next time run the drill in reverse till you get thru the siding then switch back to forward. in reverse the teeth will not grab and cause your siding to tear like it did.

100% yes. This can also be used when you're hole sawing for door deadbolts. Even with the plastic adapter they sell in hardware stores. Set your drill to reverse, the teeth won't watch the wood as hard, but it will still score the surface - and eventually create a groove for the hole saw and won't jump out.

Good job you did it yourself! One easy thing for drilling through siding is drill your hole in reverse until your through the siding it's less aggressive and won't tear your siding! After you make it through the vinyl switch it back to forward and continue doing the rest of your hole...

Why did you need the telescoping tube?. Couldn't you have connected direct to the outside and use a semi-rigid tube from dryer to new vent hole? You'd shift the dryer to the left giving more room to the washer at the right.

Another video I watched suggested turning the hole cutter in reverse when cutting through the vinyl siding to prevent cracking or splitting it.

when you cut through your vapor barrier you created a big problem for yourself. you really should go back and seal up the vapor barrier with the specific tape or caulking made for that purpose otherwise you will get mold/mildew and water damage

Just an FYI I should've mentioned for others. They do make booster fans for long runs, if you have to have a long run. And, all dryer vents should be regularly checked for lint, but, longer ones do require cleaning more often.

This fix could be a potential nightmare scenario if you live in colder climates. The vent steam will freeze your door shut. I've had this setup when I first bought the house. Had to reroute to another location away from the doors. 2 storm doors destroyed and weather stripping to entry door destroyed before I could get around to fixing it. This must be ok for warmer climates.

Good job using foil tape and not duct tape but as others have pointed out, the exhaust location was a poor choice and is actually in violation of Residential building code: M1502.2 Duct termination. Exhaust ducts shall terminate on the outside of the building or shall be in accordance with the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions. Exhaust ducts shall terminate not less than 3 feet (914 mm) in any direction from openings into buildings. Exhaust duct terminations shall be equipped with a backdraft damper. Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination.

Good vid. I'm surfing Ytube since our vent hose came off on inside & was suddenly blowing moist air inside. HVAC guy would easily charge $150 for what I'm doing. Discovered the home builder cut a corner by installing too short a rigid 4"dia vent duct on the inside of wall (short stubby 6" length) AND failed to fasten it down, so I'm going to install a new 9"long piece (rigid, about 30gauge). This vid shows the 1" overhang needed for the Foil tape i needed to know. Thx mate. The Telescope-style vent looks promising, however per Amazon owner reviews only the model is best ( says AVOID the "DAF...Skinny Ducts" at all costs because it will not mate with other vent duct parts &the metal is way too thin & flemsy.) Cutting a 4" hole in vinyl siding --a Dremel Tool with Circle Cutter & Straight Edge Guide Model 678 & Cutting Bit #561 works great. I'd strongly recommend plugging up the prior 4" hole --extremely easy to do -- just use that 4inch sheetrock disk you cut out from the new hole, short wood Fir strip (3/4" thick /3 1/2"wide /8"long) and Dap CrackSHOT High Performance Spackling Paste (heavy mud). Slip the wood thru the 'inside' hole & run a sheetrock screw about 1inch from the edge into the sheetrock on each side, add ur 4" disc, then putty over. My Electrician did this in my garage after he ran new wire for a new outlet.

$250 drove you to do it yourself? Friend, $250 relieves yourself of all liability in case anything goes wrong, including the cracked vinyl siding, weather leaks, etc. That's bargain, and I would've hired them to do it. That said, I was happy to see the video and appreciative that you shared it. That telescoping (ahem telescooooping, long 'o') vent looks like trouble to me though... I would not use that crap.

Good job with couple of mistakes as follows: 1. The dryer vent location is a problematic (entrance to property ) !! 2. You should only reverse drill on both dry wall and vinyl siding. If I were you I would try to move washer and dryer to a garage if possible or to fix the issue without moving dryer vent location.

I see you have some big ticket installers looking at your project. You'll note them for the negative comments meant to make you feel bad by doing it yourself and not paying them $35/hr. I would say the periscope tube isn't the best idea. I have one I used for my a/c system while I was renting. That way I didnt cut through walls. If this is your house, do get the rigid vent.

Not trying to discourage DIY, but $250 was a steal. The hole saw and arbor cost at least $40... that's a tool that most people won't use again. Also caulking around vinyl siding is not going to seal the vent. Vinyl siding doesn't keep water from rotting your paneling or getting into the house through dryer vents or windows or any other cutout. It's the paper and gaskets. Paying a professional $250 to insure that you are covered by there liability insurance in the case of a leak is WELL worth it in this case... especially when materials were probably $100 (after replacing the cracked vinyl siding)

That is the worse possible set up..You never use a periscope vent at all, it creates too much back pressure and fill the dryer up with lint. Also that cheap plastic outside wall vent will crack easily with heat or temperature change, also you should be using 26 gauge snap lock galvanized piping thru the wall...The list goes on and on....Let the Professional do it or do it right yourself.

OH. MY. GAWD. 1) It's called a "periscope"; not a "telescopic ventilation tube". 2) You should not have put a hole in a location that breaches a moisture/outside barrier without knowing how to properly repair after. That stuff is there for a reason. That being said, your outside hole would have been lined up if you went from the outside and drilled inward first. 3) The vinyl siding didn't "crack because it was a little cool." 4) Periscopes are among the MOST restrictive vents. A large amount of the moisture is trapped, which results in longer drying times; and you could very likely blow your motor. 5) "Removed the excess from the existing tube." More like you removed way too much. No wonder you said you "hope to seal it up some way shape or form." 6) "Zero leakage into the room." Really? 12:07 You didn't use that "3M foil tape" on the big slices in the periscope. 7) Why do you think this video is good enough to post to demonstrate for others to follow? You should be embarrassed!

1.) You could have found a better location. After a few months to a year you'll have your own answer as to why. 2.) You spent $40 in materials total? What about your labor. Wjhat do you get paid per diem on your job? Don't forget to add on the gas travel time and time spent in Home Depot and the caulking or vinyl siding repair work if you go ahead with that…. . 3.) You did not get through as cleanly as you possibly could have- In fact you messed up, (Hint You used the wrong hole saw bit for vinyl portion.but no matter.) Conclusion- If you still did this project for what you are played for a day- Otherwise You lost money.

You sound like a jealous contractor. Hurts when homeowners do their own work huh? Yeah, he's going to figure out a little lint by his front door, but it looks like he keeps that pretty clean anyway and it isn't going to be a big deal. Also, anytime a homeowner does his own work it's considered an investment. Any costs for his time is countered with pride of ownership, maybe you're not a homeowner...which would explain a lot. I started doing my own work when I paid somebody to do something and it looked like I did it. LOL I'd say if he thinks it looks good and it's functional it's perfect.

I came on line looking for the new code compliant hard pipe installation to see if anyone had a faster way to do it than I .Instead I came across this video which reminded me of how I would do something 40 years ago before I became a professional. He doesn't "sound like a jealous contractor", he sounds like someone who knows what they're doing. The vent is too close to the front door. We're not just talking about "a little lint", we're talking about a building code violation. He also destroyed that piece of siding, which is now going to let water leak into the wall, and he cut through the vapor barrier without taping it afterwards, which is going to cause mold to grow after the water gets in through the broken siding. If you're going to DIY, make sure you know how to do the job right - otherwise it's going to cost a lot more to repair the damage you cause than it would to hire a pro in the first place.

Kind of stuff I see when I go to a homeowners house. I never use that style of venting for exterior. That just make a hole for critters to get in. Preferably a birdcage would be best. DIYers are good entertainment, especially when they think they "know it all."

Holy crap what an awful job! You destroyed the siding and then just left the damaged piece there??!? Why didn't you use a vent with a built-in trim channel for vinyl siding? You wouldn't have had to drill, it would have been a square cut you could make with a knife. If you worked for me you'd be fired and if that were my house you wouldn't get paid.
