This is a video in which I will do a supplementing update on a weekly basis as part of this experiment with drying wood with a fan. I hope by doing this I will get the wood to under 20% MC in less time than just air drying without the assistance of any moving air around the stack. This does not take the place of Kiln drying lumber. I hope that this only speeds up the process to remove enough moisture out of the wood so I can kiln dry it faster. This is very interesting to me and I hope my Sub, also share this interest.

A lightweight ribbon held in your hand (or on the end of a stick) will give you a clear understanding of where air is moving. On a sailboat, we call those ribbons "telltales."

Very interesting! I am 75% complete on building a VT designed solar kiln. I am doing some experimenting myself.

I have found that lower humidity aids in drying rather than heat although heat does help in a sealed environment. That said at 85% humidity in the summer in Southern States open-air drying is slow. I found that it's faster in the winter at lower humidity (20-30%) with good airflow. The other thing I found out was instead of using a moister probe it was better to weigh a sample piece. When it stops losing weight it's ready for the kiln. Ditto for wood brought into the shop before building a project. Everyone goes on about "what is the optimum moisture content" before a build. It can give one a headache. I use a postal scale that can weight up to 87 pounds in 1/10th of an ounce increments. Works like a charm and only cost $19 on Ebay.

Just found your channel and subscribed about a week ago. Love it so far. I binge watched a few episodes a couple of days ago. I look forward to the shed build. In one of your responses I see you mentioned a solar kiln. I've had an interest in possibly building one. Do you have any videos on that? My uncle, who has been a woodsman all his life, built a kiln of sort out of an old box trailer. That seems to work for him. Thanks. I look forward to more videos.

Nothing on a solar kiln just yet. I hope to build a regular size kiln at the end of this year if things go my way. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

looking forward to see the results of this, two questions though i live in the uk so different conditions though, but do you think you will trouble with losing too much moisture too fast i've had this trouble myself and if you are running the fans for 6-8hrs a day will the boards reobsorb moisture through the night due to high humdity in your area..many thanks scott

Those are good questions. I hope to answer them with this experiment. I think at night I will be ok due to the following principal. In Solar kilns they do not run at night and give the wood a rest period to equalize. My goal is just to get them to under 20%MC without defects. I appreciate the interest. Thanks for watching. Got the fan running now. I will check back next weekend with a new video to show my progress/results or failure.

great project/experiment...you like a mad scientist.....lol..one question would a duck fan be more efficient in drying. But also the extra cost of the duck mite not be cost effective. Looking forward to more of your videos....sorry that's ducted fan....lol...i would try and blame spell check but that was my fault...lol

Any follow up video? Can I air dry without a kiln? Location is Montgomery Alabama. Currently have 2 box fans on each end of the stack of pine 2x4's and 2x6's.

Hi, I've been following along for a while and I really enjoy your channel. This will be an interesting series, I have two thoughts and I would be interested to hear what you think. Will it be economically worthwhile to do this in terms of the outlay on electricity? It seems that the benefit will be getting the lumber ready to sell in a shorter time frame. Did you consider using a floorstanding fan placed at one end of the stack to blow air along the length? I think this would yield more airflow overall than the set up you have. There maybe problems with uneven drying, but you could alternate the placement of the fan. Cheers Steve in England.

+stevebrighton42 thanks! Wood dries naturally on the end grain. It also dries way too fast also on the end grain which is what causes checks/cracks in the ends of boards. That is also why I use anchorseal on the end to seal them up forcing the wood to dry totally on the face/long grain. If the fan blew on the end it would cause the lumber to loose moisture so fast that it would create all kinds of problems. An old time sawyer once told me wood looses water fast on the end, to hurry that up is asking for trouble. Great question. I appreciate your interest. Just hooked the fan up for the day. Hopefully by next week I will do an update and we can see some results.

Out of the Woods Thanks, that makes perfect sense now, the end grain will take care of itself, the fan is to accelerate the drying of the face/side grain, hopefully leading to a more evenly balanced air dry overall. Cheers.
