I was in the audience for this lovely evening at the Palladium. Dame Shirley Bassey caused a sensation. She is 81! She quite literally stopped the show. In reality, with the wonderful atmosphere of the Palladium and the superb sound system, Dame Shirley's rich and powerful voice sounded miles better than even on this video version. Not only did the entire audience applaud three times during her performance, all 2,250 people rose at the end in a genuinely spontaneous standing ovation that went on way longer than the edit here. Whatever 'it' is, she's still got more of it than everybody else added together. It's not just her age-defying voice, it's her star quality, stage presence and 100% commitment to the performance. She is unparalleled. Amazing.

Astonishing! Amazing! Incredible (especially for an 81-year-old lady who sings like she was 45 or 50!) The only other talented and legendary singer that kept singing this great throughout her '80s was Barbara Cook! Shirley has always been one of Judy Garland's greatest fans and who has worshiped Garland for 60 or more years! Understandably, this was Garland's original medley and arrangement. However, Shirley does it in her own style and way, without copying any of the Judy imitations and mannerisms as most other singers do. I believe that this was her personal and private tribute honoring her beloved singer. Shirley is still among the very best of all the greats including Eydie gorme, Vicky Carr, Streisand, Bernadette Peters and very few others who are in this class! Sadly, only a few left. Replacing these truly talented singers today are Brittany Spears, Madonna etc performing by dancing and gyrating in thongs and/or less.🤔😟
