Met Bobby Richardson at youth rally my group was ice skating and there was a man who said he loved my Yankee cap but my skating needed help. The skating finished and we went to bleachers to wait on guest speaker to hold service well that man who had commented on my skating came and sat beside me we talked about baseball and about our relationship with God then it was time for speaker they introduced Bobby Richardson to come forward and share God with us well stranger who was beside me got up and went forward I nearly fell out of seat, after service I got his autograph we talked some more and left Bobby had more than baseball in his life he had the ultimate gift Eternal life from our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Bobby Richardson was at my Little league Park as a kid and my dad was too starstruck to ask for his autograph so he begged me to do it. such a nice man… He was there trying to watch the game and there ended up being a line of people waiting for him to sign autographs, and he took the time to sign everything

This may be the best funeral oration ever. As I get closer I think God will speak to me in a gentle Carolina accent. I just love the syntax. Virginia would be fine, too.

I was born in the Bronx on 153rd Street. There were times when the Yankees were doing great during a game, we could hear the crowd from our front stoop. My dad and my Uncle John, along with my 2 cousins Frank and Pat, would always attend old Timers day in Yankee stadium. we always got seats in the bleachers always by center field. One year i ran to the edge of the bleechers as Mickey came running after a ball. I yelled “Hey Mick, you’re the greatest!” He turned and smile and said “Hey Kid, thanks.” The following year, the same situation happened and i ran to the edge of the bleachers, i yelled “Hey Mick i talked to you last year do your remember me?” He turned and said”sure kid I remember you.” I ran back and told my dad that Mickey had remembered me. My dad with a smile said “Hey George That’s great!” I was on cloud 9, Mickey Mantle remembered me. My dad is now gone 10 years and i often think of that day and many other days with my dad that i cherish. While i was lucky to have had a chance to speak to Mickey Mantle, i was really lucky and blessed to have my dad as my dad.

My family is from Mississippi but we were always Yankees fans. My grandfather grew up with Ruth and Gehrig. My dad with Mantle and Ford. I grew up with Munson, Nettles and Guidry. Three generations of fans but none of us ever made the trip. My grandfather worked 2 jobs to support 5 children. My dad, it just never occurred to him to go. In 2005 when my dad retired, I took us to a game at Yankee Stadium as a retirement gift. The ticket taker tore our tickets and said "Welcome to Yankee Stadium." A grown man of 60 and another 35 years of age, grinned like little kids and broke out in goosebumps. When we toured Monument Park, my dad took out a picture of my grandfather and laid it on Ruth's monument, and said, "Poppy, you finally made it to Yankee Stadium." The Red Sox beat the Yanks pretty bad that day, but we still had a great time. A PERFECT day at Yankee Stadium. My father passed way last December. I am so thankful we made that trip and I have that memory.

Mickey was my first baseball hero and is still my biggest. I'm so glad he got saved. I'm also glad that on the day I was inducted into the military in 1972, we were all given pocket New Testaments as we were leaving for the airport. Thank you Gideons for giving them to us, and for putting the plan of salvation in the cover. And thank You God for saving me a lost sinner. Lastly, thank you David for posting this video.

@@dsimpson41 Just to clear it up, when I said we were given the New Testaments on the way to the airport, it was everyone leaving for basic training. I didn't get sent to Vietnam. Back then everyone leaving for the military regardless of branch was given a package with a shaving kit, writing materials and envelopes to write home and a New Testament. Sadly, I believe they're no longer allowed to give them out, due to complaints from atheist groups. Thanks again for posting this great video.

Amazing grace How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost But now I'm found Was blind, but now I see 'Twas grace that taught My heart to fear And grace my Fears relieved How precious did That grace appear The hour I first believed Through many dangers Toils and snares We have already come 'Twas grace hath brought Us safe thus far And grace will lead us home When we've been there Ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We'll have no less days to sing God's praise Than when we first begun Amazing grace How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost But now I'm found Was blind, but now I see ---- John Newton

I'm now 68 years old and Mickey was my boyhood "idol". When I played youth ball, I always picked #7 as my uniform number. I copied his stance (at least batting right handed). I collected base ball cards and even today I have nearly two dozen Mantle's and have given away some to kids that are now adults and they still thank me for giving them a card of their hero. When I read about Mickey making that eternal decision to accept Jesus Christ as his personal saviour, I cried. I never got to see him play, but I will see him in heaven one day. Thank the Lord there is hope.

Me, too Every time I replay this video. I'm 79 now. I was living in Waynesboro', Virginia in the early '60s, and the broacast of the World Series was played. My Mom was so excited that HER Yankees were being brought South of the Mason Dixon Line. I don't recall Mel Allen's game call, but I'm sure it's recorded somewhere! In Heaven? It won't matter. MICKEY and Bobby will remember every pitch, every play. Athletes do that. They remember the games that they ever played in.

I met The Mick in 1972 in Middletown, N.Y. and years later (1995) waited on Roy Clark in San Antonio, Texas. It was a Moe Bandy dinner event. Both men were gracious and polite. True gentleman and a class act. Maybe someday we can all sit together in Heaven and laugh, share sports stories and Praise The Lord in song.

Although I lived in Florida at the time, I just happened to be in Dallas visiting my family on summer vacation the same time as Mickey's funeral. All 5 Dallas VHF-TV stations (KDFW, KXAS, WFAA, KTVT & KERA) carried the funeral live. The only other time in Dallas broadcasting history that all five stations carried a single live event was the funeral of JFK.

I once saw Mantle hit a lefty home run in Detroit. What a thrill for an 11 yr old.. Always my baseball idol!! Casey Stengle said that if Micky would've taken care of him self he would've easily hit over 70 homers in a year. Micky drank alot and had a wild? life etc because he believed he would die young, as had his father and g-father. I love him.....
