Thanks for the demonstration. "Salting out" is a useful technique for separating liquids that are miscible with water that is not mentioned often, yet it's quite more easy and energy efficient than distillation (which requires getting the temperature right and providing a lot of heat).

Or you could just buy ISO-HEET which is 99% Isopropanol alcohol and simply needs a few tables spoons of salt to be shaken about and then voila, anhydrous IPA after decanted off the floor of whatever container you're using.

@shanescatsandcannabisfarm2965

The original alcohol was 120ml @ 70%/30%. Then he added in another 100ml of water. So a total of 220ml of liquid. So the alcohol content went from being 70% to only 38.2% alcohol. That being said the amount of alcohol at the top should be 84ml.
@shanescatsandcannabisfarm2965
@shanescatsandcannabisfarm2965 3 жыл бұрын
He could have just added 1.5 table spoons of salt to the 120ml @70% I.S.A. and separated the 84ml of pure I.SA. without adding the extra water like he did. Idk why he did that.

This explains why adding salt helps clean a bong or sweeten a wooden pipe. By separating the water from the alcohol you increase its ability to absorb other compounds. In the case of sweetening a pipe the action of the water separating and going to the bottom actually helps displace compounds in the wood.

@duff can - You're thinking of Methanol, which can cause widespread neurological damage. Drinking Isopropanol commonly causes effects similar to Ethanol but usually causes vomiting and can also cause more severe effects like diarrhea, pain, and even bleeding in the stomach and intestines as a consequence.
