In my experience with these anchors, it really helps to make a small pilot hole with a small Phillips Screwdriver. Even though they say self-drilling, the plastic tip is not that strong.

The best way to use these anchors is to drill an actual pilot hole- I use a 1/4" pilot hole for the standard size. The next important thing is to only use quality anchors. The better ones have a built in stop, which will prevent it from spinning or drilling in too deep. But these really aren't the best anchors to use anyway, they're fine for light to medium weight items like many mirrors, but even simple wall plugs are stronger in many cases. This type of anchor is easy to remove, but the big auger / screw threads really just tear up and weaken the wall structure.

Yeh, I've used and replaced my fair share of these Anchors, both the plastic and metal versions. I used to buy these by the box of 100. . 1/ just, DON'T instal these with a drill. ....... put them in by hand with a screw driver. 2/ Use a manual screw driver to install or remove the screw. . Modern battery tools have too much power and not enough control. These have been round a very long time, my firm belief is that they where NEVER designed to be used with power tools. . Because of the work I do, I have reused these time and time again, when they have been installed properly, but where they have been over torqued on first instal, the screw fails to come out of the fastener and the fastener butchers the wall. . 3/Don't install them anywhere near the edge of the board or near a join, or damaged plaster board. To get the best out of these they require sound, properly supported unbroken paper on the back of the board. . While they both have similar claimed performance, I believe the metal ones work marginally better. . I still carry these, but they are no longer a first preference. . . OH yeh AND don't push too hard when you screw these in, you want that tip to cut as clean a hole in that back sheet of paper as possible.

If you use quality anchors, you can totally use a drill driver, you just need to understand how to use the torque settings. Pre-drilling also helps a lot, I never use them without drilling a pilot hole.

My metal anchors are flush. When I screw the screws into the anchors, the anchors UNscrew from the wall. It's driving me nuts.

Thank you for sharing and reaching out. I have some questions… 1) Are these metal self drilling drywall anchors or another type? 2) Are you using the screws that came with the anchors? 3) Did you install the anchor with a drill or with a screwdriver? You said that the wall anchors unscrew from the wall when you screw the screws in. Are the wall anchors actually unscrewing or just spinning further to the right?

Don't use these crap design of anchors. Use genuine Rawl branded plugs and never have this issue. Simples.
