Is Isopropyl alcohol safe?

Some peole raised concerns over my mess free resin printing workflow in the last video. Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to get everyone to discard gloves, but rather to show that resin 3D printing can be a lot less messy than most people think.
You can fire away from behind your keyboard, or you can put in the time and effort to make an informative video putting your money where your mouth is. I chose the latter and in this video I present my findings and justify MY choices. Your choice is yours alone and you should make it on the basis of your own investigation.
If you disagree, you're entitled to your opinion and you're free to use IPA in any manner you wish. Watch the whole video and comment in a constructive way if you are so compelled.

I worked with a product for many years that was thought to be harmless by myself and by my co workers. It was a harder agent for a filler putty. Eventually one of my co workers became so sensitive to the product, he could not even be in the same room as others who had been using it. His reaction was that his forehead blistered and the blisters would eventually burst and weep. We concluded that the act of wiping his forehead with his forearm when working had in fact brought the product into close contact with an area of skin that was sensitive. As a normal precaution we always washed our hands before going to the bathroom so as to not touch sensitive skin with contaminated hands. It just goes to show that when you apparently have no reaction to a product it is probably better to protect yourself anyway just in case of long term reactions.

Hi Paul Johnson, are you talking about glazing putty? I read that long-term exposure to its fumes could result in hearing damage.

We learned about this in my “Industrial Hygiene” class. It is called “contact dermatitis” if i remember correctly. I don’t remember all the specifics, but basically some of the “nasties” can cause you to be allergic to them if you are chronically exposed to a high enough concentration. Then you get a nasty allergic reaction in your skin mainly. I think some of the epoxy resins can do this as well. At the end of the day main thing are read the SDS sheets (even if they are boring), implement safety/industrial hygiene measures, and just common sense stuff like you said. I know at work (i do construction now) i try and “wash out” before eating and before leaving/driving in my car midday to get supplies.

I messed around with this stuff quite a bit as a teenager. *I had the bright idea to buy a super soaker from walmart and use this alcohol to make a flame thrower. It worked very well.* *I used to pour a good splash in the bathroom sink and light it making a huge flame but it wouldnt destroy the finish in the sink or make sut and I could distinguish it by running the water in the faucet.* *I then nearly burned down my old girfriends house cause I lit som on her marble floor.. I put too much ...flame was 4 feet high and was moving towarss the couch. I fetched a shit ton of towels ran it under bathtub water and threw them on it... now I had a wet wad of lit towels..got more...extinguished disaster... it burned the fuck out of the front of her couch though...."oops..that was stupid"*

Scenario: Container catches fire, and the technician or student freaks out a bit; rather than closing the lid, they trip, and knock over the entire flaming bath like a boss. 3rd degree burn tiiiime! In this case we're combining two unlikely outcomes (accidental fire and clumsiness). However the second unlikely outcome is conditioned on the first. The solution might be to implement safety drills (like you did), where the technician or student intentionally sets the mixture on fire. Note that if we're not comfortable with the risks and liability of such safety drills, then open vats of flammable material might not be suitable for our setting.

Good discussion. For the record at school we don't let the students near anything to do with the resin printers. For me at home I'm comfortable with this, although now I have a larger bath.

Reminds of a time when I was a kid, my Mom was freaking out in the kitchen because grease in a pan had caught on fire. I simply grabbed the baking powder and dumped it all over the fire. No more fire.

What I do is, I use a small seal-able container put isopropanol inside the seal-able container, put distilled water inside my ultrasonic cleaner and I take that container put it in the water solution, run the ultrasonic cleaner and that works. Cheaper because I need to use less isopropanol and safer cause the fumes can't escape the small container. The sound waves penetrate the small seal-able container as long its submerged inside the water inside the ultrasonic cleaner.

Comes down to the first lesson in high school science class...work safely with ANY chemical. I use Isopropyl all the time for cleaning paint out of airbrushes, and paint brushes, and half the time am spraying it directly on to my fingers when cleaning small parts and have had no reaction. Also have Isocol rubbing alcohol. Breathing in the smell can make me feel a bit queezy, but I ventilate well while using it!

It is usually isopropyl alcohol in hand sanitizer. Some 5 - 10% and some even above 50%

One thing you missed regarding the ultrasonic cleaner is the bigger one has heaters to 80 degrees C is that higher than yha flamimg point

can IPA in a bottle catch on fire if left in the sun? like for example to try to separate resin?

If it’s sparked by something at a degree higher than 12*c, then yes it can catch fire. If you’re doing this for weed, use a water distiller for the large portion evaporation then follow it up with a magnetic stirrer hot plate for the final ethanol/IPA evaporation.

Even though they are both alcohols (alcohols are a group of chemicals) they are not the same substance they don’t have the same molecular structure and thus have different effects

the similarity is that neither make a very good drinks cocktail.... the differences are many... what they are produced from etc. Methyl alcohol is also called methanol, sometimes used in race/drag vehicles because its high octane rating means a lot more of it can be compressed with air into an engine's cylinder. Methanol is also what's added to ethanol (normally simply called alcohol, the stuff people drink) to make drinking it unlikely due to taste and health effects..... so it can be sold to the general public for household and other uses, without losing any government tax on alcoholic drinks. isopropanol... for domestic use...rub a dub dub.

Those are not cleaners, that is hand sanitizer. When you use them, you are just sanitizing the shit on your hands. Now when you touch your face, you are touching it with sterilized shit. It is my experience that women are more likely to use hand sanitizers. So... girly?

As long as you’re not bathing your body in a tub of it, 70% is generally safe for use in contact with skin (most medical wipes before injection are 70% IPA). I clean makeup brushes with it all the time. It cleanses and evaporates. Just don’t breath the fumes, and you should be fine, so long as you don’t have an acute sensitivity, which you’d know quickly, and it would likely be mild. Anyone can be allergic to anything in the world. Fear of reaction to 70% IPA is about as logical as fear of a reaction to putting table salt on your skin, (even less really, generally).

@@oktopus1539 No issues, I created a rubber gasket and weight the lid down to prevent oxygen from mixing with the vapors when idle. I also ground the lid to the body so any current will want to travel through the wire instead of arcing. The only risks now is an open flame hovering over the tank or a large spill, both of which are unlikely.

@@gmuk101 No never an issue with Elegoo products. Big fan of them actually. I found IPA cleaned my prints better than just washing them in water when using water washable resin. Heard a few popular YTers mention it yielding better results even.
