Thanks for kind words. I’m no expert but if you can take something from what I film, it makes it worthwhile for me. Cheers

Got two front sprockets, one 14 and one 15 and 47 at the back I switch from one to the other depending on the road trip, but use the same chain !

Hi Dave I have my first drz400 stock gearing im always looking for another gear and reving its guts out at 100 so I took your advice after watching this video and went with a 41 tooth rear sprocket and I went for a ride and I was doing about 80 ks along a dirt road and didn’t realise I was in fourth gear so it felt like I had another gear it great now I’m very happy with it thanks for the info Ride safe and have a nice day 🤙

That’s awesome Toby. It’s always a compromise depending on what type of riding you’re doing. 14/41 will do most conditions comfortably.

Changing the front will affect the chain length less, but you might want a BnB sprocket cover

I run 16/38 which allows me to cruise at 75 mph on the highway and it works OK for me off road.

Was you able to fit a 16T straight on or did you have to modify something?
@mangrumpyold18719 ай бұрын
I just picked up a used DRZ 400s stock is 15-44 and it works well. It will cruise happily at 65mph (105kph) and runs completely out of steam at 82mph (132kph) but I am a little heavy at 105kg with my gear and I live a little over 1500m.

My 2023 USA 400S model came with 15/44 stock from factory. It seems like a decent compromise, and the same ratio as your 14/41.

I am running 15-44 on my DRZ and love it 😁 i also have a 14 tooth and 16tooth front sprocket in the shed 😉 if i was doing loooong rides with the boys on gig ADV bikes i will run the 16 and if i was to go out with the guys doing the harder tracks i might put on the 14🤔 but for every day riding i like the 15tooth 🤣👍 oh and i am lucky my one chain will do the lot 😁👌 might go up to the boridale shack tomorrow 🤔didnt get there last time 🫤 keep well Dave 😉🍺

That’s a simple way to do it Jeff, but I did not want to cut and shut my case saver or swing arm guard to make the 16T fit. I doubt I’ll change it often anyway.

The real trouble with the DRZ, that you can't easily fix, is the close ratio gearbox. Get a WR 450f and get it street legal, it has the wide ratio trans, fuel injection, and weighs substantially less.

What country did you do this in, in the US I've only heard of a couple of States that you could get it done w/o a lit of trouble but IDKnow jack-cH!T about the process? So does the 450f have a 6speed gearbox or is 5th gear really tall? I'm looking to start riding & have been looking at a lot of different bikes but still can't decide? I'm waiting on some money right now so I'm doing the research to know what I want. I'm guessing the suspension on the 450f is considerable better since it's a moto-cross bike? I heard that in Australia you can easily convert this bike to ride on road but in the US like Utah & one other State did I hear you could get the thing on the road where many States are hard? Anyhoo, thanks for getting me thinking along these lines b/c I worried about the DRZ being able to handle the highways for much time & I don't like the idea of the bike running at almost full rpm's for long periods.... vibrate me/bike to death? peace man

@@diggy-d8w If you haven't ridden before get a KLX 300 or the CRF 250/300l. Neither of these bike is a great choice for serious off road work, but they are great for learning on.
@frankdesbaux4 ай бұрын
It weighs a little less, has no road going equipment and a smaller tank. Road gear and a larger tank. Weights the same.
@nvmcrider84754 ай бұрын
@@diggy-d8w I live in Nevada in the USA. It’s a bit inconvenient to go through the legalization process but it is doable. If this is your first bike a 450 might be a bit much, a drz might fit your needs and abilities better for starting out. The WR is far better in the dirt, but for long distance asphalt the drz is better. Everything is a compromise.
@diggy-d8w4 ай бұрын
""Everything is a compromise"" absolutely correct ! Perhaps we have too many choices & Bike Channel's use all those to continually buy/restore or mod them out. BUT I digg it so I'm here. I've been researching 10-11 Dual Sports & have all the post purchase mods that each bike will need plus the cost of all those things. The WR250 & 450F are not on my lists but you can see my gearing question. I'm looking for highway speeds that won't vibrate me to death. I figure my riding will be 80% on the Roads leaving 20%. That can change more to dirt. But I've got the DR650/DRz400, Honda650, Honda 150L, 300L Rally version, and some others as well. I have dabbled several times asking about taking a flatout MotorCross bike like the 450f to convert which was part of my discussion. I'm certain you've been there/done that. The DRz400 is a good choice for anyone & I've done this deep dive on all these bikes so I'll know what they already did on mods & so I'll know what's left to get done. This will give me a better idea of a fair used price. I also know most of what to look at on each bike but if I can't buy new, knowing about all the mods & such will put me ahead and hopefully keep me from F#@King Up too bad..... I'm still saving so you never know, I might get a chance to snag a 450f & someone in a bind..... just know if it's a good deal I'll buy it & either flip it or get her legal. Thanks for the info.... it'll be my 1st bike since the early 90's peace

My DRz is an "s" which has stock gearing of 15/44. Mine is a used 2020 I picked up last month from a dealer, the bike had some mods done to it by the previous owner, one of which was a final drive change to 14/48... This was very low and at speeds over 55mph(88kph) I could feel the bike getting out of its happy zone, plus it made the throttle and engine braking abrupt ... I bumped the front sprocket up to a15t (15/48), its was a nice improvement but after a couple rides both on and off road I felt it still needs to be higher. So, I ordered a 46t rear sprocket, this will put the final drive at 15/46, just a smidge lower than stock which should work out well for the terrain I'll be riding.

Drop down to a 15/39 next time you replace the front sprocket. I ran the 16 but the 15 proved better on road. DRZ SM tops out at 155kph cruises at 115

@Tassiedave7 ай бұрын
I do support MX Superstore online. A little bit extra weight does not bother me so I buy the steel sprockets which last a bit longer (in my opinion) and are cheaper.
