Yes, the original config was RCBOs in DB_Cellar, but as part of a wider upgrade we moved the RCBO upfront to DB1 nearly a year ago. Two re-homed MCBs from DB1 then went into DB_Cellar for lights and sockets. Whether RCBO or MCB, the sockets would always trip off in the cellar DB given time, although we could never catch it in the act. That's one reason why the RCBO protection got moved - to see if the fault would fall back to DB1 or remain on-circuit.

Happy new year & pass on my congratulations to Linda. My conclusion on that fault assuming both RCBO and MCB are ok is either part of the circuit is wired in twin and earth and something has penetrated across the cable catching the live and neutral and the dampness is tracking between or when it rains water is tracking in maybe if a D.P. switched socket tracking between switch contacts. Your face was priceless for a split second down there.

It's something like that, and intermittent enough to be too troublesome when in an area that new wiring can be pulled into without worrying about final finishes.

Happy New Year to both you and Linda, and congrats to Linda on the marriage. For the fault, a few thoughts - it looks like the majority of the sockets are not even needed now given what the basement is being used for, so you could try disconnecting a lot of them and seeing if that helps. The other thing, not very important really, you seemed to only consider a magnetic trip of the MCB thinking of 48 A going through it. But even 20 A through it for a prolonged period could trip it, you just don't know unless maybe you put a current clamp on the circuit with max hold to see if you could catch something, but even then the clamps average over a period of time so they won't always show a spike in current that causes the magnetic trip. Like you said though, probably best to just start over, or maybe just disconnect the majority of the sockets and see if that fixes it, if the client can accept that solution.

I agree that monitoring it in some way is the best way to show an overvoltage, but without evidence of where it is, and with a not-too-logical layout of conduit and wiring, it seems best to start again for the most part than throw any more time at it. I don't think any of the existing outlets are in use for any purpose at present so it's not a high priority to re-do or to get to the bottom of.

Just a thought … perhaps dodgy 16A type B breaker? Had this recently on new 20A BG RCBO radials on new circuit. Plugged in 2kw vacuum cleaner - in rush current = trip. Tried 2kW heater = no trip. Plugged in chop saw = trip. IR off scale so can’t be that. Assumed earth leakage on vacuum cleaner but nothing when measured. Swapped to C type breakers no issues since.

The MCB has been changed. I should have made that clear in the vid. It was originally an RCBO which got relocated upstream months ago, but the fault remains at the cellar.

No Sean, we bugged out and moved on. No point throwing more time at it. It's not even a logical conduit run as the sockets and lights are all lumped in together, so it's not easy to break down and trace what's going where. Better to start anew for much of it.

Remember, that reading is L-N, not to earth, so it's not actually a problem in of itself. It has to drop down to a single digit to trouble the MCB.

@@dsesuk I have come across a fault of a similar resistance that was responsible for causing intermittent tripping of the MCB, where no RCD was present. As you note, the maths suggests it shouldn't, but it did, and replacing the faulty section of cable fixed it permanently. It's worth investigating IMO.

You had 70k across L and N at 250v so what did you have at 500v? If something was breaking down, a 500v test would have shown it. Then it's just a case of splitting the radial until you find it.
@dsesuk19 күн бұрын
500VDC from a battery powered instrument would indicate little difference and wouldn't lead us to anything obvious. We could break the circuit down, but the point here was that the circuit was shonky and not logically laid out with conduit serving both lighting & sockets while splitting out at improper junctions. It wasn't one you could just follow and map, it had suffered from damp and iffy modifications over the years, and there wasn't even a trip event to see while we were present. That's why we only threw a short time at it before figuring it was best to have the client tell us what they wanted where and to run in new known wiring to suit. We'd perhaps put in more effort where new wiring would disturb final finishes, but down here where it's all surface mounted and pretty cack, it isn't worth spending much time and money trying to figure out what's good.
@Chris-hy6jy19 күн бұрын
@dsesuk not sure why you think a 500vdc test wouldn't have shown anything. If it was intermittently tripping a 16A breaker at 360v peak, 500v should have caused it to flash over and show a very low IR reading. The fault could have been L-E too of course. Doesn't matter if you're just going to replace it all anyway.
@dsesuk19 күн бұрын
@@Chris-hy6jy It can't be a L-E fault as there's an RCBO upfront that isn't tripping, but even if we got a cack result at 500V, it wouldn't give us an indication of where that fault was without breaking things down, and it wasn't worth the time and effort considering the age, improper mods and evidence of prior moisture ingress.
@Chris-hy6jy18 күн бұрын
