How to transition from drywall to tile backerboard. Most of the time when remodeling a bathroom, you will need to plum the walls or make them flat. This will typically cause the new tile backerboard to stick out further than the existing walls. Here is what to do!

I wish I would of learned all the carpentry and drywall stuff when I was coming up in the tile trade. I was young and in new construction for many years so it was about production with the companies I learned from. Now I’m just a tile setter, which isn’t a bad thing but it becomes a hassle when I need to hire other trades. You and your husband are killin it and do superb work. Better than I am 👍🏼💯

I have done several things to deal with the difference, but I've never had a full half inch (or in your case more than that on the one wall). I have used pencil tiles, trim profiles and thinset to hide and/or make up the difference. Marble pencil tiles come in a lot of different sizes and used creatively can hide a lot of issues. My last tub surround I did one of the adjacent walls wasn't plumb and I extended my tile out over the joint and used thinset to compensate for the difference along with the trim profile.

I do more or less the same which ever material you use you just need to make sure its flush, and square at the end to allow for tiles, although i have tiled onto some bad walls and had to use more adhesive what a faff that was, keep up the vids tileochick

why not just add shims behind the drywall to make it flush? Seems simpler and less expensive.

Quick question, I see that the drywall guy you had mentioned you used for this ran the quickset/setting compound into your wet area. How do you now go about water proofing that? I recently decided to remodel my own bathroom, except in all these tile tutorial videos on KZbin most of you all use the foam backer board. Where I'm at (NY) I can't find it locally without special ordering it, and the closest thing I could find was the James Hardie hydro defense cbu, which is a 100% water proof backer board. The only issue is that it's .42" and not exactly a half inch. I used shims where I could to get it to be as flush as possible, but obviously as I'm screwing it down, thin setting the gap between the drywall and cbu, and imbedding the mesh tape, I have some low spots. Should I just compensate with the thinset as I drop the tile on the walls? The low spots are probably no more than 1/8" to 3/16", or would you recommend a different way?

Could you have used 5/8" thick drywall or combination of two 3/8" thick or 1/2" + 1/4" = 3/4" thick to get closer to what you wanted on the right side? Luv your videos here and on TikTok. Thank you for sharing.

But who uses 3/8? Can't remember the last time I've seen. She could have floated or hung over. I'd have skimmed the drywall on the right to get flush.

Nice work! If the customer is okay with it ill leave a 2" gap between the cement board and sheetrock then install a 2" x 2" molding in the gap from floor to ceiling and adjust the molding so its evenly exposed on both sides.

Was there 13" off the wall to center of toilet flange, so you could bump it in and still have enough room to set the toilet? Or did you have to move the toilet flange into the room further? Or did you buy a special 10" toilet and let it sit far away from the wall?

12 in is rough in measurement, 1/2 in won't hurt

@@daleon96 yes, yes it actually does. I've repaired one where the tank shape was cut into the wall because there wasn't enough room. There's a reason they provide you with rough in numbers. It's because that's the distance you need.

Hey is durock a MUST for bathroom walls? My contractor messed up and didn’t use (only partially used greenboard) and not sure if I should redo entire walls .. thanks!

For a direct wet area like in your shower waterproofing is a must green board is unacceptable. In the bathroom itself not hit by water green board will be fine

I would have put on sister studs and maybe a few shims to get the studs out where they belong. You would have a strait flat wall then.

She did that and that’s what gave her the height difference between the sister studs and the original sheetrock. Remember, the new tub was smaller than the original space. She HAD to sister the studs to snug up to the tub…
