuum all the dust and lint when I replaced the belt. Does the pulley need adjusting?
@repairclinic
@repairclinic 10 жыл бұрын
The pulley Has a spring and does not need adjusting the spring keeps tension on the pulley to keep the belt tight. This is the only dryer that runs the belt with the rib side facing away from the drum. If you have the ribs facing the drum it might be causing the problem. If the smell is not a rubber smell there may have been some lint that got on the heater that is causing the smell.

So much easier if you take the time to pull the dryer away from the wall and remove the small access panel that allows you to see the pulley area. Do not... DO NOT let the belt get into the groove in the tumbler drum. The belt on on my Maytag must go around the smooth part of the drum, otherwise the belt will rub against itself at the motor pulley area.

Sounds like the motor switch is stuck. I would try and turn the drum by hand both ways and see if it turns . If you can’t turn the drum you will need to take the drum out again and see if the motor turns freely without the belt on. Check the wires on the motor to see if they are on correctly and to make sure one didn't fall off when you replaced the motor.

Mine was a bugger new belt too tight...so pushed belt back so it dropped in groove, then threaded the idler and motor pulley easily, then when you rotate the drum the belt comes right back up on to the drum in the correct position...That is what worked for mine....I think they left that step out intentionally, why ? your guess is good as mine. This video is the only one I watched that showed the proper way to take the dryer apart. The other ones tell you to find the clip under the top panel and pop it open with a screw driver. This is not correct and along with a belt I have to buy 2 top clips.

For a belt replacement the replacement should still be about the same.

2 minutes and 40 seconds? Sure, if you can expertly edit a video. Where is the part about the drum rocking back and forth like a teeter totter? Not possible to do by yourself. You definitely need a 2nd person
