How To Clean Your Dryer Vent Duct - Step By Step - It's Super Simple!

Learn how to quickly and effectively clean the lint out of your dryer duct. Cleaning your dryer vent makes your dryer more efficient and reduces the risk of fire from dryer vent lint. Every load of laundry leaves just a little bit more lint sticking to the inside walls of your dryer vent duct. Even if you clean your lint trap with every load, some lint will always get past that trap. This lint builds up and coats the inner walls of your dryer duct, and over time it can build up so thick it can literally close off the duct entirely.

Dryer cleaning should be done at least every couple of years if not every year. Our neighbors house had a fire in their dryer on Thanksgiving and caused so much damage it took a year before they could move back home.

This is, hands down, the best KZbin instructional video that I've ever seen. It's clear, concise, well filmed and edited, with no music pulsing during the instruction part to distract. You have a calm, clear voice, too, that makes listening a pleasure. Lastly, I love how you address things that could happen, why it matters, and how to avoid those things, and you give helpful tips (ie black electrical tape), too! Wonderful video. Thank you!

This was so helpful! I’m a single woman who proudly owns her own home, but we lost my stepdad to cancer a couple of years ago, and he was the guy who helped me fix everything. There are tons of people like me, and what you all do - filling in the gaps for those of us who don’t have someone to help us out with this stuff, or the funds to pay someone else - is not only a wonderful public service, but a great gift of kindness. That doesn’t even begin to cover how clear, simple, and unintimidating your instructions were - thank you so very much! I’ll be picking up a dryer clean out kit tomorrow!

How do you know how long the vent line is? I have the kit but my vent is on the roof. I may need the extra extender rods
@allendana9601
@allendana9601 3 жыл бұрын
Your video potentially saved us from a house fire. I bought the product you mentioned in the video together with 12 foot extensions. I ended up using all 8 rods to clean the vent; a full 24 feet. My wash room is in the center of the house and the vent goes straight up to nearly top of my roof. There were 2 x 5 gallon buckets full of lint when I finished. The product was very easy to use. One tip is to roll the electrical tape in a fashion so that it does not come unraveled. Especially if you create a flap as in the video. You can test this by putting your glove over the tape and rotating the drill slowly. If it stays flat, you have it in the correct rotation. Another tip is to have a service technician clean inside the dryer itself. This involves removing the back panel. There was another 5-gallon bucket full of link inside the dryer itself. Inside we found burnt lint. So don’t hesitate to clean your dryer vent and check your dryer yearly. Thank you for this video.

Out of curiosity, how long did you go without cleaning that vent? I just did mine after 3 years (newish homeowner and kind of forgot about it until right now) and while I had a bit of lint, it was nowhere close to that much.
@allendana9601
@allendana9601 5 ай бұрын
I did not clean the vent for about 1 year. The root cause was that my really old dryer was not filtering that well. Because the vent was clogged, the moisture in the vent was higher, causing the lint stick to the walls of the vent faster than normal. After replacing the dryer with a new model, the vent does not have nearly as much lint. In fact, my new dryer has a feature to detect clogged vent. I encourage everyone to regularly check you dryer vent for built up. @@kounurasaka5590

I almost paid a ridiculous amount of money to have someone else clean my dryer vent but someone mentioned checking KZbin. I am so lucky I came across your video. As many have said, your instructions and tips are easy to follow with confidence, your voice is clear and calming, and I like being able to support your efforts and help myself out by following your link to the kit. I'll be paying a fraction of the cost to get my dryer vent clean the first time - just the cost of the brush kit. Then I can clean my dryer vent as often as I want/need to for free. Without you - specifically - not some other DIY person - I wouldn't have felt that I could do this. Thank you so much.

I just DID pay a ridiculous amount of money to have mine cleaned. I called the guy who replaced what was very dangerous plastic flexible duct with metal duct 8 years ago and it hadn't been cleaned since. It just occurred to me. I didn't even ask him the price up front because I recalled the price he told me when he did the duct was very reasonable. When he got here he said it would be $179. First, I hate when people price things to the "9's", but research has shown people will almost always buy the $179 item over the $180 price someone else offers...almost without fail and often not even considering other factors. Secondly, I expected half of that price or at least under $100 but clearly I did no research. He gave me $15 off when I mentioned the discount card he gave me 8 years ago but that will likely be the last time I hire him or anyone as long as I'm physically capable of doing it myself. If this guy did 5 jobs a day (he was here less than an hour). That's $895 a day (and he was booked weeks out), that's a very lucrative over $200K a year single-man business.

As a former city volunteer with Police and Fire and Rescue I have heard many stories about house fires due to dryers. Once a year cleaning is a minimum cleaning schedule. If you dry multiple loads a week, every 6 months is much safer especially if you have a family with children. As with changing batteries in fire alarms every six months, I like the schedule using spring and autumn equinox to remember to do household 6-month chores, also day light savings time is popular with some people. Thank you for posting this DIY dryer cleaning video. Very easy to follow and I love the type of kit you are using.

Thank you for an excellent KZbin video. I own the same dryer cleaning kit and do this job once a year. Your tips about taping the rods and NEVER running the drill in reverse are spot on. It is obvious that you have done this job and used the tools because you nailed everything right about the whole process. The most difficult part of it is exactly what you said, moving the dryer and then breaking and making the flexible vent hose connections. Very nice job, thank you again.

Great instructional video...I've been using the "LintEater" for nearly 20-yrs; at my home and at a 2-family house I maintain. I make it a habit to schedule yearly cleanings. I designed the dryer exhaust vents at each home using 4" round metal ducts; sealed with either high temp flue tape or aluminum foil tape rated for high temps due to their properties of adherence and being flame retardant; and then terminating each end with metal (stainless steel) worm gear duct clamps. Simple construction; simple cleaning, as you have demonstrated, and does not require a "professional" to install or clean. This is not a hi-tech or specialized industry requiring training or using proprietary materials; and that's the point of a DIYer video...to inspire and enlighten those who wish to learn and do the work themselves! Thanks for sharing; I appreciate it. Best wishes and kindest regards.

Great video. I have used that exact same product for years and it works great. I don’t bother taping the rods together and have never had a problem and I have an extra long run. I clean mine from the outside in and connect my shop vac on the drier side. You should clean your dryer ducts at least every year. Also, if you use a vinyl collapsable connection on your drier, replace it with a metal one. The vinyl one is a fire hazard. I used the clog removal tool to clear a clog in the underground pipes that carry water away from my gutter downspouts.

This is one of my favorite “seasonal checklist” items for my handyman clients. Around DST I go to my regular clients homes and do all the routine home maintenance things (smoke detector batteries/furnace air filters/dryer ducts/water heater flush/reverse ceiling fans/change light bulbs/etc). I charge $50 for simple ground floor dryer duct cleaning but up to $150 for second floor or complex vent systems. It’s easy money and something the average homeowner never thinks of or doesn’t want to do. Excellent instructional video!👍🏻

Love it!! Using a vacuum cleaner is really smart when you don’t want lint to go everywhere especially in the environment. Bc you know synthetic clothing is also in lint and it’s a Microplastic! Either way bravo

I recently had my family's dryer cleaned by a local appliance repair center from some lint build-up inside the exhaust,drum and lint trap chute. I just did not want to risk a dryer fire. I use the Gardus LintEater Dryer Vent Cleaning System Kit regularly to clean the dryer vent duct that leads to the patio. I learned the importance of cleaning dryer vent ducts from online and from your helpful video on how to clean a dryer vent.

Great video. Hardly any of these dryer vents are installed to code, which limits the length and amount of elbows. I take the cabinet apart and vacuum out the inside of the dryer also, especially with gas dyers. The lint seals go bad, and then the cabinet will have a layer of lint, which is very flammable. That termination was a little to close to the ground. I would dig a little gravel out and get more clearance.

Yup, any time there's a small dryer repair, it comes out, comes apart and gets cleaned. Once you have one apart, you realize that you paid for mostly air when you bought it...

Great video!!! Very informative & detailed. I was scared to do this myself because my dryer vent requires me to get up on a ladder to the 2nd floor of the house (I’m terrified of heights) But now you gave me the knowledge & courage to do it myself. You probably saved me about $200 give or take. Thank you so much, I’ll be purchasing this kit soon & I’ll tackle this job this weekend. You earned my subscription.

I have to say this is one of the best videos i have ever watched! Your personality, excellent speed of delivery and clear videos are the reason as well as the politeness and attention to details. KEEP IT UP we need you. One suggestion I would like to add is for you to show the details of the boroscope used to film inside ducts and the best procedure to use it. Thanks!
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James! There is a link to the borescope I used in the video description. As for the best way to use it: you tether your phone to it via wifi, and it streams the video directly to your phone. It's pretty convenient to use that way, since the screen is not physically connected to the borescope. This frees up both hands to manipulate the scope as you thread it into things. I like this scope, but do wish it had a little better image quality. Thanks for watching!

I recently told a relative about the Gardus LintEater Dryer Vent Cleaning System Kit that helps keep the dryer vent clean. I appreciate the helpful video. I am thankful that I discovered lint build-up inside my family's dryer last weekend,before a dryer fire could happen. I surprised my father that dryers should be cleaned once a year to prevent dryer fires.

My parents have a house with a roof exit duct. I forget what my father would do to clean it, but you could always tell when it happened because there would be a mess of lint on the roof for a while afterwards. So much lint! Where I live right now, the pipe is maybe a foot long after the flex tube. Great thorough instructional video here! That ending was pretty amusing, too!

I make it a regular habit to vacuum the back ventilation holes,heat grilles inside the dryer,dryer, and vent. I decided to clean my dryer and vent this Sunday evening. I was surprised by some lint build-up inside my vacuum canister. I never thought of regularly cleaning my dryer and vent until a repairman opened up the dryer drum in 2022. The dryer drum had lint on the wires and drum. I have heard real stories about dryer fires from news and local repairmen. I came across your helpful video about how to clean a dryer vent. I actually use the Gardus LintEater Dryer Vent Cleaning brushes to help clean lint. I do not want to risk a house fire from lint build-up in my dryer and vent. I appreciate the helpful video. I have told other people about the importance of cleaning a dryer vent from your video.

Wow! I learned a lot from this video. We’ve been in our new home for close to 5 years, and I guess it’s time. I don’t have a shop vac, so I either need to buy one or figure out how to use my canister vacuum. Thanks for a great tutorial, and for making it simple to understand.

I’ve had other viewers report that they have made a canister vacuum work. However, a shop vac is useful for all kinds of other things, so if you have the budget and storage space for one, I recommend it.

Great video. When I've cleaned vents in the past I've moved the brush by hand, which works well but not as well as the drill. An electric leaf blower or compressor is also good for blowing out the excess lint.

Hadn't cleaned mine for several years. Did mine a slightly different way not expecting how much was in it. Took off the bird guard on the outside of the house facing the back yard. Took my Craftsman Shop Vac and folded a hand towel around the end of the hose and slid it into where the hose comes from the dryer. Turned it on to the blow setting and gave it two minutes. Looked out my door wall and realized I created Christmas in July in my back yard. I have never went the extent that this video does, but always make sure I regularly do it now. And If you end up with the mess I had, Just cut the grass and it comes up with the clippings :)

Great video. I'm going to tackle this. My laundry area is so tight I'll never be able to get a shop vac behind the dryer so I will try this from the outside vent, which for me is easily accessible at about 3 feet off the ground in a clear area with a removable cover. Thanks for mentioning so many of the variables involved in the project. There can often be stopping points when one presenter has a particular set of circumstances that don't apply to other people's situations. Thanks to your tips I was able to think through my situation for hopefully a successful process!
