In this portrait photography video we are looking at a lighting tutorial and behind the scenes natural light photoshoot with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 art lens. We are focusing on the lighting techniques, how to manipulate natural light and some tips for beginners to get better lighting in your portraits.
We look at some RAW files that were shot with the 35mm lens at F1.4, and you can follow along with the editing at the end of the video.

I assume you have measuered the exposure to the face (in shadow), right? Without any compensation, this seems very risky, since you have to take down the highlights in post (as you did). Wouldn't is better so measure the backlit face in shadow, correct to -1.5EV and bring up the highlights, if necessary)? Note that overexposed and therefore saturated pixels cannot be recovered by principle. A second item: Low contrast backlit images due to intense direct sunlight are due to properties for the optics, not for the camera (see 4:30)!
